Thyroid cancer 2 years after bc

Molly,
Since I have Hashimotos, I will defer to Science and my Endocrinologist for my care, thanks! (but no thanks)
-
Squidwitch,
Yes, I'm deferring to science also, which why I suggested you respect the main tenets of science which are observation and curiosity.
But I certainly can understand if your your mind is closed. Tho I would think you would want to investigate more since Hashi's puts you at higher risk for breast cancer.

Hello Ladies,
I am a 10 year BC survivor... just had my 3rd recurrence this year and when I had my right breast removed prophalatically on 10/27/10... it turns out it was in that breast as well.
I'm so glad I found this topic, because I am just at a loss for words at the moment. Had a pet scan in July 10' to check for metastasis and there was a hot spot on my thyroid (suv of 4.0) my breast cancer was only a suv of 2.5. Anyway, had an ultrasound, then a fine needle biopsy last Friday and it came back as papillary carcinoma. This is a whole new ball game for me. Ten years of research on BC, but I don't know a thing about thyroid, just getting educated now. I would appreciate any advice on the subject. I'm currently looking for the best thyroid surgeon and specialist in my area. I'm in Orlando, FL... if anyone is in the area or close by and can recommend a doctor in my area that would be most appreciated!!
Thank you for taking the time to read my post. It helps to know that we are in this together and we are not alone.

K9Kim - I was dx'd with Thyroid papillary cancer in Oct, I am having a partial thyroidectomy (right side only) on Tuesday 11-23-10. My endo says that since we found it so early, I would not need any RAI or supplements. My DH & I researched thyroid cancer and it is easily treated and rarely ever spreads beyond the lymph in the neck.
When I have recovered from this surgery, I am going to pursue Hormone Balancing through bio-identical natural treatment options to try to bring some balance in my life.
You are in my prayers for a gentle treatment plan.

o2bhealthy, thank you for your words of encouragement. I would really like to go that route, partial thyroidectomy. Mine is very small only about 1cm (right side as well). A wonderful lady I met on this site has put me in touch with a really good surgeon, I am hoping to get in to him and he will be of the same mind set?? :-)
I have read Suzanne Somers book "Breakthrough" (about BHRT) and am currently reading her new book "Knockout". I found both to be a wealth of information.
Best of luck to you with your surgery next week. I will keep you in my prayers! Please keep me posted.

hopefor30, thank you for sharing your story and information with me. I don't know why, but I am having such a hard time with removing my thyroid? I am such a huge advocate for keeing things intact and your body functioning the way it was intended to without being on medication the rest of my life to regulate my thyroid in it's absence. Is that absolutely crazy?! I keep going over and over it in my head and I can't seem to get to a place where I am ok with it. It's not the surgery so much, as being without my thyroid & being on a medication to regulate it forever. I am a all natural girl all the way, but I find more and more with cancer, that you are thought of as a quack when you don't do what is recommended. I had the pet scan on 7/13/10, how it was picked up in my thyroid and FNB on 11/12/10, confirmed papillary carcinoma 11/16/10. It's just at 1cm. But already been 4 months. And now my surgeon is saying it is ok to wait another 2-3 months for my surgery so we can combine the stage 2 breast reconstruction surgery with my thryoidectomy (if I so choose to do it and I'm not sure I have a choice... if I want to live?) I am definitely NOT doing the RAI treatment, no matter what they say, I'll just plain take my chances. Cancer treatment options are such a personal choice and each one of us has to make our own decisions and one's that we can live with for the rest of our lives. I haven't even asked the stage of my thyroid cancer, I need a copy of my full pathology report, forgot to get that. I'll call and ask for one so I have it in my records. Funny thing is, they weren't even going to follow up on the hot spot in my thyroid after the pet scan, not one doctor was a bit concerned about it? I was the one that read the report and noticed it said it was recommended that it needed further evaluation via ultrasound or cat scan, as they were unable to determine what it was. SO, I followed up. I guess that's a reminder to all of us to be in charge of our own health, ask questions, get second opinions, 3rd or 4th if needed and go with your gut, it's your life and we only have one time around at this.
God bless all of you!! Thank you for responding, it always helps to know you are not alone in what you're going through, that there are others that have experienced the same thing.
Sending peace and warm hugs to all of you!
Kim :-)

Hello,
I also had papillary thyroid cancer after having had breast cancer twice. I
had a good thyroid surgeon at M Anderson, Houston, TX. I take synthroid every
day without any problem. I didn't have any further treatment after my thyroidectomy.
I was also worried about having to take synthroid for the rest of my life. It's good that
you read all your reports and ask questions. My best to you.

k9kim - I just had a partial thyroidectomy for my papillary cancer. on 11-23-10. We found it via a thermogram that indicated thyroid dysfunction. Thank God my GP was willing to follow the recommendations of the radiologist and ordered a US. Because we caught it so early (5mm) I was able to keep the left half of my thyroid and we are hoping that it will function well enough that I won't have to take supplements. I totally understand your concern about removing the gland and having to supplement. Have you asked about partial thyroidectomy???
I am completely with you on no RAI, my girlfriends daughter had RAI and 48 days later she set off radiation alarms while traveling out of the country. Good for you for being your own advocate. I am hoping you are able to come to a decision that makes since for you..

There is evidence that poor thyroid function can contribute to breast cancer. My doctor found that my thyroid was not functioning properly due to not having enough selenium. I was also very low in vitamin D.
