    Hi

I had chemo for 6 months then a month ago had a double masectomy. The pathology came back with all 9 of my nodes positive. Right now my doctors are deciding on whether or not to give me more chemo now or after radiation which I should be starting in a few weeks. Has anyone had to have chemo twice? Anyone with IBC and similar treatments I would love to hear from you.

    Thanks

I don't have the triple negative like you, but I did have 2 rounds of chemo. I would have had it no matter what. That's how it was scheduled. I had my first round right after I was dx. Then was suppose to have a dbl mx, then 2nd round of chemo, then radiation. However they decided to give me the 2nd round of chemo first. They had been doing studies and the farther away from radiation they get it the less likelyhood I would get leukemia afterwards. So it went chemo, chemo.surgery, radiation. I don't know where you are from, but I think I would ask to have the 2nd round of chemo first. Anything to get farther away from maybe getting Leukemia afterwards. It was to put the % rate from 2% to 35%. So I was all for it. Just my opinion. Hope that helps you out. (((HUGS)))  Leisa

I had chemo before my double mastectomy (6 cycles) and then I had chemo after surgery (4 cycles). Radiation came about two weeks after I finished chemo.  My onc had said that prior to my surgery he was on the fence about giving me more chemo, but since I still had some positive nodes after surgery he said more chemo. Nothing was ever mentioned about having the second chemo before versus after radiation.

    Hugs,

Hi Jadlaz, I am an IBC survivor. I was diag. 2003 with IBC stage IIIB.  I had chemo for close to 9 months after my diag.  Then I had a mastectomy followed by radiation.  My cancer returned 9 months later apparent by the red, warm rash on my mastectomy site.  My onc felt that surgery was not going to get all the cancer so he had me start Herceptin {it was a new drug then} along with a round of Carboplatin.  It worked quickly to get rid of the skin mets.  I stayed on Herceptin for 5 years only stopping when Hercepton was effecting my heart.  I had 3 recurences when I had to take breaks because of my heart. I have been off herceptin and cancer free for 3 years. I have survived 7 years this past Oct. .2010.  Did your cancer occur in any organs?   I did have 3 lymph nodes that were positive but my cancer only appeared on my mastectomy site.  I was very fortunate it never went to any organs.   Hope to hear from you. Best wishes,  MaryLouise

    Thanks for your responses.

Leisa: I'm not sure what you mean by lukemia? Is that a possible side effect from radiation?

Monika: I think my doctor was probably thinking the same thing as they say I presented with a very advanced stage.

Marylouise: I am glad to hear from someone with IBC that is doing so well.  I won't be able to use the Herceptin as I am triple negative.

Thanks again for responding. I love the support you get from this site.
