Boston area oncologists
Just diagnosed with DCIS. Biopsy showed grade 3 cribiform, ER+. There are 2 clusters of calcification that a lumpectomy can check out.
I am wading through the preliiminaries. Met with a surgical oncologist, Dr. Rhei at B/W. I heard that Dr. Troyen was excellent but she is booking appointments for consults one month out. Is waiting that long a problem?
My second opinion will be with another surgeon, but at Mass Genl. Any comments about Dr. Martini? He will send slides and films to a second set of pathologist and radiologists, which is why I really wanted to go with a second opinion.
Do I need to see a plastic surgeon before a lumpectomy? Do they do just mastectomies? Are there other opinions I need to find before I make my final decisions?
Having had a terrible experience with an orthopedic surgeon, I as now totally distrustful of doctors. If you have had "success" with any medical or surgical oncologists, and plastic surgeons who do breast reconstruction anywhere in the Boston area, I would be very grateful to hear of your experience.
Thank you for helping to keep my fears at bay,
BJB1

I had Dr. Troyan when she was at the BIDMC and I followed her to the Brigham. She is amazing and I'm surprised about the wait. Can you call and ask them to get you in earlier?
I don't know the other doctor you mentioned, but I love Sue Troyan. Amazing surgeon and I totally trusted her.
Good luck,
Pam

Hello BJB1 -
If you are still looking for an oncologist in the Boston area, I can heartily recommend John K. Erban, M.D. at Dana-Farber and Mass General.
Here's his info.
Dr. Erban was my primary oncologist when I was first diagnosed (Stage IV) at Tufts in the fall 2005. I was terrified, overwhelmed, in terrible pain, and ultimately hospitalized for treatment and radiation for 7 weeks. Dr. Erban was AMAZING. He was always patient, supportive, and encouraging. He answered my endless questions. He listened to all my concerns. In short: He gave me hope.
After 5 years of seeing lots and lots of health care providers, I still consider Dr. Erban to the very best. And he would still be my onc if I didn't live clear across the country in Seattle.
Good luck to you.
