I have not heard anything like that. I have heard that the more HER2+ you are the more likely you are to respond to Herceptin but again I don't know how true that is either.
Herceptin has not been out here that long. It has been studied more in advanced stage than in early stage. Have you presented this question to your oncologist?

Yes, I did just come across that information. I stick to medical sites like WebMD and Doctors Guide to the Internet. What it said was that triple positives don't metabolize Tamoxifen well and should use aromatose inhibitors which requires suppression or removal of ovaries. The Herceptin issue is that some women build a resistance to it. I am looking for info on how doctors can detect that - i think it is through a genetic test. My daughter is seeing a genetic counselor tomorrow so I will ask. We found out today that the margins were not clean and she has to have a mastectomy after she goes through a round of chemo.

My cancer was just Her+ and had great results from TCH just 1cm left when I had my mastectomy. Even the lymph nodes turned from +ve to -ve. Book for reconstuction after finishing my drug study on Neratinib

I too have heard that some triple positives don't respond to Tamoxifen. They think it's because most triple positives are not highly ER/PR positive. (I'm only 30% ER and 5% PR myself).
Aromatose inhibitors do not require suppression or removal of ovaries in post menopausal women.

Melania,
I asked my oncologist how we know if I am responding to herceptin. She said "you are HER 2 + so of course you will respond to herceptin".
Here is my story: Had IDC stage 2a triple + and 2 nodes.
Started neoadjuvant chemo AC-TH on May 5th. Finished chemo on Sept 1st. Had surgery on Nov 15th. Got my Path report last Friday saying that the tumor was gone and no malignancy in the nodes. I had 7 nodes removed. So in other words I had complete pathological response. The chemo worked. Was it the AC who did it?? For sure as I felt stubbing and burning sensations in the tumor and arm pit area during AC. Was it TH??? I think so as I had similar sensations where the tumor was. I honestly felt like something was punching my tumor and could even see that area of the breast pulsing. The oncologist said those sensations where because the tumor was shrinking. My tumor was 1.6cm

I found the following page helpful when I was looking for info on ER/Her2. It's full of links to different studies and trials (they are a few years old however, more up to date info is probably out there as well I just haven't found much yet).

I went to google - typed in herceptin resistance and got some good MEDICAL site with information. I do this for every question I have. Also about tamoxifin metabolism rates in HER2 +++. But go to only the medical sites or the site run by organizations like this one with quality information and medically trained moderators.
