How old were you?

Yes I was 52 when diagnosed 3.5 years ago. When the surgeon finally got it out, after 2 surgeries, he said for the stage and type it was, it would have been there at least 7 years. I had been having mammongrams regularly for the previous 6 years before it was found. Yes it does scare me to think it had been there so long.
-
Age 49. Will be 50 in Feb 2011. Dr. said I had this for 4 years (fast grower). I'm the first in my family. 4 years ago I had a mammo/ultra sound because they thought they saw something but then said no. To bad they were wrong and didn't watch me close enough
Granted dense breast tissue does present challenges.
BTW when I called my(now former) gyno 5 weeks after my yearly appointment and the day before my mammo she said it was probably a papilloma. She never called/talked to me again till I called the office the day after my biopsy and let them know that the radiologist told me I have cancer, it's a huge mass and fast growing… and that diagnosis was just from the mammogram/ultra sound! Yes one of her staff left a message on my cell phone that I needed a biopsy. Great way to let someone know. No one ever explained anything to me.
How she missed a 5.5cm tumor in a A cup breast is nuts. Granted I had dense tissue but the US technician was freaked out when she felt it. Then not to call!

Turned 41 in May, found the lump 2 months later. Doc told me to go home and not worry...just a fibroadenoma.
WRONG!......2.5 cm IDC. Had mastectomy and ALND.
-
16 years old! I'm 17 now... can't wait for my hair to be back before prom!!!
-
HUGS Erin, you are WAY too young to be dealing with this! I love your beautiful smile and hope you show people that everyday.
(((((((((HUGS))))))))))))
-
Found mine 1 month shy of my 47th birthday. First in my family as well!
Erin23,
I have a son your age! You are WAY to young to have to go through this. Hopefully you are finding this web site to be as supportive as I have!
Sending you a BIG Mom Hug!!!!
-
Diagnosed at 51. Told the BC has been there at least 10 years...really? Had mammograms every year since 40 and this was the first time anything showed. Tumor was 2.5 cm. Makes me wonder how long something has to be there before it is caught.
Erin23 - sending you a big hug!!!!!!!!!
-
Erin23, 17?--and dealing with this mess? Many hugs your way!!
-
I was 53 when I found the lump, then turned 54 after the DMX. Had immediate reconstruction w/ tissue expanders and in Oct. had implants placed.
I just had to have an in office D&C and removal of two uterine polyps. I don't have insurance, so no anesthesia, wouldn't recommend it ladies! I had a neg result biopsy of a uterine cyst before the D & C; have a CT scan set-up for Sat. to explore a throat light-up from my last pet/ct scan.
Geesh, would like a break.
Sorry, whining a little.

I was 53 when the inflammatory rash reared it's ugly head. 2 months later I had my diagnosis of Inflammatory breast caner. So I am a 3 year survivor & 2 years NED!
-
dx. at 29 with TNBC-Mets liver/lung, now 32 and currently NED after two rounds of Abraxane, radiation and double mastecomy.
-
Hi! I was 46 when diagnosed in march,2005. lumpectomy with dorsi flip with Muscle from back, radiation ( 33 cycles with booster) follwed by chemo ( six months). No symtoms of recurrence till now. currently on arimidex ..follow up treatment every six months. feeling quite OK but worrying if recurrence.
-
A couple months after turning 30.
Erin23 - I'm shocked at how young you are. Way way way way too young to be dealing with breast cancer. ((hugs))
-
I was diagnosed at age 42. No family history (also BRCA-). I found the lump when I was scratching. My ob/gyn said it's probably a fibroadenoma. When the biopsy proved to be cancerous, he said DCIS was very early-stage and sent me to see a breast surgen. The surgen then told me the lump felt too hard to be DCIS, he wouldn't be surprised if it was IDC. And because it tooked like more than 2 cm on the US, I was automatically stage II. I left his office in total astonishment, almost backed into a car in the parking lot.
-
47 years old. Have been having regular mammograms since the age of 29.... BRCA in my family tree, though I test negative for it, all of my maternal first cousins are positive (and by the way got breast cancer at 29 years old -- now a 20+ year survivor, 28 years old, with a recurrence at 33 years old -- now a ten year survivor -- and 47 years old -- now a five year survivor). On Tuesday my aunt, who had breast cancer in her twenties is coming to visit me while I recover from my BMX, she is a 47 year old breast cancer survivor!
Had a diagnostic mammogram with ultrasound in Feb 2010. Ultrasound tech was ridiculously thorough, but saw nothing suspicious. There was a fatty lump close to the surface of my breast, I have dense and lump breasts. In September, I felt the same fatty lump... felt different to me, couldn't articulate precisely why, but fortunately decided to take myself in and have it checked out. So frustrated that this wasn't caught back in February, with all that screening, why wouldn't it have shown up?
-
I was 40 when I found mine in a self check. I was officially diagnosed on October 25, 2009
-
Erin HUGS to you. You are too young to have to deal with this and I hope you get your hair back before prom.
I was diag in Sept and am 48 years old. Been having yearly mammos for the last 13 years due to a b-9 lumpectomy of Atypcial Hyperplasia. Mammo did not catch it this time, showed suspicious that turn out OK but on the hunt had a MRI that found the tumor. No family history I am the only one.
-
I am 43, just diagnosed on Nov. 30th. Also the first in my family, no history.
Found it myself in the shower. Never showed on mammos every year since 2007, or when I found it. saw it on ultrasound but everyone said it looked like fibro. Thankful my ob-gyn insisted on surgical biopsy (she's a cautious doc!) which gave me the shocking dx.
Scheduled for lumpectomy (they only took 95% of it for biopsy) to get clear margins and snb on 12/21.
Erin - I am espcially sorry you've been going through this at such a young age. I know you'll look gorgeous for prom. You give me strength. As the mother of two little girls, I send you big, mom hugs - you're amazing!
-
Was diagnosed at 40, 17 years ago. Then it was considered "Young " I still get the invites from this organization, first cancer of any kind in my family.
All my mammograms negative, ultrasound same, no lumps, only pain. Demanded open biopsy came positive, during the mastectomy a second invasive was found.
-
31 years old. No family history, non-smoker, non-drinker. 100% Asian (not that it mattered to BC).
-
39 - found the lump myself. mammo place told me it was 'nothing'! Thank goodness I didn't listen to them!
-
1 week after turning 35 (this December).

I cant remember if I posted to this question or not so sorry if this is a repeat. I originally found the pea sized lump and showed it to my GP when I was 34 or 35. She said because I have cystic breast, was so young and I said it hurt, that it couldnt be cancer. Well 2 wks after my 36 BDay I went to my BP again and showed her the now 4-5cm lump and 2 swollen nodes. She said she still thought it was only a cyst but because of the swollen nodes she would send me for a mammo to make me feel better. Well 2 wks later I was diagnosed IDC and ILC and DCIS . I wonder if I wouldnt have been Advanced BC if she had treated me back when I first said something.
-
