I hate breast cancer month

And my reason for hating it at this moment is that Newsday ran an article yesterday about DCIS with the tantalizing headline, Debate continues on breast ductal carcinoma in situ. After trying to figure out a way to access this without subscribing, I gave up, emailed a friend who lives in Long Island who may or may not be able to get me the text tonight.

 I'm sure it's not going to be anything earth-shattering, but I'd certainly like to know why the lead of the story is a woman who had a double mastectomy six years ago. And I'd really like to know why, during breast cancer awareness month, Newsday decided to taunt women with breast cancer who might like to just find out something to share with friends, family or doctors as they suffer through this miserable condition by trying to get them to subscribe just so they can read this one story? 

On second thought, I think I'll write them a bitter little note about All This. Thanks for reading my rant of the day.

    I am sorry you ran into this.  It does seem like its all about the money, doesn't it?  Whenever I can't imagine it could get worse as far as making money off something, it does.  Think KFC & the pink chicken buckets.  I guess I am feeling cynical today.

     I have a love-hate relationship with October BC Awareness Month, because like so many others, I went and had my first mammogram during awareness month -- it was 2008 -- and I was just a bit over 40. Had my routine/annual 2nd ever mammogram in Oct' 09, and that it when this awful bc ride began for me when micro-calcs were detected on a mammo.

    Kitchenwitch, I see you, too, are at the 1-yr. anniversary mark.

    So I hate reliving this anniversary but I also am so thankful that I did get the mammo. because had I waited until age 50 as many were suggesting, well . . . who knows, considering that there was micro-IDC detected as well.

    I feel so relieved to hear someone say this.  I wish it weren't in October.  It is a holiday month.  I just want to think about pumpkins and my kids.  I have to pass so much breast cancer stuff in every store.  Hard to keep from thinking about it.  I wish it was in August.  I walked into Big 5 and there was a huge BC display.  I made a sour face and the woman looked at me like I was a witch. If she only knew....I just wanted to think about the start of baseball and my boy.

As I guessed, nothing earth-shattering here but still interesting to read, and certainly interesting for how anything DCIS-related can pretty much throw me into a full-blown obsessive panic/rage.

    I have mixed feelings about Oct. as well as mine was caught on a mammogram Oct.2009. I went for a baseline at 38 since it was Breast Cancer Awareness plus I do not know all of my family history since my mom was adopted. So it does help in early detection I think because If it wasn't for all the hype last year I probably would not had gone and my cancer would not have been caught for another 2 years had I waited until I was 40. And on the other had I think it is PATHETIC for business to try and make a buck by claiming it is for a good cause when in actuality the cause only get pennies for every couple of bucks the business makes off us.PISSES ME OFF sorry! Before I buy anything pink related I ask whoever is selling it how much goes to breast cancer research and anything under 50% I do not buy.

    I completely agree with you, Meggy. We love Halloween in our family and I want October to continue to be about costumes and pumpkins and candy and normal stuff like that.

    Never imagined at this time a year ago that all of the pink BC hype stuff would actually pertain to me. I gave to the Am.Cancer Society before my diagnosis and will continue to give now/post-diagnosis, but I'm not a pink shirt spokesmodel type of person. It's a club I didn't ask to be in and I refuse to be cheery or want to discuss it beyond this board. I do love this board, though, it has been such a comfort to connect with others going through this.
