for those on a DIM protocol

Options

are you doing it on your own or under a doctor's supervision?  if under a doctor's supervision, is it your PCP, a naturopath, or ___??

i've got a lot of questions regarding this treatment.  is your blood check and if so for what?  are you taking supplements to help with any side effects?  what dose do you take?  (if under a doctor's care vs. taking it on your own).  how does your onc feel about it or is he even in the loop?

how long have you taken it?  how long are you planning on taking it, i.e., five years like an AI?

boy i'm just chock full of questions this today aren't i?  lol

thanks in advance!

PiscesMoon, there you go again, starting yet another interesting topic - will you never abate? Smile

I'm afraid I don't know the answers. I thought DIM was a supplement. Let's see what the others have to say....

    Pisces Moon,

I am taking DIM/I3C under a doctor's supervison, who is also a bio-identical hormone specialist. I also have a PCP, who also knows exacty what I take. My oncologist didn't ever seem interested in anything like this so I stopped discussing these types of things with her.

I have taken this this for about two years and have a blood test yearly to check my estrogen metabolites. There are no side effects. DIM/I3C simply processes estrogen down non-carcinigenic metabolite pathways.

I am not sure how long my doctor would like me to take it. I think you can take it for as long as you want to. I especially need to take it because a blood test taken 6 months after I was diagnosed with DCIS in 2007 showed I was very estrogen dominant.

If you think of any more questions feel free to ask away or send me a PM.

    I love a  questioning mind,

    Sandie

I take DIM and other supplements under the supervision of a nutritional biochemist (with the knowledge and agreement of my PCP). The metabolization of the estrogen is monitored by a test every 6 months.

    Specific DIM Warnings and Precautions

Warnings and precautions to be aware of concerning the safety of DIM include the following:

    • DIM is usually considered to be safe when consumed through foods in normal dietary amounts. However, this does not mean that it is safe for medicinal use (usually at much higher doses than found in foods).
    • It is often claimed that DIM can prevent cancer, and DIM is currently being studied for such use. However, some studies have shown conflicting results, and there is some concern that DIM could actually stimulate the growth of cancer cells. If you currently have cancer (or if you have had cancer in the past), you should not take DIM without your healthcare provider's approval and supervision.
    • The liver and kidneys help clear many medications and supplements from the body. It is not known if DIM is safe for people with kidney or liver problems.

julie - i believe that i read about the warnings in some earlier articles.  i haven't been able to find anything really recent on it other than second stage clinical trials with this supplement.  that's why i wonder if people are taking it under a doctors supervision or a nutritionists guidance.
