Red - mine is around there too. I have to lose probably around 25 pounds to get into the low 20's of percent body fat. That is a lot for me! I will weigh what I weighed when I finished high school! I just started tracking my calories at Livestrong.com myplate application. Its a handy tool.

Well if fat stores estrogen I'm in BIG trouble!! Just before I was dxed, I was "this close" to starting a very structured weight loss program. Fourteen years ago (it really doesn't seem like that long ago!?) I did a liquid diet (medically supervised - all very safe) and lost 92 pounds. Kept it off for quite a while and stayed in maintenance after my daughter was born. Then life got in the way and all that weight and more is back onboard. There is now a modified version that includes fruits & veggies and lean protein along with the shakes, with really great results. Since onco said no weight loss during chemo, I've had to put that plan on hold. I'm hoping to be able to start it no later than January - I'd really like 2011 to be my year of vitality!
-
Food - I was just keeping track today of my calories at that livestrong myplate website and before lunch I have used up half my day's supply! No wonder my weight has been slowly inching up on chemo, I eat more often because it keeps me from feeling nausous and that is more than I should be eating I guess. Food for thought!

please my sistas say a prayer for my grandson.he had a motorcycle accident this morning coming home from work.he is 23 yrs old.
thanks.
-
I guess my Onc. is even more conservitive. My body fat is 20.5, and he wants me down to 18. I'm working on it but it sure is hard.
-
kira - 18%? wow.
-
Grannydukes - I am sorry to hear about the motorcycle accident. My best wishes that your grandson is ok and recovers fully.
-
thanks for the livingstrong website. I am determined to come out of this bc healthier and in better shape than I went into it. I have been a fairly healthy eater, but eat too big a portions. Have been trying to work on that and make some healtier choices overall. While all my docs have been trying to decide on treatment I have been a mad woman with yoga and walking. Found out I do not have to have chemo so that will help alot. Don't know how radiation will effect my energy so I guess I will go with the flow when I start in a couple of weeks. I love all the info on nutruition that people have shared. Thanks to all for sharing.

Weightloss...I hear you there! I've got at least 40 pounds to lose...I lost 50 pounds about 2 years ago, and have kept it off, but couldn't keep it up to lose anymore...So, I"m in the same boat as some of you other ladies...I was told not to try and lose during chemo, so that is on hold for now, but something I have to do afterwards....maybe we can start something (a thread) to help keep each other in check...I dunno, just a thought. Either way...we can do it!
Granny...prayers being said for your grandson...please let us know how he is doing when you can!
Have a good day!
Tori

Grannydukes I hope your grandson recovers quickly.
According to what I have read yes if you are overweight and post menopause fat is your enemy when it comes to estrogen. Ironically I have read if you are pre menopausal and under 127lbs it actually increases your breast cancer risk. Oddly most of my life I have been well under 127lbs. Only around 129lbs now but I'm pretty sure I'm in chemopause now so as long as I can maintain I'm good.
So how do I keep thin. Some it must be good genes I'm sure. But when I was younger it was easier. Once I got into my mid 40's it was a bit more challenging. There is no trick. Eat smaller portions. Eat mostly vegetables. I eat very few carbs and when I do I try to make them high fiber. Eat more fish. I will eat red meat on occasion but small amounts and never more than once a week. When I do eat cheese I eat low fat cheeses like feta or goat. I don't drink alcohol much. And of course I exercise.
I was 139lbs last winter. It was a lot of work to take it off. Took me 7 months. It's much easier to maintain than to lose.
Snacks: carrots, air popped popcorn, no sugar popsicles (15 calories a piece), red peppers are great but expensive. I try not to eat to much preprepared stuff but pickles are low calorie (but high salt). There are sweet pickles on the shelves that say no sugar addded that are 0 calories too but can be hard to find.
For those of you looking at the alkaline diet check this out: http://www.rense.com/1.mpicons/acidalka.htm

Does anyone know if there is a way to measure whether tamoxifen or AI's are working well?
-
Prayers for GD's GS. And big {{{HUGS}}} for Diane's brave GS!
-
Omaz: I do hear if you are getting side effects there is a good chance the estrogen is being blocked etc. As far as measuring the effect of keeping the cancer at bay… only measure is if you get mets… then it's not working. If you don't get mets then it is either working or maybe you were ok anyway.
If you have mets then I do believe than can measure… if the tumor shrinks or your become NED then it's working.

Hi All! I love this place! I especially love this thread--my little subgroup.
I had a masectomy, chemo (microscopic cells in one node), and tram flap reconstruction in the year 2000. Well, here we go again. I thought I was through with all this, really did.
My normal screening breast mri, which had a few "lit up" areas, prompted an ultrasound and second mammo of this year (neither of which showed anything), I had an mri-assisted biopsy. One area was benign and another showed DCIS. The radiologist called last night and advised me to contact my oncologist this morning. As my luck would have it, this is her day off. I am so glad you all are here. Reading this message board has kept me calm. I hate waiting!
the journey begins . . .
-
jorja - Is it the other breast? So sorry!
-
jorja- how comes it came back, ya is it the other breast, and same patholgy as before
-
Aw Jorja! I so hate hearing that! You are right about this thread. We have a tremendous group of very supportive folks. I am holding your cyber hand while you wait!
