Flaxseed enhances Herceptin treatment in mouse
Publication: Food and Chemical Toxicology, August-September 2010
Study name: Flaxseed oil-trastuzumab interaction in breast cancer
A newly published study has reported that flaxseed oil enhances the effectiveness of Herceptin in reducing tumor growth in a mouse model of HER2 overexpressing breast cancer. Herceptin is used for breast cancer that overexpresses human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2). However, tumors typically eventually develop resistance to Herceptin. Flaxseed oil, which is rich in the omega-3 fatty acid alpha linolenic acid, has been shown to reduce HER2 expression and signaling in estrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer. In the study, mice had their ovaries removed, HER2 overexpressing tumors were established in the mice, and estrogen pellet implants were administered to promote tumor growth. The mice were then divided into groups which were administered either Herceptin (2.5 or 5 mg/kg body weight) or no Herceptin and given either a basal diet or the basal diet plus dietary flaxseed oil. Weekly measurements were taken of palpable tumor area.
Tumors in the untreated mice grew 187% whereas tumors of mice treated with 2.5 mg/kg Herceptin did not change in size. On the other hand, tumors of mice treated with 5 mg/kg Herceptin were found to shrink by 75% after four weeks of treatment, tumors of mice treated with flaxseed oil plus 2.5 mg/kg Herceptin shrank 89%, and tumors of mice treated with flaxseed oil plus 5 mg/kg Herceptin shrank 84%. Flaxseed oil plus 2.5 mg/kg Herceptin was found to result in significantly lower tumor cell proliferation and higher cell death compared to 2.5 mg/kg Herceptin treatment alone, and had an effect similar to that of 5 mg/kg Herceptin treatment with or without flaxseed oil. The authors conclude that flaxseed oil enhanced Herceptin's tumor-reducing effects. Furthermore, the combination of flaxseed oil and low dose Herceptin was as effective as high dose Herceptin treatment in the mice.

Just a note to say that if you add flaxseeds to your diet to stay with the oil or ground flaxseeds since I have read that whole flaxseeds do not break down in our bodies so we get no nutrients from them.....
-
Actually, it is good to have both the flaxseeds and the oil in our diets. You are right about the whole flaxseeds not getting broken down. I put mine in a coffee grinder and eat them seconds later.
Interesting book on this subject is "The Healing Power of Flax".
There is also an alternative protocol for treating cancer, called the Budwig Protocol, which has flax seed oil as a core ingredient.

I take flaxseed oil everyday, but put it in the freezer and take it frozen. I don't like the taste of it and by the time it thaws, my stomach has already been to work on it.
-
Thanks for the info. I think I will buy some flax seed oil when I get some money!
-
Also golden flax seed is better than brown flax seed. And,always make sure with the ground flax seed to follow with a glass of water-because if it adds fiber you must add water...I need to get back in the habit of taking it, when I did health wise I was much better.

I've been eating a bowl of oatmeal every morning with ground flax seed and L-Glutamine powder mixed in. The L-Glutamine is supposed to help with neupopathy from the Taxol. I'm excited to hear that the flax might help out with the Herceptin! Yay!
-
I bought some ground flax seeds from store. Seem uncooked, do I need to bake it first? This is the first time every I try the seeds. It tasted bitter. Is the bitterness normal
? Thanks.
