I have several favorites, but the one that probably impacted me the most was Anticancer, A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber. This is the book that made me rethink my prior veganism and realize that there are healthful animal products instead of the industrial ones pushed on us by the food industry. It also helped shape my thinking to cram foods/herbs/spices that fight cancer into every meal, every single day.

I have dozens of books on fighting cancer, so let me think about it and I'll figure out the best 3-4 others that influenced me the most!

I third the Anti-Cancer book.  My favorite post treament book since I did not find it till after treatment. Very postitve and well supported.

I really liked "Speak the Language of Healing, how to live with cancer without going to war. " It is not for everyone, but if you are someone who does not feel comfortable with the war metaphore usually associated with cancer you might like it.  it was written by 4 woman with different strong spiritual backgrounds who have very different breast cancer diagnosis but who are all pacafists who believe that you can fight for your life and health without hating and going to war with the cancer in your body.

I also loved"kitchen table wisdom" which is a book over short essays by a doctor/therapist who specializes in helping people who are terminally or very seriously ill find emotional/spiritual growth.

"Breast Cancer Husband, how to help your wife and yourself during diagnosis, treatment and beyond was also very good."  I read it myself and found it very helpful, at least at the begining when your head is spinning from all the information.

"Cancer vixon" is a well done grafic novel of the BC journey, if you like that sort of thing.  Just follows the authors journey, it is an emotional experience not an educational one.

Thanks so much for posting this discussion.  I knew I was keeping track of my favorite books for a reason.  I read lots of books about cancer - most do not make my list.  I found many cancer books too depressing and not helpful for finding ways to improve health and improving chances for remaining cancer free.

I agree with others as far as the number 1 book - "Anti-Cancer" by David Servan-Schreiber

"The Vitamin D Solution: a 3-Step Strategy to Cure Our Most Common Health Problems" by Michael F. Holick, Ph.D., M.D.  Dr. Holick is the authoritative source for info on Vitamin D.  I've recommended this book to many people concerned about health - not just those concerned with cancer.

"The Anti-Estrogenic Diet" by Ori Hofmekler.  Great book for those concerned with excess estrogen.  Includes info on estrogen in the environment and foods, and what food and herbs are anti-estrogenic

"Traditional Chinese Medicine: a Woman's Guide to Healing from Breast Cancer" by Nan Lu, O.M.D., L.Ac.  I'm really interested Chinese medicine now.  While I went along with the lumpectomy and radiation and now tamoxifen, I think much can be gained from their less invasive methods of treating cancer.

"Integrative Oncology" by Dr. Abrams and Dr. Weil.  Seemed more for medical staff but found it useful as a reference tool

"The Cancer Fighting Kitchen" by Rebecca Katz (cookbook)  Best cookbook I found.

The following are more for those looking for more "unique" alternatives (at least unique compared to what most western doctors suggest):

"Cancer-Free: Your Guide to Gentle, Non-Toxic Healing" by Bill Henderson For those who are really interested in alternatives.  I can't say I followed recommendations except improvements to diet and exercise.

"The Detox Book" by Bruce Fife  Really wanted to learn about detoxing.  Might not be for everyone.  I went thru a 4 week detox program with my naturopath.

"Doctor Yourself" and "Fire Your Doctor" by Andrew Saul.  Offers much common sense/natural solutions to many illnesses.

Thanks again for posting this thread.  I've already ordered some books that others have suggested!

I would like to add Getting Well Again by O. Carl Simonton, MD. He was a radiology oncologist and provides a scientific basis for the "will to live" He answers the question of why do some patients get well and others die, when the prognosis is the same.

Life Over Cancer by Keith Block, MD who runs an integrative cancer clinic in Evanston, IL. I actually went there after reading the book.

The other books I loved are 3 books by Greg Anderson a lung cancer survivor who was given 30 days to live in 1984 and is still alive and well today. The books are entitled:

    Cancer: 50 Essential Things to Do;

22 Non-Negotiable Laws of Wellness: Take Your Health Into Your Own Hands To Feel, Live and Think Better

    Cancer Conqueror.

I have read all the books mentioned so far and they all bring somethhing to the table.. I also went for a consult with Dr. Donald Abrams who co-wrote the book mentioned above on integrative oncology. I got a lot more out of the Block Center though.

    Happy reading!

It's been a little over a year since I started my BC library..I have most of the ones mentioned above such as...Anticancer, A New Way of Life by David Servan-Schreiber is not only informative it is inspirational........One of my favorites is Foods to Fight Cancer (Essential Foods to help prevent Cancer) by Beliveau and Gingras..I have now purchased about 5 of these to give as gifts...I just purchased another one to take to my sister-in-law who had to deal with thyroid cancer...It is a very basic, easy read, colorful beneficial book for any type of cancer and or healthy choice living....I can tell you that I took most of the info to heart in all of these books, although confusing at times, you just use the info that makes sense to you...Best ot reading to you, it does help you get some control back into your life!!

The book I found to be the best guide for me was Shattering the Cancer Myth by Katrina Ellis. I was lent this book and then searched everywhere for my own copy, just bought the new edition now as well.  It has a lot of helpful info for other cancers as well as breast cancer and was written by a naturapath who beat terminal cancer herself years ago.  It is such a positive inspiring guide and I still refer to it now 2 years on.  Hope this helps and I wish you all the best with your treatment, stay strong :)
