DCIS and HRT

Hi everyone.  I am visiting my gyno on Wednesday because last week I started my period on day 17 - I never start in the middle of my cycle so he's wanting me to come in (he wasn't in town last week hence why I'm going this week).  I am one year out of my BMX (had DIEP but one flap did not take so one side is implant and the other is DIEP) and doing fabulous - thank God!  I was told because mine was DCIS and there was no invasive cells found AND I chose a BMX that I did not have to do Tamaxofin - exactly what I was going to tell the oncologist anyway b/c the risk of endometrial cancer or cancer of the uterus was higher than recurrance of BC.

Well now I'm not sure what's going on with my cycle - I was bleeding heavy for 2 days.  I have a history of endometreosis - dx at 14, I'm 41 now.  I've never had children and now won't be able to so I want to have a full hysterectomy which would include my ovaries.  Since I'm still pre-menopausal - I can't do HRT per my breast surgeon - but what about estrogel?   I could just have the uterus removed but with endometreosis - as long as I'm producing estrogen from my ovaries - if it's outside of my uterus then it will continue to grow.  So I was considering having the abilation (sp) instead of removing everything just yet and not having to do HRT and stop my periods.

Has anyone had the same situation I'm in and used estrogel or had the abilation?  Any help and recommendations is GREATLY appreciated.  You ladies are a wealth of knowledge and I must say I trust you sometimes more than the docs.

Thank you and God bless you all!!

All I can say is, if it were me, I would absolutely do an ablation first... definitely skip HRT (which is linked with breast cancer and that's the last thing we need as DCIS survivors!!) and I would definitely only remove uterus/ovaries as a very last resort... since removing them is irreversible and can cause more hormonal problems than they solve.

I'm not familiar with estrogel, but you may want to check the alternative/complementary forum where there are some great discussions on bioidentical hormone replacement and natural progesterone cream which may be helpful.

Thanks Julia - I appreciate your reply.  I'm going to shoot for the ablation and if he doesn't want to do it then I'll go find another doctor who will.  I'm tired of the awful cramps and heavy bleeding I have - when I was on BCP I was fine b/c it was controlled but now that I can't take them I don't want to have heavy periods.  I went 22 years on BCP and it was great but now I believe that they and the fertility meds/shots I took to get pregnant caused my cancer to speed up - I think I was predestined as my maternal grandmother and aunt both had bi-lateral BC.

Thanks again - I'll go check out the alternative forum for some feedback.  I will be asking about all the topical creams/gels as well as they don't seem as so intense as taking by mouth or shot.

    All the best!

    Kim
