I have many, many more age spots since chemo and I cover the ones that show with a concealer -- it works pretty well.  I've tried fade creams and they don't work for me.  Thyroid function is where it should be, but I've been on synthetic thyroid pills since 1971 -- had my thyroid removed after I had a baby and it went insanely jealous and tried to kill me.

My latest issue is scar tissue and LOTs of it under my arm and around my implant.  Having it fixed soon.  If I remember I'll ask the doc about age spots when I see him next week.

The age spots crop up suddenly, however they have been lurking for years waiting for the chance....when we have less estrogen, when we hit, 50, 55, 60, everyone is different.  But, except for the ones caused by a true thyroid condition, they all are caused by one thing.....sun, and other UV exposure.

My derm says my options are.....

burn them off using liquid nitrogen (like they do warts and other pre-cancer skin spots)

use lightening cream, an Rx one is Triluma......

a light facial peel may help fade them,....

Use sunscreen.....it is the only way (other than not being in sun or totally covering your face/hands) to keep them from getting worse.

I live in Michigan, and while we are north, we still get enough sun to create lots of skin damage.

I am trying a light facial peel this year for some fine wrinkles...I will report here what it does to the few age spots I have on my face.   I guess I am lucky.....I have them mostly on my hands,....who thinks to put sunscreen on the backs of their hands!....my face I was really good at covering up...hats/visors/sunscreen every single day.

Good luck and let us all know if you do find a cream that works for you

OOOOH, I can't wait to hear how the peel goes!!! I have NONE on my hands. I know mine are caused by sun damage....sigh. Never used sun screen until about 10 years ago so I have over 40 years of damage added up...sigh.

Hey, did you have your peel yet? I'm curious to know how it went. I'd like to do one, but an OTC one because of $$ but I don't want to end up burnt red or something. Anyone else have any luck?

The 1st Derm I saw...Did not treat Age Spots.  So I had a consult with  a 2nd one she recommended At the end of the year.

I tried the Cyrosurgery or Liquid Nitrogen on Jan 10th.  You get up to 11 spots done for the same price as 1. $100 Supposedly,  but my EOB says $189.   I had read that sometimes they use a Qtip to apply the LN.  Mine used the 'torch'

She said she does them very lightly & often they will need 2-3 treatments.  I was so worried I would have White spots left where the Pigment was totally removed.

So far things are looking good.  They looked terrible for 8 days.  I had very dark brown spots for a week.  The biggest one -penny size -was of course the worst.  Make up did not help cover them...So I kind of had my hair in my face for a week.  All lost the scab by 9 days except the big one.  That is almost gone now.  They are pink underneith (they are supposed to be)  Interestingly the lighter spots she did - still are a bit brown- not pink : (

So far I am happy.  Will let you know how they finish healign in a few weeks.

Wow, that is very hopeful news. Do you have to treat those areas differently once they heal? Will they burn easier or be dry? Did it hurt? Yell

It hurt.  But not for too long.  I wasnt told about after care.  I think they may burn easier in the beginning...But not later.

On my big spot...All looks good except one edge...Where it must not have gotten any Nitrogen.  Hope she can touch that up.  I go back in about a month.

That's very good to hear. I don't have too many wrinkles but I am getting dark spots. I know it's from the sun, but when I got old enough to care, or believe that it would happen to me, it was too late!

interesting, BARBE, and quite timely for me. since chemo, my old derm. said it would force all the cancer spots out in my skin. present derm said nope. he was right, unfortunately. the sunspots, age spots (shes columbion) they call them "wisdom spots, cause they come from old(er) age..hah!

anyway, just am healing from having about 15 of them frozen off with the nitrogen thingy.. they are no longer light brown, and looking like both ics. they're coming in dark brown, and about 1/4 of an inch thick.  ive had many many squemous cancers removed, some quite large.. so, she's doing "body" scans every 2 mos. for awhile. she says theyre dangerous to just leave. but, the ones that aren't big, she said i could just scratch them off.im gonna go get the cream she rxs. she said its' imp to have an exfolliantor with the cream.. ive never heard of that!

i have been doing a salt scrub, or sugar scrub for a long time. it helps keep the new skin coming in..

an interesting note; she warned me that the frezzing might cause my LE to flare, the skin is part of that system, and boy, was she right! to make matters worse, i can't wear the sleeve till they drop off and heal a it, for fear of infection.

so, ladies, DO take them serious, if its' not just the look thats' the problem. they told me anything that gets bumped out on the skin, darkens, or itches, can be cancer. and not just skin cancer. we have to watch for bc on our skin, esp near scars.. WHAT elase!!

guess i shouldnt ask, cause theres' always more, if ya look for it!

ok, the name of the lotion is:LAC lotion. its a moisturizer with an exfollient, is rx; and is made by the Paddock Lab., inc., out of Minn, MI. ill let you know if it works!!       3jays

3jays, the exfollient would help scrape off the old skin to reveal the new skin beneath. You don't have to scrub as hard as the cream is doing the work for you! Let us know how it all goes.

I have had tons of keratoses (sometimes called "age spots") some of which got much darker on my chest after radiation. These are not like smooth freckles, but more like spots that may have a slightly raised crusty surface. Very unsightly!  I got most of them off with wart remover . . .Compound W, or a less expensive brush-on 17% salycilic acid.   Sometimes it takes several daily applications, but they do eventually fall off -- some more easily than others. The best thing is, it doesn't leave any scars or red spots.  My skin is looking much better now.  BTW,  I've also been taking Vit. A because I read that it helps this condition. (however I haven't taken it long enough to know for sure)

A disclaimer: I'm not suggesting anyone else should do this, only that it is what I did.  One must be very careful not to apply it to moles or any lesion that may look like it might be cancerous.

Aza, I have dots on my body that are slightly raised too and sometimes when I scratch real hard without thinking they actually fall off! Would those be the keratoses? I wonder....now I'll have to ask Dr. Google.
