Picketers at Elizabeth Edwards Funeral
Westboro Baptist Church, the same group that has been picketing at the funeral of soldiers killed in the line of duty, is planning on picketing at Elizabeth Edwards funeral. I find this beyond appalling! What can we do? Letters to the Editors, OpEds...? We need to have our voices heard on this. Ideas?

Is that for sure? Or a rumor? I would think that there are some pretty big organizations with some major clout that will eventually put a stop to these kinds of things. There should be a ruling that funerals are private affairs and therefore not subject to this "freedom of speech" stuff!

Not a rumor. All over the news. I believe they have been heard before the Supreme Court on this issue, specific to the military funerals, but am ashamed to say I don't remember the outcome. Nonetheless, they are planning on being at Ms. Edwards funeral on Saturday.

Somestimes I just want to run over idiots with my car.

All in love of God????

These are people that the world can truly do without. I see absolutely no redeeming value in any of Westboro's members. I feel guilty about saying this, but one day, (hopefully sooner, than later), this Fred Phelps fellow is going to run across someone who's not going to "take the high road" and will see to it that Westboro will.get.theirs. I'm predicting that this "someone" will not be out to slash tires, but instead will probably be packing some serious heat....

We have a hateful guy down here in Key West and I think he is a member of the Westboro Baptist Church because he stands on the corner of a major street with a "God hates fags" sign. WARNING- He also has a video camera because people come up and assault him (wonder why?) and he files police reports.
The thing is, he has all of the legal rights protest anything he wants!! You are not allowed to touch someone even if they are the lowest of the lowlife, like this guy. This congregation is scum but you have to ignore them. They want the attention and they are beyond hateful but DON"T do or say anything that you don't want on film.

Elizabeth was a supporter of gay rights and same sex marriage and that is the main reason why that group is protesting. Never mind why she died and all the good she did for the breast cancer cause. It is a hateful group and they will get theirs. Maybe not until they meet their Maker, but they sure aren't worth jail time here on earth. If everyone could just ignore them, they would be pretty ineffective IMO. Of course, we are too vulnerable to do that when we lose someone dear. Hateful indeed.
-
They thrive on attention...I think the best thing is just ignore them....with no audience they go away....they were in Denver last year protesting many of the synagogues!!! I won't even begin to dignify them by saying what I really think of this group. I feel for EE family to have to deal with this...

This makes me sick! A friend of mine's son was killed in Afghanistan and I know that during his funeral in California there were protesters there but there was also a counter-group that went to ensure there were no problems. Do these protesters think that my friend Hugh wanted to be burying his son or that Elizabeth's family want to be burying her? I don't get people sometimes and I am saddened at the state of humanity, or lack thereof.

If God gave me a "get out of jail free" card, I know what I'd do with it!!
I hope JE and family are able to hire security, or muster enough counter protesters that they don't get anywhere near it.
-
Fred Phelps and his kin are just awful.
I saw in comments to a local Raleigh news story that a counter-protest is being planned, a "wall of love" -- they are asking counter protestors to bring American flags to make a big flag screen between the mourners and the Westboro Baptists: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/vnn/2103537303.html

Let's see if we can get this info posted out there on fb...that's the perfect way to get the word out fast viral style....I put it on my status with a request to repost and pass along...Thanks for the info AnnNYC

That is disgusting what little respect that group has for grieving families. I don't even understand why they chose funerals to protest their hate.
In Baltimore the group was protesting at the funeral of Yardley something (i forget sorry) the college womens lacrosse player that was killed by her boyfriend last year. Well emails went out organizing a HUMAN SHIELD...thousands of people blocked the protesters so the family would not see them as they drove by. Thats seems like a great idea to do for Elizabeth Edwards and I am sure her community will pull together to do the same thing. It's a shame that this is something her loved ones have to think about at a time like this.
-
Unbelieveable and disgusting. Let the FAMILY grieve for God's sakes...................
-
i love the human shield, have heard about it working in many places. cannot believe that the protesters at funerals actually believe the God they say they know would condone their actions. Sorry, no religion advocates hate, just misguided followers advocate hate. have studied this, so think i am speaking from more than just emotion.
take care,

Just makes me sick in my stomach....

Love the idea of the human wall. And thanks so much AnnNYC for the info from Craigslist. I've posted the link and all info on my facebook page and asked others to do the same.
-
I like the idea of a human wall very much. Its not giving them attention as much as helping grieving families whoever they are. No one burying a family member should be subjected to just hidious inhumane behavior.
If I heard of such a wall in my town, I'd be willing to go help.

I am here in Cary-which is right next to Chapel hill and I haven't heard anything about this happening on the local news- at all!!!
Her funeral is about her life and her legacy not about this group of people. If they come or not I will refuse to even care or get angry about it-then we have given them the attention they are seeking. I have full confidence that this public funeral will have plenty of security and I am sure that the family is having a private one as well that noone knows about. All the anger that is focused on this womens husband and now this group is not what Elizabeth would want. She would want lots of chatter about her life and breast cancer.
-
My husband tells me this group tries to be si anniying that people will attack them and then they sue. I have not been following this but am just passing along what he told me.
-
I have seen it on my news about the protest and the counter protest. they said that the protester would only have 10-15 people. If I lived closer (I live about 5 hours away) I would be there as part of the wall of love.
Today is a public memorial service and a private burial service later.

I have done a little research on these yahoos, and indeed, suing people is their avocation. The only good that may come of their existence would be to galvanize counterprotestors to stand up for their beliefs. Michael Moore loaded a bus with gay people and followed Phelps around the country-love it.
There is a video on youtube of the patriot guard (biker group) lining the road with flags to shield grieving military families from the group's hatred and picketing.
May love and light reign today, RIP Elizabeth.
