Chemo curls

Ladies, did your chemo curls stay?   I am 6 months post-chemo and it still looks like a bad home perm.   I am happy to be alive, just thought by now the tight curls would be gone.

Can I wear a 3/4 cap fall or are those meant for longer hair?   I really am over wigs - too hot wear I live.   Should I get my first haircut, will that help "smooth" the hair?

    Hi

I'm 2 years from finishing chemo and like you my hair resembled a bad 1970's perm when it came through.  Just as I was beginning to think that I would always look like that it started growing straight. That must have been about 14/15 months after chemo. I had my hair cut last week and 99% of the chemocurl went with it. At least I can blowdry it now and I feel more like me!

My hairdresser told me to grow my hair (just having it trimmed each time) thinking that the weight would pull it a little straighter. It did seem to work. When it was short the curls were like cork screws but were a lot softer when it was longer.

    Take care

    Mal

i have read several times that after about 18 months your hair goes back to normal - as far as curls/straightness, etc.  my hair came back more curly but as it is growing longer it is getting back to what i had pre-chemo other than the color - i am 17 months post chemo so i am on target w/ what the majority says.

I love my chemo curls and am now watching them start to straighten--I am about 18 months out of chemo--- I have been having my hair trimmed each month so it is still a little short-but the growing out process is beginning.... I am so sad that these curls are going away--I have really enjoyed them!!!

My hair started growing back when I was done with AC but starting Taxol.  By the time I was 6 months out from AC I needed a slight trim to even things up.  I never had curl but I had wave (which I loved).  It went away about 3-4 months and a few haircuts later.  So yes, getting  a trim might get rid of some of the early curl and help you see how the newest hair is growing out.

My hair was also solid white for the first several  months, which I loved... now is back to brown/gray, although WAY more gray than when I started all this!

There's a great thread on here called "Hair, Hair, Hair"! http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/69/topic/707348

My hair grew back in straight 5 months post-chemo, then turned drastically curly.  I LOVED the curls, they were SO soft.  Unfortunately, they didn't stay *sigh*.  I now have permed hair, and with Aromasin, hair is falling out, so I shampoo, heavily condition, leave-in condition, and don't comb, just scrunch (making sure in shower to kinda go thru with fingers, but not 'pulling' on the hair).   My bf's father used to LOVE to rub my post-chemo curls, as they were really soft.  I miss 'em...:(    (BTW:  Yes, I color my hair...lol)   ~juli

    Hi, Fearless,

My hair was stick-straight before chemo, and it is back to being stick-straight now.  But, I'm 2+ years post-chemo.  I think it took about 18 months to lose those chemo-curls -- I looked like Little Orphan Annie for way too long.

Unfortunately, neither trimming your hair nor letting it grow out longer will make the curls go away any faster.  Haircuts will take off the ends, which will take off the curls; and as it continues to grow out, you'll eventually have straight hair.

So, the answer to your question is, "Yes, ... usually."

I finished chemo a year ago this month and my tight curls are still hanging around.  Pre-cancer, I had wavy hair, but I would blow it out straight and use a flat iron.  If I try to do that now, it looks OK at best, but is so resistant.  It clearly does not WANT to be straight!  I do get complements on it, but I really would like my old hair back.  I just don't feel like ME!   I've had one cut, and coincidently, I'm having it cut tomorrow.  Basically so she can trim up the back to try to even it out with the sides.  I tend to tuck the hair behind my ears, but with the back too long, it appears mullet-like (gag)

So it looks like I may only have a few more months of the crazy curls!

I haven't read a lot about this yet since I am in the falling out phase.  But if I had brown gray hair before what color does it back?  White??

Omaz, it can come in any color - some women it is red, some white, some brunette...I am a natural brunette and it came in my natural color but with a little grey.

So the consensus seems to be that the kinky curls will go away around 12-18 months - cool!   Not a fan of this "bad perm" look Smile

I am currently undergoing A/C, and soon after its completion, I too am starting Taxol. Its nice to know that there is even a slight chance that my hair will start growing bk while undergoing Taxol. Just out of curiosity what stage cancer dis you have, and what type?

Nadine, I was stage IIA, IDC.   I did not do Taxol in my regimen, but I heard from many ladies that it does start to come in during Taxol.

Get a good haircut; if you can find a hairdresser who specializes in curly hair and/or has experience with post-chemo hair that is a plus. My chemo curls lasted a year and then BAM it was frizzy and after a good layered cut it was absolutely straight again. Very strange!

after my hair got to 2 inches i started getting baby trims every 8 weeks.  my stylist would just trim off 1/16" - the very ends of my hair.  it took months and months to cut out the chemo hair.  i miss the softness of my chemo hair.  i wonder if the blonde highlites is what is making my hair more course.  i do deep condition it 3x weekly.

Yes, at first the curls were round and soft - then after a few months they just got kind of frizzy and not so defined.   Guess I will get a trim...dont really want to use a flat iron, as those can be pretty damaging.

I'm a year from chemo and my hair reminds me of Shirley Temple! I've never had curls like this before-they are so hard to control and I have trouble straightening it because of my crappy LE arm. I'm starting chemo again next week and really hoping for non-grey, straight hair this time around :o)

Oh gosh, I am so envious that you have that much hair at 6 months! I'm 5 months post-Taxol and my hair isn't yet long enough to curl even if it WANTED to! I think the longest strands are only about 1". It used to be straight before, but now it seems to be a mix of some straight/some 'bendy' (more a wave than a curl, although again there's not enough length to any one strand for it to 'make a circle', LOL!). So I have no clue yet whether it's going to end up wavy, curly, or a mix of straight plus either of the above.

I'm still wearing my scarves, because IMHO if my hair isn't long enough to use a comb on, it isn't long enough to want to show to the world. :-)

As to color, I used to be 75% brown tones/25% grey; now it's 50/50 white-and-black which means overall impression grey. Not a fan, but even less a fan of coloring, so I'm just going to wait out the color change until it goes back to what it was. I'm hoping it starts doing that next summer which would be a year from Taxol-end, but I'm still on Herceptin until the spring which I'm sure is why the regrowth/regeneration rate is so slow. Reality is probably going to be (since Herceptin takes 5-6 months to completely clear the body after finishing treatment) that my hair won't start to revert back to its former state/color until early 2012.

I do notice that the gals who had faster "hair action" are often those who are HER2- and so I really do think Herceptin slows down the whole hair-recovery action.

Yes, it could be Herceptin related, but I don't really know (I am HER2-).  I am sure you will have a full head of hair, even if it takes a bit longer to come in ....
