Calling all ladies in their 20's

nannababy: All I bought and really needed was a light coloured bra and a dark one (I got a white bra and a black bra). I got a breast prothesis that sticks to the skin in case I wanted to wear it with a bra that didn't have a pocket. The prosthesis I bought doesn't leave any stickiness on my skin when I take it off either and it was a 2 (or 3?) year warrenty for it to keep sticking. I also have the option of leaving the back on and slipping it inside my mastecomy bra. I bought a couple sports bras from Lululemon (http://shop.lululemon.com/Flow_Y_Bra_IV/pd/c/520/np/520/p/2345.html) and they are soooo comfortable! I highly recommend it because they have great support and I wear them for working out!
shiramg: I stayed in the hospital overnight because I was pretty sore but they give you some great medications. It was hard to move my arm for a couple days but I felt fully recovered in 2 weeks. However, I had to go back into surgery after 2 weeks and get my lymph nodes removed and that recovery was a little longer since I had to do physio. I think I had full range of motion again after 2 months? You will probably have a drain attached to you for 10-14 days and its hard to do much with them..

LibraryJenn-
Good luck with the potty training! My son is now 3 (halloween birhtday) he's been potty trained fully for about 3 months now- feel free to ask any questions
also have a 5 yr old daughter but she was SO MUCH EASIER to potty train! Boys can be stubborn! -
NannaBaby - I had a lot of eye tearing post chemo too! I cant remember how but I know its definitely a side effect of chemo - it blocks the tear ducts somehow... It didnt last too long for me, its just really annoying more than anything....
Girls, you may remember a while back I posted about horrible vaginal discharge and itch since starting tamoxifen. I finally bit the bullet and went to see my Gynae last week to check it out and for a cervical smear (which I had been putting off for ages!). She rang me yesterday to tell me I have a yeast infection 'down there' and need some anti-fungals....I guess you cant blame tamoxifen for everything!
Hope everyone is keeping well, its FREEZING cold in Ireland at the moment ....Brrr! Glad I have hair this year - this time last year I was completely bald and in the middle of chemo...

-
I'M DONE WITH CHEMO! happy hanukah!
-
Shiramg - Congrats! Its a wonderful feeling to finally finish! Enjoy celebrating!
-
i would be happy but just heard that my friend killed himself this morning. its so hard to deal with this when i am fighting for my life and he chose to take his...
talk about bad timimg
-
Shiramg--- Congratulations on finishing chemo!
I myself have 4 more TC to go ... .........can't wait to be finished with it!
-
shiramg - really sorry to hear about your friend...its difficult to understand peoples inner turmoil, I guess you never know whats going on in peoples' heads...
Katiaw - I had TC x 4 last year, its not the worst, hope you get through it ok!
-
Thank you for your encouragement TreadSoftly. I had two chemo sessions already and will have four more to go. I am soooooo ready to be finished with it and to "restart" my life once again afterwards.
Shiramg: My deepest condolences to you.
-
did anyone lose their eyebrows AFTER chemo? my hair started growing back and i was so excited but now its seems my brows are disappearing.
-
I lost part of my eyebrows, half to be exact, and half my eyelashes. I use brow powder and no one can really tell the difference, but at 33, this is still unnerving, does andyone know if this is the only thread for young women?
-
Shiramg - Yes, my eyebrows thinned ++ AFTER chemo. I didnt completely lose them, but almost a year later, they are still REALLY thin. I have to use an eyebrow pencil every day to give them some definition and colour. If I dont, it looks like I dont have any!! Luckily, I kept my eyelashes...!
Skkydiamond, I know there is a 'Ladies in their 30's' thread that seems quite active also
-
hehe - yes the eyebrows and eyelashes, about 6 weeks after my last cycle of TC the eyebrows fell out, then the following week my lashes fell out. Seem to be all back now though.
How's everyone going with the hair regrowth? Mine has come back so curly - and I've never had curly hair not even when I was a baby! So many people said that this could happen but I never really believed it could.... so funny. Plus hair EVERYWHERE just seems to grow so fast - feel like I'm shaving my legs waaaaay more than I used to have to do.
-
girls,
i feel extremely out of sorts. i'm done with chemo and i don't start hormonal treatments until jan. i thought that i would be so happy after chemo, like ready to get back to the real world, but instead i find myself crazy hormonal/emotional. i'm getting so upset and frustrated and pissed off and its freaking me out.
is this normal?
i'm not happy the way i thought i'd be.

-
shira, i'm going through the same thing...at first i was really happy about not dealing with chemo ever again, or radiation ever again...but then i felt sort've lost and alone. i'm super emotional and have some crazy mood swings...i feel really bad for my bf. it's like a rollercoaster daily.
-
mel, i feel like i'm about to end my year and a half relationship due to my mood swings. i have been wanting more time alone and its really sad bc we were suppossed to move in together in march. i secretly called my broker and just extended my lease...i feel like monster.
have you started tamoxfien yet? i'm so nervous about how i'll feel on both tamoxifen AND zoladex.
-
yeah I want to be alone a lot too, which he doesn't understand. my sex drive is nil as well. he takes it all personally but it's not him, it's ME. you're not a monster. we have to take care of ourselves and do what's right for us.
I did start the tamoxifen about 2 months ago. nothing major except some dryness down "there" and I'm not sure if it's attributing to my mood swings at all or not. it's hard to tell if I'm all emotional due to the meds or because i just finished active treatment and am having a hard time dealing with it.
however, i did get my period today ladies!!! first time since the beginning of june. never thought i'd be so excited

-
i'm very nervous about losing my sex drive. so far i have it in full (even during chemo). is it the tamoxifen that makes you lose it or the zoladex or what?
congrats on period. i got mine during my last chemo which was crazy.
-
shiramg - sorry to hear about your friend. Thats heart breaking. I know what you mean about the paradox of fighting for your life while someone else decides to end theirs. Its really hard to take.
Yay for everyone who is getting a period. Mine has been off and on. More off now that i'm ending chemo, but I did have it after my third cycle of TCH.
-
i don't know what makes you lose it...i was totally fine during chemo. but now i just don't even really care that much...it sucks. but i'm an emotional wreck these days, so it might not really be the tamoxifen. i'm going to talk with a counselor who specializes in it next week...

Hi Ladies,
I'm back from Cuba! It was a nice vacation, definately needed it! I had some emotional lows though... a couple nights, I cried like mad! I couldn't stop
But most days, I felt great, and my mind was totally wiped out of any cancer thoughts
There was one night at the buffet... I ran into a drunk guy we've routinely chatted with at the resort, saw me in my wig. He said (kind of in a joking tone) "oh! you DO have hair!". "I see you wearing a scarf all the time! I thought you were a cancer patient! The scarf would be a dead give away!". I was mortified! I didn't know what to say!? I told I am a cancer patient! And balled! In front of EVERYONE! at the buffet!!! The drunk appologized, started crying and took off. - I'll never forget that!
Otherwise feeling a little self consious... I figured I'll never see these people again, so I went swiming and tanning bald. It felt liberating! Although I did seclude myself from the large crowds.
Surgery is in 3 days, modified radical mastectomy and full auxillary dissection. I am looking forward to getting this cancer out!
I have a new problem...For a month, I have felt pain on my chest. Onc. thought tumor pain. And just today I found a lump approx. 1 to 2 inches below my cancerous breast on my rib. It is approx. o.5-1 inch bean shape and is movable. It feels fairly hard and tender to the touch. What could this be?! What should I do?! I can't phone my onc. until Monday. Can I have the breast surgeon remove the lump during my mastectomy on Tuesday to have it biopsied?! Can I ask the surgeon or onc. to bring in a general surgeon in on Tuesday to remove the lump if my breast surgeon can't do it? Help me ladies! I am freaking out!!
Thanks
X & O -
NannyBaby- i'm not sure what the proceedure would be for removing the new lump, but i'm assuming that they should be able to do something with it while you are in surgery - that would make the most sense!
-
My mastectomy went well. The surgeon couldn't feel the new lump... I will keep an eye on it. I was supposed to spend the night in the hospital, but couldn't! Too loud and hot! Poepl just can't shut up!! I was very nauseated from the aneastesia, I puke a lot! The gravol they gave me was useless! I asked for Stemetil and they said no. Oh well. I took some stemetil as soon as I got home and felt better
I feel good
knowing that the cancer is out of me! I still have the big bandage and tensor on, so I haven't seen my bare chest yet. I have a drain in too. Which is easy to take care of. I'm in good spirits and am happy my treatments are almost done
I can't wait for the pathology report...Take care ladies

-
keep the good spirits up nannababy... us ladies need to stick together!! are you getting reconstruction done?
-
Sometimes I move funny and it feels like the insision is tearing open??? Is that normal? Is it the gumk just sticking to the bandage? Will it hurt like hell when the nurse changes my bandages???
-
It's not bad when they change the bandages. It feels more weird just because you don't have much sensation left, so you just feel this weird pressure. The drains were the worst part for me, but I had 4. If I moved the wrong way, those are the things that stung me.
-
Sorry been off line while I moved

Glad to hear a few of us are wrapping up chemo- i had my last tx on monday, we cut it short one due to nuropathy issuses
Shiramg- Sorry to hear of the lost of your friend, there really is never a good "timing" for death really, if you weren't going through this it'd still hurt just as much. My freshman yr my favorite teacher killed her self, it was really hard on me becuase i felt i should have known... anyhow I am truly deeply sorry to hear that about him...
Cuba sounded nice, non-cancer patients need to keep their mouths shut. I was on he riverwalk last night and these 2 young guys (prop hs or early college) were playing guitar to raise some change. They were flirting with these 2 girls and one says to her "i'm doing this to raise money for my cancer" (by the way i am walking by bald!) SHe says "awww really" and he says "no just joking" I wanted to take his 50 cents and say i wish i were only joking!!!! thought it was very insensitive for him to joke like that!
Merry christmas everyone!

texasrose, isn't it odd hearing things that people say now? at my job when i told them i would be taking LOA while on chemo, one of the associate coordinators (scheduler and sort of hr, without the degree), says to me, "you don't need to take 26 weeks off, you are stronger than you give yourself credit for, all you need to do is go down to part time" i looked at her and said "have you ever had cancer?" she says "well,, no but your young, and strong, you can handle it" i said "shut the hell up!" went to my store manager and complained like the dickens. apparentlt she got into trouble for even muttering that out of her mouth.
if it were a desk job, maybe i could work 4 days out of the cycle (DD AC and 12 weeks of T) but i work retail, in a home depot, walking, lifting, pushing, pulling, PEOPLE, KIDS, TOUCHING EVERYTHING!
i swear that comment has been burned in my mind. especially i just had my second treatment yesterday and feel like utter crap today!
-
hdangelbaby - that woman doesnt have a clue!! She shouldnt have said anything to you whatsoever.... I work in healthcare and took 6 months off last year when I was going through chemo etc. There was no way whatsoever that I could have kept working through chemo - even part time too!!
-
Hi ladies. I'm new to the site and am kinda jumping in the middle of this thread..hope ya don't mind.

Long story still kinda long: I'm 24, (turning 25 on 1/6), single, no children and am officially boobless. Before my diagnosis I was living in another city, found a job I loved after graduating college and stayed there for about a year. After a few run ins with a less than appreciative boss, I broke my lease/quit my job, and moved back home. Luckily, with the new health care policies, my mother was able to put me on her insurance immediately since I'm under 26. (Amen!) I noticed a small lump in my right breast and thought it fate that I had my yearly scheduled already within the next few weeks. Conclusion: Mammogram---> Ultrasound---> Needle Biopsy = Cancer.
So, here we are, two unsuccessful lumpectomies later and I am now recovering from a bilateral mastectomy w/ TE (12/7). Oh yeah, plus the Port which was THE MOST painful recovery ever. I went back to the surgeon and all but begged them to take it back out. (moment of weakness) But overall, me and my tiny rib cage are hanging in there with the expansion process, I'm only two fills in but the expander is only 250 cc b/c the PS said my rib cage was surprisingly small so he had to go w/ a smaller TE than planned.
I'm starting chemo on the 10th so although I will be celebrating the big 25 slightly smaller, ok I'm lying...very much smaller than before, my silver lining is that at least I will still have my hair. I would be lying if I said I wasn't nervous about the chemo. I am not the type to sit home and I still have a pretty full social calendar
I've read a few posters mention that you kinda get into a routine a few days in after your chemo rounds and can somewhat predict what days will be worse than others. Hopefully this is true b/c so far I have been able to take it all in stride and not let this rule my life. All I can recall as far as my chemo regimen (it's all a blur now) is that one combo will be once a week every other week for four rounds, and the next combo is once weekly for 12 wks. No radiation and then implant surgery after chemo.Any words of advice is much appreciated. I know there are boards specifically for chemo and TE and all the other parts to this thing, but I'm hoping to find my own little place with my younger sisters in this.
hdangelbaby, I had a similar experience at my job. My co workers generally have been more than supportive and generous through this process but I almost lost it a few weeks ago. Once I came back from leave after my mastectomy, I was speaking with a prospect when he mentioned, "So, what kind of surgery did you have?" As you can imagine, my jaw dropped. This stranger, who had just walked into the office 10 minutes ago is asking about my medical history. Apparently, while I had stepped away, my boss was making small talk with him and I guess she mentioned that it was my first day back in the office and yadda yadda yadda...inappropriate! I matter of factly told him that was none of his business and tried to hold my composure the rest of the day. I guess this is just a test of my patience...
