Long term side effects?
I am three and a half years post treatment and have been mostly fine. I recently got a new primary care MD and she did a whole slew of tests. It turns out my liver enzymes are very high. My kidney shows that there is damage. I have type II diabetes. My blood pressure is elevated.
I am scared to death about the implcations of all these health problems. Does anyone know if any of these might be related to the effects of chemo? I had dose dense AC/T.
In some ways, I am more frightened about all this than I remember being when I was first diagnosed...
I would really appreciate any feedback, resources or information any of you has.
Thank you, my sisters....

Its hard to say what is causing your current issues but there are definitely long term effects from chemo. Some people seem more prone to them than others. Throw instant menopause into the mix and you have multiple issues that can cause diabetes, weight gain, high blood pressure.
The liver enzyme levels can be caused by diet or medications. I used to drink pink grapefruit juice by the bucketfuls and it caused my liver stats to be quite high. Once I stopped they came back into the normal range. It can also indicate a possible recurrence. When is the last time you had scans (bone/ct)? Maybe its time to test again just to be sure.
The kidney damage could be caused by the diabetes that went untreated. Its hard to say if these issues are the result of chemo or other things. It sounds like you have a great doc who can get to the heart of the matter. Most of these issues can be treated and you can have a good quality of life for a long time to come.

Thanks LnL...I have no idea what's really going on. I know about avoiding grapefruit which is sad since I love it so much. I haven't gained weight. No signs of recurrence anywhere....time will tell, I guess. Not really sure how to cope with all of this...but, thank you for responding. Mayber there are others out there who have had similar experiences...

Hey, Holly! It's been a long time since the Chemosabe March Cruise was underway.
Sorry to hear you're dealing with all these health issues. It doesn't seem fair that when we've had the big C, other diseases/conditions are still out there, waiting to catch us. I hope your doc gets the diabetes and BP under control. I wander through medical research articles now and then, and haven't seen anything about these being side effects. But of course that doesn't mean there aren't any connections.
So far I've experienced just some of the "usual" side effects -- a little neuropathy, some lymphedema, occasional rib pain on the left side, and occasional hit-the-wall fatigue when I've been doing a lot of physical things.
I'll be thinking about you.

hello dear maxgirl...glad to hear that htings are mostly going well for you...it turns out that i probably was pre-disposed to diabetes..had two large babies - 10 lbs and 11lbs!! i may have been pre-diabeteic for a long time. the dexamthasone seems to be the culprit. there's a whole discussion group in bc.org with women similarly affected...
i think of all of us every day and am so glad each day to be marching further and further from the chemo cruise...but will always be glad to have connected with everyone during that difficult and scary time...

Holly,
I have a friend who became diabetic and has liver problems from chemo. I was told that I have a fatty liver, so I need to watch my diet. It may have been in hiding since we don't know about all of these problems without tests or they become severe. Good luck to you!

Thank you tninalabama...I appreciate your support. Is your friend also on BC.org? I would love to connect with her...
Best,
H

I'll ask her.
Happy New Year,

Hi Holly! So glad to hear you are 3 1/2 years post but sorry to hear you are having other troubles. Just thought I would suggest to you the Budwig Protocol. Lots of info on the internet about it - one site is budwig-videos.com has tons of testimonials about people who have cured themselves of all types of cancer - even though you have finished treatment maybe this diet and protocol could help you with your troubles with your liver. I'm not a doctor but I have read alot of this treatment. Good luck to you!

Thanks Cinders - I will check it out! I appreciate your thoughtful support...this has always been a place where women care for each other and it continues to be for me...

thank you!!

HollyHopes, I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I have a dear friend who went through chemo a year before me. She has had so many issues from her chemo one being she is a diabetic now. She has high blood pressure now as well. Last month she had emergancy surgery to remove her gallbladder. Her Onc. does feel these are a result of the chemo.
-
hi Kira - wow, i am so sorry to hear about your friend. i know it seems weird, but i am glad that i am not the only one. i am trying to figure out how to deal with all of this and while i would have chosen to do the chemo anyway (even if i knew this was a possiblity) i wish someone had told me...i hope your dear friend does well...is she on BC.org??
-
I wish she was, but she isn't. She is triple negative with the BRACA gene. Her daughter 30 just had surgery to remove her breasts, and a hystorectomy. It has been a very long year for her and her family.
She has also done all she can to prevent the cancer from coming back. She has been such a support for me this year. I really believe people are brought into our lives when they are needed as she was for me.

Dear sweet sisters,
I found this posted on the stage IV board so I copied and posted here so that you would be aware of this loss. May she rest in peace.
Dear friends,
It is with a very heavy heart that I let you know that Lisa died peacefully this afternoon, surrounded by friends. She was one of the most amazing persons I have ever met. She had barely finished mourning the loss of one of her sisters from breast cancer before she too was dx with bc. She fought it aggressively, but unfortunately it recurred in her brain. She was brave, courageous, incredibly smart, kind, funny, a staunchly independent person who advocated for herself all the way. And time after time, when her docs thought to write her off, she bounded back and amazed everyone.
Services for Lisa are pending. Her sister, Ellen, thought they might be on Tuesday next. More information will follow when decisions are finalized. Besides her dear friends and devoted sister Ellen, Lisa also leaves a beloved daughter, Taylor.

I haven't checked in for a long while...I am devastated to learn of Lisa's death...
