Good to hear from you Joy. Hey, it's raining and cold here today, and it's supposed to freeze tonight. Ugh. Well, I guess it was inevitable! Will make us glad when spring finally comes, that is for sure. I have to figure out what to do with 4 tropical potted plants in the yard. They need protection of some sort, and my DH says there is no room in his junk filled garage! Apparently the crawl space is too small. Oh he was just saying we should put them in the Bonus room where we're always hanging out. I will report back. Tropical Plant Saga!
I may try to exercise today. I have been doing gentle yoga and even down dogs, though they told me not to lift over 10 lbs for 2 weeks. I did a down dog gently and experimentally, and didn't hold too long. Nothing exploded out of stitches or anything! Today I am thinking of the eliptical, though I am still in this compression garment. Maybe walking would be best, thought it's raining.
I ramble on! ha! Hope you all are well and finding a way to move your bod!

Hello to all,
I'm new to the board and to BC. I'm still recovering from my BMX/bilateral reconstruction of Sept 8th/2010. I've had delayed wound healing due to infections whcih resulted in the lose of my left implant (I still have a TE on my right side). I completed healing from the indections on the day that I had a port implanted and so now healing from it. I have yet to start chemo, it is scheduled for the Nov 9th. I have been so DE-motivated by all this that I'm i a negative thought pattern of how to get out.
I have great thoughts and have even tried to get out and walk a bit, but I end up knackered by even the smallest exertion.
I'm hoping to find motivation to get my body moving again while I go through chemo. I'm mentally motivated, but doing it on my own is a struggle as right nwo I can talk myslef out if it so easily.
I hope to be able to find something here at BCO to help me through this whole ordeal and get me back ont he road to feeling well again.
-
PitPat, welcome and sorry for your situation. You are not alone! When I was in chemo, I went to Physical/Occupational therapists who were specialists in dealing with cancer patients in treatment. I never felt like doing the walking or exercise but once I would make the longest journey (from the sofa to my sneakers!) it got better. I always felt better after I did it. The key is to do it, but you are not to push yourself too hard. They would target where my heart rate would be, it was a nice pace of walking, but not as fast as I go now. There are now studies to show that staying active during treatment is better for you. Our bodies are designed to move, it helps them remember!
-
Welcome Pitpat. You are on the right board. Every step is in the right direction and this group will help push you some and help. Walking helped me get through my treatments or else it was the pesky dog that pestered till I took her out and that ended up as a walk. Exercise helps with the stress and it will make you feel better too. Encouragement, friendship and counseling all on one site. What more could you ask for?
Speaking of encouragement - where is Ainm? Take it easy Spring and go slow. Warm weather is coming for this week after a cold weekend.
-
Hi all! I have been slammed. Deanna my walk is the 19th of November. I am soooo tired of training. I am so excited it is finally here.
As you can imagine I have been walking my butt off. As soon as this is over, back to the gym and weight training. I need to do something different.
Pitpat you are in the right forum. We are such a supportive group and these wonderful ladies can help you through it all.
Happy Monday everyone!!!
-
Happy Monday. I'm being a bad girl and eating lunch at my desk (I rarely do this!). I'm so pooped from throwing my DD's baby shower yesterday, which turned out beautiful in spite of an awful STORM! Can you believe 80 degrees every single day until yesterday when all HECK broke loose, today cold 60 degrees. I had THE BEST TIME spending the weekend with my DDs. It was sure hard watching everyone drive off but still have a smile on my face.
PitPat, please keep us posted and we ARE HERE FOR YOU!! Take it easy and it will help you push through. I'm a couple years ahead of you in my 'journey' and it wasn't an easy one at time, this stuff sure messes with your mind, but knowing we are all here for one another really does help. We are a positive group and will do our best to help.
Hugs all, I need to move my butt after work!!!!!!!!! UGH!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, Joy, jobs must not be as tough to come by in NC as they are in some places if you have new hires quitting before they start! I hope you get another quality employee soon. It sounds like the one you have is already making your life considerably better. And I'm so sorry about your friend's brother. I will pray that they find him. Did he have reason to want to disappear?
And WELCOME PitPat! Great to have a new face here! And good luck with chemo tomorrow! As far as the negative thought patterns, they're so normal. How could any of us go through what you're going through and not feel negative? I'm a firm believer in walking, not just for exercise, but for the emotional healing the time alone to think things through can provide. I know it may be a challenge during chemo, but if you can get outdoors and walk even a little bit, I think it will help your emotional state. I'm also a believer in music to heal our souls. I find it immediately changes my mood when I turn up a favorite CD or XM radio station.
Well, gals, today is my 30th wedding anniversary, and I don't think I would appreciate my DH nearly as much if we hadn't been through all that we have in the past 2-1/2 years. He has truly been the wind beneath my wings. BC is a heck of a way to find out how devoted someone is to you, but it also makes days like today all the more special. Deanna
-
Deanna, so true!!! happy 30th. I hope you enjoy a nice quiet and special evening.
-
Thanks, Diane.
I also wanted to share a fun link with you all. I may have posted this a couple of weeks ago, but there was a copyright issue with the sound, so it wasn't working. But it's fixed now. I met these great ladies at a recent event @ UCLA, and absolutely LOVE their attitude! They even included me in the headshots. I just posted this on my FB page, but not all of us here are on FB. PitPat, I hope this makes you smile today! Deanna
-
Congratulations Deanna!!! That is really something! I know what you mean about DH. I feel the same about mine. Have a lovely time celebrating!
-
I don't like the sound of listening for exploding stitches! Yoga does feel so good though doesn't it.
Pitpat, welcome, we are here for you during chemo and after. One of the best pieces of advice I got before chemo was to do something every day even if it was to just walk around your house once. There were some days it was like running a marathon getting around the house once, but, it really does help. Don't know what regimen you're getting. I was a yoga fan before, but am really a fan now. Gentle yoga stretching I swear was the only thing that helped with the taxotere muscle aches.
Deanna congrats.
Sounds like everyone is well. I'm down 5 lbs. I'm so happy I'm doing the happy dance and will lose more. Been a long time getting here. I feel like it is a big F------ to cancer with every pound that goes away. I've had to back off the lifting my LE is really acting up. I don't believe it makes it worse, but, it hurts enough it stops some of what I can do. Not enough to spoil the fun getting on that scale!
-
Deanna = DANCE!!!!! And congrats
Nice days and chilly at nights but this type of weather is okay. No humidity!! Worked in Libby's yard and that was rough. No one has done anything in the front flower bed in over 20 years. We are finding bricks that no one knew were there. We last a few hours and then quit.
No one really knows what happened to my friends' brother. He did have a small fire in his trailer that he forgot to turn the stove off and they wanted him to start working nights. Diabetic, drinking and taking drugs just doesn't mix.
-
KMMD, Congrats on teh 5 pounds and the happy dance!
Joy, nice to hear from you.
I got up an hour early by accident, bedroom clock was not set back! ha! So I did 50 minutes of Yoga. It was nice. My body is healing already, however still a bit sore and swollen! taking it easy compared to the normal routine...
-
Just returned from the first decent walk I've had in weeks. As you know, I complained all summer about it being too hot, but now that it's suddenly cooled off quite a bit and it's not critical to get out before the sun gets high, I procrastinate. Then I get too busy or it turns out to be not as convenient later in the day as I thought it would be. So by today I was feeling incredibly sluggish, but after 5.5 miles I can literally feel my body rev'ing up again. I'm just gonna have to not deviate from walking first thing in the a.m.
Congrats on the 5 lbs. kmmd! That's fantastic!
Hope everyone's having a nice Veteran's Day. PitPat, did you have your first chemo infusion this week? Deanna
-
Deanna, good for you! That sounds like a great walk!
I did a bit of yoga at home today, and it will be 2 weeks since my surgery tomorrow and so my "do not lift anything over 10 pounds" is up! I can get slowly back into the gym. However, now I feel so lazy. LOL. ugh. Just do it!! (This is what I will have to tell myself!!)
-
Worked two days on Aunt Libby's yard and that should count for a lot. She wrecked her car and now worried she is going to lose her driving privlege. She will be 90 in January. Sorry but I hope they take them. Susan is sick so I have been doing things for her(Aunt Libby). That lady will go to the grocery store every day if you let her. Not me!!
Back on nights. I have Tues/Wed off this week and then start training another person for the front desk. This will be the 3rd one since October. One never made it in the door before quitting. Going to see my son over Thanksgiving. I don't think we have spent a holiday together in over 30 years. He always went to his dad's hunting. My baby turned 34 yesterday. He feels old so I won't say what I feel! Warm during the days and in the 40's at nights. I love it but hate hearing my heater run at nights.
Everyone have a great holiday. Looks like we have some MIA's. Getting my hair trimmed on Tues, Can't get use to having it cut every 6 weeks. Still can't decide whether I want it long or keep it short. Both have advantages.
-
So Hello All!
This weekend I went to the gym twice, did yoga, and went cycling for an hour each day! Yesterday I took a break. The weights at the gym - I had to be really careful, but it worked. Working on reducing the LE now -- the surgery, the lack of weights, I have my work cut out for me!
Hope all is well.
This podcast by Dr. Susan Love is interesting, and you may agree or not with all she says. But again, it was mentioned that EXERCISE can PREVENT A RECURRENCE by changing the environment in our bodies (along with plant based diet and serenity practices like yoga...)

Hi all! Today I leave for San diego for my walk. It is supposed to rain, YUK! I am so glad I opted not to camp, wet during the day is bad enough. Please think good thoughts, I'll need them. I am excited my son will be there to cheer me on. My husband is coming tomorrow to tend my feet. I'll try and post during the weekend.
-
Spring, I listed to the podcast yesterday, thanks for posting!
Diane, best of luck - YOU GO GIRL!!!!
Ladies, I have been seriously slacking off...but the last 2 nights did 20 minutes of movement in one minute increments, kind of like mini-aerobics and then stretching...trying to get back in the swing of things.
-
Diana - You GO GIRL!!! Good luck!
Well, I have gotten back into the cardio! Cycled for an hour both days last weekend, and did Gentle Yoga Tues (that went fine) eliptiand then last night 60 min oncal the cross trainer. That was a great work out. I am still sore from surgery, (will be 3 weeks tomorrow already!) but none of these activities bother me! I've been back in the gym, doing the weights, trying to get my LE back under control -- I know it will just take a while. Oh well. At least it's good for my bones too, ha!
It's autumn here in NC, and the leaves are so pretty, yellow and red, etc. The other day, it was like "snowing" colorful leaves outside. I could barely take my eyes off of it.... Hard to concentrate on work!
Hope you all are well.
Keep Moving Kari! You're doing it!
-
Thinking of you Diane. Maybe the rain will hold off.
Heard that this is the peak weekend for fall colors down here. But suppose to be in the upper 60's this weekend and maybe 70 for T'day. I'll be further up the coast with my son. Have a great weekend.
-
Can't wait to hear about your walk, Diane! I hope you'll post pictures for us! I will be thinking of you and sending you strong energy vibes! I'm so motivated by what you're doing!
Spring & Joy ~ The fall colors in NC sound so pretty -- and perfect for Thanksgiving.
Kari, I'd also been slacking off and was starting to feel horrible. But, like you, I've been a bit better this week, walking so far a total of 12 miles (over 3 days). But I'm in a quandry about my health club membership. I love the stationary bikes, but almost every time I do upper body weights, which I need and am seeing results from, I end up with truncal LE on my mx side. The classes are so crowded, they haven't appealed to me. At this point, I'm thinking of dumping my membership and buying a stationary bike, but not sure what to do about upper body without aggrevating the truncal LE.
Have a great weekend, everyone! Deanna
-
Oh Deanna, the upper body weights HELP me with the truncal LE, what a pain! But, I have noticed that any "inversion" in Yoga (going up side down, like Down Dog or shoulder stand) flares it up.
I hate the LE.
Good luck with what to do about the Gym membership.... I go to a gym that just has cardio and weight machines - no showers, no pools, no classes. it is clean and just 12 a month! I have an eliptical cross trainer at home.
-
I would love to join this group. I'm almost done with rads and I've got to get some weight off before I return to work. I am hoping that if I have somewhere to share and talk to others it will help me to reach my goal.
Stacy
-
Hey, Stacy ~ Glad you've found us! Some of us here were exactly where you are (in fact a few of us had been on a rads thread together) when mumayan started this thread, so we know just how you're feeling! When will you be finished with rads? Deanna
-
Hi Deanna,
I will be done with rads by Christmas, then I go back to work just after New Years. That's why I'm anxious to work on my endurance, strength, and of course get some of this weight off of me.
What has everyone done to work out while on rads?
Are there are diets or plans that you found helpful?
Thank you!
Stacy

Stacy, I started by walking, and I'm still walking (at least an hour a day) for my primary exercise. But I live in Southern California, where our weather is conducive to being outdoors year 'round. I had read that extra body fat allows our bodies to make more estrogen, so I just stopped eating things that are high in fat. For example, I went from buying full fat yogurt, which has 10 grs. of fat, to really enjoying plain, non-fat yogurt with berries, flax, granola, etc. I virtually stopped eating beef, pork and dishes laden with cheese and started cooking more chicken and fish. Personally, I don't believe in diets. I just started reading labels on anything packaged (like the yogurt) and asking myself what my body really needed, and if the food I was selecting was the healthiest choice I could make. Just doing those two main things, I easily dropped the 7 lbs. I'd put on during chemo, plus about 5 more, went down a pants size, and really slimmed down my legs. Deanna
-
How did the walk turn out?
Hi all, I've been MIA I know. DH getting on me a little tonight about how many hours I'm working. The diet went to heck this week, but, I've been loyal to the exercise routine so the end result isn't too too bad. Long hours and fatigue are a killer for me, stress, fatigue leads to eating wrong, leads to YUCK. Oh well, this week I'll try to exercise AND eat better
Did yoga at dusk tonight. I thought to myself, well, what a great mood setting. I'll do yoga without turning the lights on, I'll exercise as it turns dark, how relaxing. BIG mistake. When I can't see I can't compensate for the crappy balance from the neuropathy. It was not pretty. Sigh. Sounded good
Keep moving everyone. Sounds like we're all having a hard time with parts of the routine right now, but, just think about how many months we've been at it. This is a life committment and change, doesn't have to be a professional sportsman's work out every day.
-
Was mid 60's here today, we were able to cycle for an hour on the greenway. I wore ear warmers! We have a few more warm days prior to Thanksgiving Thursday, when it will rain and get cold. I bet we'll cycle all days. I guess after this, we'll have to put the bikes up until SPRING! Weights tomorrow. Meant to get to the gym today, but daughter came home from college and I visited with her, which was nice.
Stacy, I went to a PT during chemo and rads, and was given 45 min of daily walking and other exercises to do - light weights, even plank! It helped. I never got the RADS fatigue (I was also working just half time through RADs and I normally work full time). I am also very fussy about what I eat now, and have lost weight since treatment (I am on Tamoxifen). I exercise as much as I can, I do yoga, and weights. I eat a plant based diet, (organic everything I can) no dairy (this is my new thing), low sugar, no alchohol. I do eat eggs each week (6) and fish occasionally. I see an osteopath and take supplements that are cancer preventative. I also do not "diet" (as Deanna said) and I don't focus on weight loss. I just focus on living clean and healthy.
I hope you can find support here to get moving! When I was in treatment, I often did not "feel like" exercising, but I always felt better after I did. Walking is excellent!

Happy turkey week everyone!!!
the walk was so wonderful. the amount of supporters that came, yes in the rain, to cheer us on was unbelievable.
Day 1 started in Del Mar and ended up in Mission Bay. The weather was beautiful. No sun and not too hot. The views on the beach were spectacular.
Day 2 had us waling through Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and any other beach around. The weather did not hold up on that day. Luckily we had much gear to keep us kind of dry. My wonderful DH and DS were around to help bring supplies and much needed coffee. By the time we got back to the camp we were spent.
Day 3 was a little better. The rain did not come down as hard and did not last as long. By the time we got to mile marker 14 we shed the ponchos and sweatshirts. Our wonoderful husbands were also there to pick up, and do whatever we needed done. When we crossed the finish line I cried. The spectators were so energetic and supportive.
The closing ceremony was truly beautiful. The survivors I was with were an inspiration. When they found out I was an 11 month survivor they all hugged me and cried.
I got back yesterday and was in bed by 7, which is why I am up so early this morning. i have 2 days of work then turkey day!!!
If I am missing, it is because of that and I need to regroup before I even think of excercising again.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!!!
