2005 ROCK-TOBER CHEMO GIRLS

Jane,
You will get better. Take deep breaths and imagine the headaches and pains going away. If this doesn't work take some Vicodin. This was the only thing that made my aches go away. Hope this works for you too. -
Gracie,
Good luck tomorrow! I hope our symptoms lessen with each treatment! Afterall, that is possible, right? My hubby keeps reminding me...we're getting those freaking bad cells out of us. Hope the panic subsides somewhat for you. Hang in there. Let me know how it goes. -
I agree with MrsBee - whatever edge we can get on this monster, we should take it. I'm gray area too - 1.6 cm, but I ask my oncologist if it were his mother (I'm 52)or wife, what would he recommend. He said chemo. End of story for me. Chemo is do-able - not fun, but I definitly feel I'm really attacking this thing. I don't EVER want to hear the words "you have a lump and it's cancer" again.
God Bless.
Lynn

Glad you posted - I felt awful after my second dose - much worse than the first time around - the fatigue was much worse. I'm in my second week of second dose and feeling better though. Stay strong!!!

Hi ladies, I am in this group, too. An exclusive club that we wish we didn't have to join! I am a single mom or a 4 year old ---- and working full time like some of you.
I am going to get my 2nd round of chemo tomorrow. I am hoping I will have enough energy to take my daughter out Trick or Treating. Last time, 3 weeks ago, I was ok for a few hours afterwards. I never did get sick, just tired, had a lot of 'heart burn' and a minor sore throat.
I cut my hair real short last week and about ready to shave it off. Its really falling out. I feel like a dog who is shedding. But I have hats and 2 wigs. One of the wigs looks cute and I can't stand the other one I bought now.
So, after tomorrow, 2 rounds done, 2 rounds to go and then on to Herceptin and Taxol.
I have read many of the pages for the October gals but not all 19 pages!! I am so happy that you girls are so supportive and honest about what you are going thru, I hope I can add support to you, too. Thanks for being here. -
So mant posts to catch up with!
I was sent home from hospital with a pack - one of th ethings was a mouth wash called DIFFLAM ORAL RINSE ( for the tec minded it contains Benzydamine hydrochloride!) This kind of numbs things. I have only had what felt like an unlcer but it saw it off in 24hrs.
The hair - i kept mine until it started coming out and i obviously wasnt going to keep it. When i could pull it out i got my husband to shave it off -that was day 14. I thought it was going to be more depressing watching it gradually happen and looking like a hamster with mange! Yes i cried while he was doing it but know it feels fine.
We did a sponsored walk yesterday and it rained like only Britain knows how. Halfway around my scarf was so wet and cold that i took it off and walked bare headed - something i couldnt imagine when i shaved it off only 2 days ago.
Hope it helps

Heading out for chemo #1. I will think of all the angels on this site. I will suck on popsicles. I will read Louise Hayes' You Can Heal Your Life. I will tell my husband all about those chemo cowboys kicking cancer butt for me. I am psyched!
Anna -
I too started with a diagnosis of DCIS but it changed to IDC .9, grade 3, trace E+, HER-2+++. Oncologist said I could do radiation only, or go full bore. She also said if she were in my position, she would opt for everything possible, since they only get one chance to wipe it out completely vs. manager it. So, I'm going for it and if I were in my 30's, 40's instead of 57, that could mean so many years of great quality life.
When you run your hand (or someone else's) down the back of your head, it feel so GREAT. Its so soft and velvety. I haven't put my wig on yet (day 5) and the reaction is positive (although someone at the hospital called me "mister".)
Thinking of you all this week and how we're pushing through this, one moment at a time.
Nancy -
AnnaM, I thought you said your chemo was being delayed? Well, for you, I am glad you are getting on with it!! The sooner you start, the sooner you are done with treatment!!
I am off to chemo right after lunch. I have my "chemo bag" all ready. Last time when I was there, I had wished I had my daughter's diaper bag from when she was little. Well, now those Gucci and Prada "diaper" bags my Dad spent too much money on are going to get a second life. I've got cd's, Walkman, a book, magazine, blanket and water.
A friend of mine sent me a CD with bioryhthms on it, so I should be able to relax. Another made a CD with soft music, much of it Indian flute music....the songs are supposed to induce feelings of wellness, healing and health. At least I will be thinking of the chemo now as a cleanser, healer and 'chemo-kickin' cowboys'!! -
Welcome terynsmom!
We will take the support from you, too! Welcome to the OCP's - a truly great group of women with an unfortunate disease in common.
We have each other to hang on to - and great support for each other. Welcome to you! -
I got one of those headbands, too. My hair hasn't fallen out yet, but it will and I'm ready. A woman I work with is using the band with a wig, and she really likes it, thought it was money well spent.
-
I'm using a mouthwash called Biotene 4-5 times a day. I've only had one round of AC, so it's hard to say if it will prevent problems. Can't hurt, though.
-
Welcome! Lots of support and great suggestions here. Good luck on your first chemo. I thought the process itself (getting the stuff in your veins) was no big deal. The first things they gave me were medicines to deal with nausea.
-
Thanks for everyone's positive thoughts and comments. I'm feeling a bit better today, although still a little queezy. I've been doing little chores off and on during the day, so I guess that's progress.
I've also been trying to eat small amounts of food every couple of hours and that seems to help as well.
Happy Halloween Everyone!
Jane -
Tracy - did they prescribe any ativan? Not only does it help my nausea, it helps with the anxiety and not sleeping.
Lynn -
Yep! I have Ativan and it is helping alot! I am on day 4 after Treatment #1--no naseua and feeling pretty much back to normal. Tomorrow will be my last day with the oral steroids until next time. I have also cut out the Ativan except to sleep. I wonder how long I should continue the Compazine? Maybe I can try without and take it if I get queasy??? any words of wisdom???
-
Yesterday was chemo #!. I thought of all of you. I sucked on my three fruit popsicles during the A. I didn't have time to read my book because there was too much talking to do. The nurse was fun and very very helpful. He answered every single question I had, and I sure didn't hold back (thank you for the encouragement, Amy). Since it was Halloween there were treats and goodies at the nurse's station right across from my room, and my husband kept bringing me Fritos. (Can you believe I have never before tasted a Frito! Yum!) I had been so worried about the port, but it worked fine. My red blood count was already low before we started (32%), so the nurse said the doctor will probably put me on Procrit. I got Decadron and Aloxi through the drip, A, then C, and came home with Compazine and Ativan, but haven't had to take them yet. I have two more days of Emend. I did take an Extra Strength Tylenol, because I had a headache when we got home. I listened to my new guided imagery tape (Belleruth Naparstek: Chemotherapy) and that really put me in a wonderful zone. I will listen to it as often as I can during the coming days. I feel really good this morning but keep waiting for the other shoe to fall. I think I will stay close to home.
Amy: you are so very right when you say that the uncertainty about how your body will react is the worst. How are you doing today? I have never downloaded from itunes, but will try. After all, with a Mac it shouldn't be that hard, right? A friend gave me Olivia Newton Johns' CD and I had to stop listening to it right after track 2 because it put me in a very soppy state.
Terynsmom: no, I wasn't the one whose chemo got delayed. You and I are on the same regimen, I believe, A/C x 4 @ 3 weeks, followed by 12 weeks of Taxol and Herceptin, right? Then Herceptin for, well, pretty long, I guess. If I am right we'll get some hair back in April. I am getting my head shaved down to the velcro mark this Friday. The way I figure it is this: no more bad hair days for a good long time. Then again, my worst hair days are in the summer, so I'll be back in place for that.
Hanging in here,
Anna -
Good luck on your chemo, Anna. I started mine a week ago and felt pretty good... By the end of the week the fatigue set in but I walk every day for at least an hour (often more throughout the day) and that has really helped me lift the energy level. Only one morning of nausea after a week went by but it lasted a short time and I was fine.
I think it's all in the attitude and a bit on how one's body takes the menacing stuff. DRINK, DRINK DRINK!!! I found that broths are helpful and a bit of herbal tea, some cranberry juice in water... I can't seem to drink water anymore...wonder if others have this problem.
In less than a week I'm off to adventure #2 chemo!!! Only 7 more to go!!!!!
ravdeb -
hi ladies,
well, i'm 5 days out of my 2nd chemo...so far so good. i felt fine all weekend and even went out a bit with my husband just to get out of the house.
so, i'm crossing my fingers that i don't have the icky steroid withdrawal that i did last time...my doctor weaned me off this time, so hopefully it's not too bad.
all hair is definitely coming out...i realized today that i hadn't shaved my armpits in 5 days and there is not any stubble...it's actually kinda cool. my eyebrows are thinner though and that makes me sad.
is anyone having dizziness though a couple of days after chemo? everytime i close my eyes, i have the spins. i can't stand it. i don;t know if it's the decadron or what. anyone else dizzy?
-amy -
Yes, Amy, I feel dizzy right this minute and have since after breakfast. I got Decadron in the drip, no pills or anything. It's the kind of dizzy where I want to be up and about, it's definitely worse when I close my eyes.
Thanks for the tip, Ravdeb, I am going to see what I can do about rustling up some broth, that sounds real good.
Anna -
Anna, that's right! We have the same the treatment planned. I have heard that the herceptin won't make us so tired. And like you said, our hair will grow back. Glad I have someone to hold hands with for at least the next year and a half! We'll be strong together with all the other OCPs.
-----
Ake, no dizziness for me...just waves of my tummy doing summersaults but not sick. Minor headaches that last for a short time. Not hungry in the least. I ate but it was a waste, I couldn't tell if it was mush --- and it was a nice salad .. Oh well. -
Hi, everyone;
Today is day 5 after 1st A/C on Thursday, 10/27. 2 days off steroids. No nausea, but low-grade ache in stomach is constant. Doesn't quite rise to the level of pain, but definitely uncomfortable. Spread around my back also. Using heating pad helps, as well as Tylenol or ibuprofen. Keeping food or drink in stomach also offers some relief, although my appetite is way off. Find I'm feeling full on much less food than previously. If I didn't know better I would say my gall bladder disease is back, but they took that out 8 years ago so I do believe this is the manifestation of chemo for me. I am back at work, although moving more slowly. Even though I am functional, the ache is tiring. Mouth is starting to tingle and bother me. Keeping lots of balm on my lips and ice in mouth. But, I've had to stop the ice for the last few hours. Going to get a port place in my chest in about 90 minutes. I work here at the hospital where I am getting my treatment so I'm working until lunch, then going to get the port, and then my husband, who works just down the corridor from the clinic, will pick me up and take me home. Hope to just sleep for the remainder of the day and evening. Finding my emotional reserves kind of low today. I suppose that is how it will go for a while. Good days and bad days.
Keep sharing your stories and experience. I am learning and interested in everyone. -
I have that same low-grade gut ache one week after chemo. It's getting a little better, though. I started to get mouth sores, and hit the Biotene mouthwash with a vengence! The sores are not as bad this morning. My mistake was not taking the Biotene to work to use every few hours. Whew, this takes a lot of energy just to figure out how to get through the day! Well make it, though.

And here I thought I was sooooo ready for the hair loss. Guess what?I'm not...it atarted combing out today...I have a temp of 102.5, and a sore throat for which my GP has swabbed now, given me an antibiotic and this morning Diflucan because the antibiotic may produce a fungal infection I have done nothing but cry all morning...I give up....
kate -
Yesterday was my chemo and I called in 'sick' to work this morning. My boss said, "Maybe you should just take Monday and Tuesday off work next time instead of Sunday and Monday."
I wanted to scream but instead said, "I have no day care for Sunday and besides, I go for labs on Sunday before work."
What an insensitive remark!! He's lucky I don't call in sick for several days! -
Should you call your oncologist? I'm suppossed to call mine if I have a fever over 100.5. Nothing against your GP, but this is complicated stuff.
Yeah, I think I'm ready for the hair loss, but I may not be as prepared as I think!
Don't give up--not allowed! I know you aren't going to, but who doesn't feel like giving up at times? -
Well, he can go f___ himself!
-
Ditto on terynsmom's boss!! I just wanna hit him on the head with a 2x4 of education in BC!!!!
