I am newly diagnosed with breast cancer. had my lumpectomy and axillary dissection done 2 weeks ago. have my radiation oncologists appt in 2 weeks. i know i will have chemo and radiation done. i want to have a hysterectomy to remove my ovaries to reduce my chances of recurrence. I realize I am young. My husband and I did discuss it thoroughly about the risks associated with pregnancy and /or keeping my ovaries. we are thinking about freezing eggs. But my question is, when is the 'right" time to have that hysterectomy done? my thought was after treatment, after chemo and radiation. am i right on this assumption? Thanks for the replies Innocent-Angel

    Hi Angel

I would talk to my oncologist seriously before having a hysterectomy or anything involving shutting down of the ovaries.. (Unless you are BRCA, I say this only because I am not positive for BRCA)

When I finshed chemo my oncologist brought up to me a trial he wanted to enroll me in that would give me a monthly shot to shut down my ovaries. I was ready to jump on board but when they tested me I was in official Chemopause (Still am and I was 35 at diagnosis) I chose not to have the shot on my own. I am only 35 - I didnt like the idea that a shot could permanently shut me down.

So we fast forward to now 15 months after I finished my last chemo. Since finishing chemo I have been having an issue with a CEA tumor marker rising - I have been sent for several scans but nothing is showing up. However because of my concern I asked the doctor just last week about whether I need to think about getting a hormone level again. I was thinking is it possible that my hormones have kicked back in but I am just not having a period because of the tamoxifen I am on? So I asked him if he thought I should go ahead and get the shot STUDY OR NOT and shut down my ovaries. His response to me was the studies are coming back that shutting down the ovaries is not as promising as they thought it would be. So you can see why I am bringing this up to you. I am wondering now if all of this extreme surgery will really help if shutting down the ovaries with a shot doesnt seem to be working. What does everyone else think?

Thank you so much for the informative reply! I will discuss it with my oncologist. my gyno told my er/pr receptors was 95% positive. So I have very high hormone receptors. This is why I am considering it. Thank you again! :)

im in the same boat im going to have my overies "shut down" see how well i deal with that then get them taken out ,im only having them shut down first just to see the side effects, coz god forbid i have been a crazy bitch thses past few months and my poor husband , poor thing.

all so they can just take about 95% of them and leave just a bit , so im thinking that might be a good idea too....as having them all taken increses your risk of bad bones and heart stress , oh joy...

but i have endometriosis as well so that should fix that too i hope.

    luck and love liz
