Middle Aged Memories

I remember this product, and can imagine what it smelled like, too.

did anyone mention ditto machines and that yummy purple ink?  or if you were a cool hiipie chick, we took the big bell bottom pants that the "soc" girls wore, cut the side seams open ,tye dyed (those werent polyester!) and sewed them back up as skirts    when i was in jr high we wene not yet allowed to wear pants, and the skirts had to be no more than 2"  ABOVE OUR KNEES/  how did they tell?  if the teachers was suspicious, or just plain mean, we had to go to the girls vice principla stand with one leg bend and placed on a chair.  if it was not acceptable, then they called our moms   CUZ MOMS DIDNT WORK

They called my mom at work ONCE over the length of a pair of culottes (remember that word?)  Mom told them that if they ever felt that they had to interupt her day at work again, it better be because I was hurt or there was a REAL problem.

Seeing as how most capris are longer than a skirt, I don't get that dress code at all.  And a hood, geez! 

yup...we all thought we could get high from that purple ink!   what about rotary phones, party lines and phone numbers that started with a word not numbers  ex trianlge (tr) state (st)   knodike (that imfamous 555)""latchkey  key kids

There's a great scene in the movie "Fast times at Ridgemont High" where the students are handed exam papers and every one of them smells the paper!  We watched the movie with our kids a couple of years ago, and DH and I laughed at that scene, but the kids had no idea why.

Our phone number started with GE8, if we had to tell someone our number, we told them that it was general8.  My aunt, until she moved into a care facility two years ago, still had her black rotary phone attached to the wall!   I remember that whenever we wanted to make a call to family in Europe, we had to contact the long distance operator two days ahead of time so that she could clear a transatlantic line then we were given a time that we could make the call, and we couldn't direct dial, we had to go through the operator.

overdeas?  those were phone numbers HERE  i lived in the san frnando vally in sounther ca.  i think we probly had 5 area codes....there are like 25 now!

aint that the trurh....passswords as well     when i was a kid there was not a phone in every home?   either i am that old or we were that poor?   so a grown-up would one the kids go tell someone to call,  or the orther way around....yes we no longer cgisled on stone tablets 

thats what i get for not looking in the "active topics" i totally missed this thread!! you ladies have brought me down memory lane to nite.. except, i think im stuck somewhere in the past.. i STILL drink tang, in my green tea.. and, istill wear skorts!! remember sonny and Chher? they toured New England one summer, AND I GOT TO CHAT THEM UP FOR TWO OR THREE VISITS. LOVED IT.sorry bout hitting the key. my hands are wicked tonite.

remember before panyhose?  getting dressed in after gym class and seeing who or whether fancy garter belts?    we were allowed to wear stocings in the 6th grade, until one girl ruined the idea:  she played the clarinet in our orchestra and well..........

Yes, I remember garter belts in middle school....and gang showers in pe!!!  I won't say how long ago that was....I guess I am getting older than I thought....

no school gang showers in NZ - in fact no showers after PE.  We just had to stink until we got home and had a bath - showers were not common in NZ when I was young.  We used something like this to get a shower in the home later on.

We had a weekly uniform inspection at school and we all had to kneel on the ground and the teachers checked our skirt length. A note went home if it was not correct.

We called them Suspender belts and stockings - ugh.  We were not very well off and I had a home made one made of a strip of cloth and safety pins! I was terrified it was going to come apart at school.  Once I was old enough I mowed lawns to get some money and managed to get enough money to buy a real one after about a year.

 Sigh, Mighty Mouse was my FAVORITE cartoon on Satruday and then I would watch Sky King with Penny (the guy flew a small plane and i think he saved people each week from some terrble trauma...

Rea, your Jandals reminded me that we used to call them "thongs".  As far as I knew, there wasn't any other wearable by that name until I was a young adult.  I had a friend who call the footwear Zories, which I assume was the brand name which became the generic name in her family.
