Hi,

My oncologist mentioned that there're clinical trials to study the herceptin duration. One study is 6mths vs 12mths, the other is 12 vs 24 months. Neither has had any final results out. I'm curious anyone knows any preliminary results?

thanks!

Good question. I have been on it almost a year. I am almost finished. I am getting nervous about that. I am wondering if being on it longer actually offers any benefit.

This same question has been brought up several times all over this site.  I hope we find out soon, too.  I just finished my last one, but I sure would welcome more if they thought it was beneficial!  The last I had heard, I remember reading somewhere but don't remember where, that they were expecting the 2yr results to be released sometime early in 2011.  I don't know if that's still the case or not.  My own onc seems to think one year is probably going to be more than enough, especially since now they are finding that herceptin can work even in some low HER2 level tumors, but they seem to need more time on it than the higher HER2+ ones.  Who knows.  I still think there is a lot of speculation and disagreement to how herceptin really works (does it actually kill the cells or does it just halt their division? I don't know all the details, but I know there is still so much unknown.)  The only reason we as early stagers even get this drug is because the studies showed such a drastic improvement in recurrence rates.  None of it is fine tuned yet, even this far out from the initial studies is really not that far out in terms of scientific research!
