Sternum ternderness
I'm about 2 weeks post bilateral mastectomy. I'm wearing the post surgical camisole that I wore when I had drains in. Today I went on a short walk and noticed that as clothing moved from side to side with my gait my sternum really noticed the movement and is tender. Is there anything I can do to alleviate that irritation?

I didn't have actual tenderness or soreness, but I did have increased sensitivity and was hyperaware of fabric brushing against my skin. Eventually I toughened up or got used to the sensation--not sure which. Can you wear an elasticized undergarment that will protect you from the movement of your clothing? I think that's what I did.

I have the same problem and in fact the entire area formerly known as my bosom is extremely sensitive now (I'm 3 weeks out) and by the afternoon I'm going nuts. I tried loose silk undershirts that were thin and light. I tried different camis - different fabrics - different tightness. I think I've found a solution and will confirm after I've worn these a few days. Yesterday at Kohl's I found Jockey brand camis. There are two kinds - one is cotton, on a silky (Lycra?) fabric. Very thin, form fitting so it doesn't rub as you move. They are stretchy. And there are no irritating seams. My drain scabs are really itchy and right where seams would be.
I started a thread on the post-surgery thread about this and will post there as well. Someone else may have some suggestions.
I also found an old shirt in my closet. Stretchy man made fabric that was really form fitting. It works great as an underlayer. Again no seams.

The Jockey brand Luxe cami is more comfortable than the other one which was not cotton but bamboo. I wear it very fitted - no extra room for movement over the skin. Luxe is brand name for the material. It is a very silky fabric. No lace or irritating seams. I will be buying a bunch more. I got mine at Kohl's. They are currently on sale for $16.50.

I had the same problem after my bilat mx in 10/2010, I am a little over 3 months out from the surgery, I also bought the Jockey cami's at Kohl's, they are super soft and fit perfectly without irritation. They are a little pricey so watch for a sale and get them then. I am still wearing mine and have them in several different colors. I like the all cotton ones, they wash well too. No seams or metal to irritate delicate skin. Hope you are doing better, sending good wishes your way. An after thought I had too, was that as soon as my doctor o.k.ed me too I started putting vitamin E on the scar which helps with the tightness of the skin. I got really sore from the surgical bra because of the front closure, so I stopped wearing it almost immediately, I was lucky because my drains came out after only 6 days. I did have a little problem with fluid but eventually that went away too. Still have a lot of tenderness along the incision and chest in general. I know in time that will heal as well. Hope this helps.
