Think to have her2 retest. Need help
I had lumpectomy in sep then had bmx on Oct 18th. Lumpectomy took a 3*2.8*2.5 cm tumor, found mucinous carcinoma mixed with DCIS. Margin had DCIS. BMX found multiple residual focal of mucinous carcinoma and extensive DCIS components (grade 2). They found on one slide 1.7*1.5 cm span of DCIS.
My Her2 status is stated for invasive carcinoma like this:
*Equivocal for her2/neu protein over expression
* positive for her2/neu gene over amplification.
I thought her2/neu protein and gene are related, what did these two statements mean? Am I definitely her2+ or not? Read Her2+ diagosis is related to protein.
Since mucinous carcinoma is my invasive part of cancer, and mucinous carcinoma is rarely her2+. If this diagnosis means I am her2+, I will call the surgeon's office to ask for re-test of her2, just to make sure so I can have approriate chemo treatment.
Also, no hormore receptor or her2 was tested on my DCIS components. I read these tests for DCIS is relatively new, should I ask for hormore test for those components too? Will they be different from the invasive part?
Also, both in lumpectomy and BMX, only grade was mentioned for DCIS, not for invasive mucinous carcinoma. I do not know why.
I have been reading a lot about her2+ lately and glad to know treatment options got much better in recent years and some doc actually hope the BC is in her2+ so there are more drugs available. But I just want to make sure I have the right diagnosis. I have been searching the whole board for people with mucinous and DCIS, so far found only one person was her2+, the others are all her-.
Please help. Any suggestion, wisdoms, opinions will be appreciated. I will fax some information to the surgeon's office tomorrow. he is a good general surgeon but he is not familiar with specification of some rare type of BC.
Thank you so much.

Just wondering if anybody with two kinds of tumors had both tumors tested for hormone receptor and her2 separately?

Meglove,
I can't answer your question. But I'll post to bump your question up the list.

I had 2 tumors.
Each was tested for all receptors individually (ER, PR and Her2). It turned out they were virtually identical except one was very slightly PR+ (< 5%), the other was totally PR-. Otherwise they were the same.

Hello ladies, thanks so much for the explanation. After read more about these two tests, I understand FISH is normally very reliable. The surgeon told me they already tested it several times so the result is accurate. So I am Her2+ for the invasive components. Not sure about DCIS. Guess that wont make any difference in my tx. The other things that bothers me is nowhere in the report were mentioned about grade of the invasive carcinoma. In both lumpectomy and BMX, grades were mentioned only for DCIS. Guess that is the first question I will ask Onc when I meet him/her.
Thanks again!!
