Rib pain and high ALP

I always hesitate to post here because I don't want people to think that I am sitting around worrying all the time about recurrence or mets.  It does however cross my mind and if I get a strange/different pain then it crosses my mind even more.

First let me say that I just went to my Onc. recently but all he tests since my BC 3 years ago are tumor markers.  They have always been within limits.  Every visit but one I have had a high ALP level.  He wonders about it but never orders any further tests.  I have had a two bone scans since I have been NED and both were negative.  I have also had an MRI of my pelvic region due to a bout of bursitis in my hip.

I am knocking on 48's door and know that with age and lack of regular exercise that I will have age related pain.  So here goes my question.

I recently had a bad cold which ends as it always does with a rough cough and laryngitis.  I coughed for three weeks.  So three days ago my left rib (bc was on right side) just under my left breast started hurting.   It hurts when I breathe in deeply, hurts when I cough and when I sneeze (pain very severe during the cough/sneezes) and it hurts when I press on it.  In the last couple of days it has seemed to get worse.  It affects my sleep and how I sit, bend over, etc.  Now when I walk it hurts when the steps are taken on the left side.

So with the high ALP that MAY indicate bone mets and this pain.....could it be?  Of course, I know it could be OR it could NOT be but I wonder all the same.

I will wait the required 2-3 weeks and then if it remains I will see the doc again.  I just always wonder about only doing tumor markers when they are so unreliable.  And that nagging ALP test?  What's up with that always being high?  And this rib pain now.   Aaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!

I have seen where there are women here who get mets after years out from their bc but I know TN is better the farther out you go.  Blah, blah, blah.....Talk me down, ladies!  Embarassed

Hi there, look up torn rib cartilage on the web, and see if this your situation.... I have been there, done that, still have it...it takes forever to get better... and it took an x-ray, an ultra sound, a CT scan and MRI to eliminate "bone cancer" from the menu of "oh my goodness, what the heck do I have NOW"....   I think I did mine from coughing too much with a bad cold as well.  I didn't even know ribs had cartilage... so take a deep breath, cross your fingers and hope that everything is all right.

    Best wish... tj

I was thinking that maybe you bruised a rib with all the coughing.  I did that when I was pregnant with my youngest son. I had a cold with a terrible cough at that time they didn't you anything when pregnant.  I bruised my ribs so bad they hurt for months after he was born. So it could something along those lines. Sending good thoughts. NJ

It could it be the muscles in your chest, or the cartilege between your ribs that have become inflamed from coughing...or pleurisy, costochondritis, pneumonia, or half a dozen other things related to your recent cough.  Try not to borrow trouble, (I know it's hard) but do make an appointment with your MD.  If you have a fever, it could well be an infection, but viral illnesses don't always have fevers associated with them.

I think you guys could be right.  Torn ligament is most likely the answer.  The high ALP could be many things.  No need to worry until there is something to worry about.  Thanks for the help.  You ladies are the best!
