Visible ripples in implants

Kate and Sweetie, well, we seem to be in the same boat, foob-wise. We have foreign feeling, tightness, happy with size C-ish with no wish to go bigger, and... ripples. We'll have to keep each other posted as time goes by. I'm in a holding pattern for 3-4 months to take a break from surgeries and to see how I feel about the ripples over time. Then I'll go back to PS and ask again about fat grafts. I think the thin skin/muscle issue may be our common problem. My worse ripple area feels like there is nothing between the implant and my skin. Weird.
That said, if I stand up straight, I am feeling pretty good about my outcome considering all I had done. So for now, I will make sure I stand up straight when I get out of the shower. If I stand straight with shoulders back, no ripples!
-
Deekay-I'm feeling the same as your right now and I agree we all seem to have the same common factors. At least we are not alone in this. I see my PS in Jan but in no rush for anything. I'm exactly like you when I stand up straight and keep shoulders tight they look awesome. It's just when I stand in a normal position or bend over they become very obvious. In a bra they look good enough My husband told me I tend to slouch because I'm tall and he said maybe it will teach/force me to stand up straight. They are definitely big enough. All the types of shirts I used to wear don't seem to feel/fit right. I used to be able to wear tiny tanks and sleeveless and V necks, now I'm going for boat necks and shirts that fully cover my chest. Sigh, after the holidays I'm cleaning my whole closet out and starting again.
On another note, I'm thinking of posting a ripple thread on the pic forum so I put only my ripple pics up (not revision and TE,etc) and anyone who wants to post theirs can too. This way we can sort of follow eachothers issues and journey and see if anyone out there can help us.
-
Sweetie, great idea for the pix forum. Had the same thought last week.
-
deekaay and sweetie- I was just telling my DH how similar our situations and problems are. It's like parallel lives in a BC universe. I'm in a holding pattern, too, as I'm just burned out on surgeries and procedures. Like you, sweetie, I had to purge my closet of a lot of my favorites (though my niece scored some nice clothes big time!) and now I'm wondering if I'd gone with a smaller implant if I'd be having all these issues. But, for now, I'll try to adopt a "soldier at attention" stance as much as possible. Lately, I have a small protrusion at the inside bottom of one breast that feels like part of the implant is poking out. Not sure what they could do about that.
I think the ripple thread on the pic forum is a great idea. I'll try to get my DH to take some new ones this weekend. I will be curious if anyone else has any words of wisdom. Still not sure if my insurance co. will pay for fat grafting if that is the answer. My PS said it's considered cosmetic but isn't this all cosmetic? It's not like, physically, we need to walk around with breasts. I think they should pay for whatever we need to restore us to our former selves which did not include seeing my boobs look like a Ruffles potato chip!
-
Kate33-I'm ditto for everything you said. I used to love those little tank tops and used to joke I had boobs like a teenager. Although I wished they were bigger back then, now I see the advantage of them having been smaller. I think it gave me a more "petite" appearance where now I feel "fuller". Oh well, it is what it is. I have all my clothes in bags in the basement. Going to have a big tag sale in the spring. At least your niece got some nice stuff out of the deal. I'll try to get my pics up soon. If one of you gets to start the thread first I'll just add to yours.
Not sure about why some Dr's get fat grafting covered and some due not. I agree it would seem to all be part of the reconstruction process and wouldn' t it be cheaper than another surgery.
Ruffles-lol you always make me laugh Kate33. Witty and feisty!!
-
I love the "yes they are fake ....
I will get the results back on the gene test this week. Will decide about the masectomy after that. My boobs are small but they are mine and if I can keep them without them killing me I want to. But at what odds am I willing to keep them? 25% chance of recurrence ? yes but @ 50% chance of getting this again? I do not think so. do you know of anyone that chose to have a double masectomy due to the gene?
-
Sweetie - you look beautiful
-
Kate - I too have pain and wonder about the placement with the pec muscle. Did you have any pain like this with the TE? Because I didn't. It is so bothersome to me.... just stupid little things like clothes shopping and looking through the racks at Ross, I'll be in pain for a day or two afterwards. It seems to me the worst motion is like a clapping motion, or even washing dishes.
Joanne -- Any input you have regarding the pec muscles and implant placement would be great. To me, it is almost as if the muscle is not being supported.... or perhaps with the Alloderm sling, it shortened the muscle causing it to be slack now..... does that even make sense at all? Again with the tissue expander I was fine and now with the implant it hurts. I'm going in for revision on Friday to a larger implant .....so hopefully that will correct the pain issue. I'll keep you all posted.
-
Sweetie -- Like the idea of the ripple thread on the picture forum. I was thinking I should probably take some new pictures before my surgery this Friday but I don't think they look any different from when I took the last pictures which I think was back in Sept. Pam
-
mrsbeasley- It's so difficult to advise someone on what to do. On one hand the new digital mammograms are really good at catching things early on. On the other hand I had multiple areas of DCIS that were never detected in a mammogram, ultrasound or MRI. I think it's all basically a crap shoot to tell you the truth. You can have the gene and never get BC. You can not have the gene and still get BC. I say do whatever gives you the best quality of life- whether that be peace of mind with a MX. Or not putting up with numb, fake breasts the rest of your life by going with a lumpectomy. BTW, is your photo a real Mrs. Beasley doll? I think I had one of those as a kid!
vanderlady- I had some pain with the TE's but it was always right after fills. Nothing like I'm feeling now- this constant ache. And the whole pec muscle thing is really bothersome for me, too. Even turning the steering wheel or trying to open a jar. I wonder if it's going to be like this forever or do we eventually get used to it? Wishing you good luck with your revision this Friday. Hope they can resolve things for you! Definitely keep us posted!
-
Kate -- Yes, turning the steering wheel.... OMG, I have noticed this time and time again. So frustrating. At least being a uni, I try to do more with my left than my right but I am right-hand dominant so definitely limited there. I'm hoping and praying this surgery helps out with the pain. :-) Pam
-
Claire-aww thanks.
Vanderlady-Your surgery is already Friday, wow. It's going to be here fast. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers. I'm hoping this will resolve all your ripple issues and maybe even eliminate the pain. I had a severe pain with my TE on the right and it had to be removed and replaced because of an open wound. After it was replaced the pain was gone. I wondered if the pain was because it was sitting right on a nerve or something.
Mrsbeasley- Kate gave you some good advice. It is such a hard and personal decision especially when you have options. I had the choice a lumpectomy or single or double MX. I ultimately choose the BMX because for me it was the way I would get the most peace of mind. It is a very personal choice though and what I did was made a list of pros and cons for each option. I then thought it over and realized there is no perfect solution but the one that felt right for me. In the end I felt I choose right because not only did I have the IDC they already found but I also had all types of LCIS and DCIS that never showed up on the MRI. I heard a speech by Dr. Susan Love and she said that 80% of women who get BC have no risk factors. Do all the research you can and ask questions and ultimately the choice will be what your heart tells you. I wish you the best.
-
Sweetie -- You know, I'm even at the point where if it doesn't help the ripples, I'm okay with that, just want to get rid of this pain every time I use my friggen arm! Thanks for the good wishes.... I know, the date came up fast.
-
Hello, I just wanted to share my experience over time with some pretty serious rippling...
I had my exchange surgery to silicone 375ml implants 7/09. On my small frame (5'2" and 106lbs) I ended up a 34D or more precisely 32DD (hard to find this size though). I have had two fat transfers to try to help with very significant rippling and the fat was reabsorbed almost immediately.
After taking up a campaign to take much better care of myself and exercising regularly for the last six months (v-e-r-r-y carefully) my ripples seem to be improving quite a bit. While I have to be very in tune with my pecs, not to overdo, overall I think that slightly increasing their size and strength may be helping to hold the implants and diminish the rippling.
I hope this may help some of you.
Julie

Wow what great comments. I am like you Sweetie. Found IDC on the left only with my mamo. But knowing I had such dense breasts that were so hard to read for the radiologists I decided to go bilateral mastectomy. On final pathology they also found DCIS on the left and LCIS in both breasts. So while I have at times regretted it due to the lack of sensation and all my complications etc. I know it was the right decision for me.
The thing to keep in mind that the surgeons don't really spend time on is the emotional impact of a mastectomy. It has been huge for me and I went into it feeling very strong. The body image issues ended up being huge for me. Maybe because of the complications and poor treatment by my surgeon and hospital. The lack of sensation is a much bigger issue than I thought. It changes the entire dynamic. But I am still glad I guess that I did it related to the pathology report.
I still have tightness and am going into my 8th week post op. I do think it gets better. I just talked to my PS who by the way is so wonderful!! If anyone needs a good PS in the Chicago area I can give you his name. I still don't know what I am going to do.
I think it will take us all a very long time to get the upper arm strength back. We have to face it I guess we will always have some sort of abnormal feeling in our chest since there is a foreign body in there. Hopefully it will just diminish.
Vanderlady good luck on surgery!
-
geysermom- Thanks for the input from someone who is further out in the process. Gives me hope that things may resolve over time.
-
Geysermom -- Thanks for your info. Do you do certain strengthening exercises for the pecs?
Determined -- Hang in there 8 weeks is still pretty early. Glad to hear you like your PS! Thanks for the good luck.
Kate -- I was thinking today about the pain with turning the steering wheel. Does your implant sit low or high as compared to your armpit? I have a bit of a space there because my implant sits a little low..... just wondering if that has something to do with it. Was reading onling about muscle imbalance, laxity or lengthening/ shortening and how that can cause pain.
-
geysermom - very interesting about the exercising. Although my PS said he didn't want the pec muscle specifically built up, no push ups, flys, or bench presses (he thinks they cause the implant to move) all other exercises are ok though.
vanderlady - so if you are having surgery you will be out of tennis again? That's what I have missed most about all this, playing tennis and seeing my tennis friends a few times a week.
-
vanderlady- My implant sit low as that's how my natural breasts were. I know another member who specifically requested that her implants be placed high and she doesn't have any of the pec muscle movement/pain issues I do. I never thought the placement of the implants would impact things but it makes sense.
vmudrow- I read the same thing- that exercising the pec muscles would cause the implants to gravitate more towards the armpits and that we should avoid it at all cost. I wish I had bookmarked the website I read it on. They did say building up the pec muscle would decrease the rippling but didn't advise it because of implant movement. Even augmentation girls are told to avoid working the pecs. So much conflicting information out there!
-
vanderlady-
How are you doing? I too have the pain you have described and have posted here about it.
Please let us know. hope your surgery was kind and you are feeling relief both physical and other.
Warm wishes,
Jessica
-
Kate -- Interesting about the placement. Try wearing bras that pull them up and in (front closing bras) and see if that helps. It was better too if I went down a size in the band because that brings them in more. Could only tolerate that for a week but by then the pain had subsided.
Jessica -- Sorry to hear you are having the pain too. What do you think is causing it? I'll have to look back at your posts.
Valerie -- Yes, I put my tennis bag in my closet to collect dust about 10 days ago. I had been playing on a B3 team but had to leave that team because I had to drop my club membership. Was practicing with an A4 team but I think I struggled a little at that level. I should be playing B2 or B1.... but I have decided I wasn't going to worry about that now..... I need to heal and I don't want to rush back into anything.... no temptations or pressure to play. I figured if and when I'm ready in late January/ early February, I'll look for a team. Who knows I may have to work full time by then to pay for all these bills.
I noticed today too that I seem to be having more sensation feeling.... guess that will change on Friday - ha.
-
Jessica -- Exactly how long have you been living with this pain? From your posts, I gather a few years.
p.s. -- okay, just found you on the picture forum.... left you a message there.
-
Vanderlady-just wanted to send you good wishes and you will be in my prayers for your surgery tomorrow. I hope everything turns out great, in fact I know it will!! Be peaceful and remember we are all thinking of you!
-
vanderlady- Just wanted to say good luck as well!! Really hope the Boob Fairy gets it right this time!
-
Thanks you guys.... I was in a pretty depressed mood most of the day....what a bad year both from a health standpoint and work-wise.... boy I'll be happy to say Good-Bye to 2010. Feeling better now.
Sweetie -- I transcribe for MxSecure and they are making us IC's go employee status as of January 1st.... not so sure I'm liking that. It has been 16 years since I've been an employee.
Thanks, Pam
-
Vanderlady, your day is almost here!!! We'll be wishing you well and anxious to here from you when you're feeling up to it.
deekaay
-
Hope it all went well vanderlady! I agree hope I never have a year like 2010!
My PS talked me into waiting until March for revision. Due to all my past complications he felt much safer waiting for these to be in for 6 months. The only bad part is meeting the out of pocket again. If we did it this month it would be totally covered. But overall I would rather be medically safe. I think he is hoping I will end up being ok with them. He was surprised when I said I was going ahead because I was having such a hard time deciding because it really isn't too bad.
But we will go up just 50cc on each side and place alloderm on the top and both sides. Hopefully 50cc won't make me look any bigger as I am big enough.
I had asked the PS about doing arm weights and he didn't say not to. Now reading what you guys are saying I am thinking I won't.
Have a good weekend everyone
-
I was glad there is a thread about the ripples, I have them bad ----also One side also is fuller than the other. (the one where I had a lumpectomy is larger and firmer) I am not happy with my Plastic surgery, If I bend over there are hollow indents because of the shifting of the implants. Should I seek another plastic surgeon and would that be comered my insurance???
-
Determined- You and I are in the exact same place. PS said to wait until March at least to decide on revision. 4 surgeries in one year enough for one body. I know she's right but I, too, will have to meet the deductible all over again. I do think I'm going to find a new PS, though, so maybe I can get the ball rolling in that direction if nothing else.
bestock- Revisions should all be covered by your insurance but there seems to be some discrepancy if you're just doing fat grafting to cover up the rippling. Some companies seem to be covering it and some not. But if it's a matter of making you symmetrical they should definitely cover that.
-
kate33 wow the similarities between us are amazing!
bestock if you like your PS talk with him/her to see what he suggests to make it acceptable. If he/she is not responsive find a new one. You deserve to have a sense of satisfaction. Knowing we will never be perfect we should at least be satisfied it is the best that it can be.
