HUGS, PRAYERS, GOOD WISHES FOR KIRA!
Just got a call from Kira -- she tripped on some stairs last night, landed on her LE hand (her dominant hand) and BROKE IT!
She's on her way to the orthopedic surgeon this morning after getting the x-rays that showed the fracture, and will likely not need surgery, but will need it in a cast. Her hand, meanwhile, is wildly swollen (no surprise there
) and every shade of bruised -- blue, purple, red, yellow. Not at all what you want for your LE hand.
Yikes!
Get well soon, Kira!

Kira...So sorry to hear about your accident. Sending prayers, ((((((HUGS)))))) and good wishes your way.

Kira,
Thinking of you and hoping for more than I might reasonably hope for! Best wishes!

Whoa. How will a cast work, on an LE hand? I sure hope the orthopod listens to her, when she tries to explain what's going on in there. Scary, indeed.
(Gentle hugs to Kira!)

Oh, no!!!!! Binney, thanks for the update and Kira, feel better soon!!!!
Enjoy painkillers and chocolate. You have to get something good out of something as crappy as a broken LE hand.
Heal up quickly so that you can come back on here and keep us straight - Binney can't do it all!
Love,Suzanne

Oh, my goodness! I hope the orthopedic dr. takes instruction well! I'm wondering about the cast part, too. Maybe there's a similar type of removable cast like the walking boot I had on my foot? Something removable would allow for wrapping, adjustments for increase/decrease in swelling as the injury heals, as well as fluctuations in LE. Such rotten, rotten luck!!! I hope you are feeling better soon.

Goodness, gracious! So sorry to hear about your accident Kira. I know this has to be very concerning not knowing how your LE will respond and trying to make the best treatment choices. I have every confidence in your ability to communicate with your medical team though and know you will be your own best advocate.
You might try getting your LE therapist involved also to help determine best LE maintenance strategy during the healing process. I'm sure you will have many helpful insights to share with us following this experience.
Best wishes and quick healing!

A good LE therapist is worth gold!
LindaLou, Kira did contact hers right away and -- the therapist showed up at her house this morning with home-made pumpkin muffins!
There's therapy, and then there's therapy, y'know?!

Feeling your pain Kira!
Let us know if there is anything we can do to help!
Lots of hugs and love!

What can I say? My very proper dad would save this expression for the biggest of calamities:
"gol' darn, drat"
Hardly seems sufficient for this business of yours, Kira.
Pumpkin muffins, chocolate, meds, internet shopping with your non-dominant hand..... whatever combination you want. Mix liberally and apply often.
Know that we are here and concerned and sending love. Maybe the power of all this swell love can be channeled into your hand -- and make a gen-u-ine difference.

I can't really type and am not supposed to write for 5 days--yes my LE hand is my dominant hand.
I broke it, because I had my laptop bag on my good shoulder...Tripped on a weird stair in the dark, coming out of a class.
I found I was as aggresive with my LE hand as I would be for one of my kids: demanded the correct xrays at the urgent visit (there are really only two kinds of fractures with the outstretched hand--navicular or colles, and I didn't have a colles) and pulled the doctor/breast cancer/ LE card and got in to see the top hand surgeon--and wrote LYMPHEDEMA across the chart.
I'm in a short arm fiberglass spica cast--the fellow thought he might just splint it, because my hand was so swollen and bruised. He says when the swelling goes down (I sure hope it does--my hand looked like a swollen eggplant) and the cast gets loose, we'll get another one in a week. Three weeks in the cast, and then the removable splint.
Polly came over with muffins and MLD (I love her!) and because my fingers are free, has me in a gauze wrap, doing proximal MLD. She told me to expect to swell when the cast comes off, and we'll deal with it.
I feel so STUPID for falling, and so horrifed that it was my left hand.
Polly was the first person I called.
I should stop typing--I called Binney at the crack of dawn, sobbing, so this is not easy at all.
And, my #$#ing office manager thinks I'll be in to see patients tomorrow.....Dream on.
I'll be mainly reading for a while.
Love,
Kira

((((((((((((((((((((Kira)))))))))))))))))))))
As much as I love seeing an update from you in person, "walk away from the laptop" because I know you'll be tempted to stay in-the-loop.

Praying for you also, Kira. What a rotten thing to happen. You wouldn't want to hear what my step-father would say in a calamity situation - your ears would ring for weeks and it would take as long for the blue air to clear. You are blessed to have such an incredible therapist - just where do you live again? any places to rent near her? Anyway, know that I am thinking of you, as likely are most swell sisters on this site. A good book is great therapy!
Blessings and lots and lots of hugs.

Kira,
So, so sorry sweetie ! Geez Gilda Radner was right! It's always something! Sounds like a lymphedema nightmare! Know I'll be thinking of you and wishing you nothing less than a speedy recovery! I''ve had two bad falls. One ended in a medial, lateral partial menisectomy, right knee, the other a broken upper tuberosity of the left shoulder right before diagnosis w/ marrow leakage medially and laterally. I know that feeling of feeling like I lost my graceful maneuverability and feeling dumb. It's just part of it! You'll get past it! And I know you'll take good care of yourself. Just wish you didn't have to! All my love ......... Doe

Dearest Kira.........I'm so sorry this has happened. What a flippin nightmare. Fingers, arms, toes, everything I've got are crossed that you are on the mend without LE giving you any extra grief.
If you need a note for work I'm sure amongst us we could certainly come up with something really convincing.
Gentle hugs and wishes for speedy healing.

Oh Kira,
Please add me to the very long list of admirers wishing you a speedy and full recovery. Hope your wonderful LE therapist can continue to work with you to reduce the swelling and speed the heeling. My heart goes out to you!
Gentle hugs,
Deb

(I want to know where I can find an LE therapist who will come to my house and bring muffins.)
Hugs again, from otter

Oh Kira........ SO SORRY!
-
Kira, I'm so sorry to hear about your arm. Awful! Your LE therapist sounds like a jewel. Wishing you a speedy and un-swell recovery.
-
Kira..I am so sorry to hear about your arm. I echo the other posts..what a jewel your LE therapist is..muffins and MLD! Sending you lots and lots of good thoughts and prayers for a speedy and "unswell" recovery. (yeah, unswell is not really a word but what the heck).
-
Kira - good for you for making sure you got proper care - what you did at the urgent care and after was wonderful - you know that provided an education for those folks, and perhaps will make it just a tad easier for the next LE patient who comes in with an injury to the LE limb. Once again you are helping others by what you do. Hugs and best to you for a quick and routine healing of this.
-
Just seeing this Kira. (((((HUGS))))) Hope that it all heals fast and the swelling goes down.
I woke up this morning with lots of swelling. So I pulled and tugged till I got my sleeve on. Not an easy task working with the arm-shoulder the chemo port was in. Thinking about letting my DH wrap me tonight. Getting along well otherwise from my surgery.
-
Abby, good for you! And you've been "de-ported" too, yes? Must feel like some kind of new freedom. Heal quick!
Binney -
Kira, I miss you and am hoping you're not in too much pain and that your arm is doing okay...can you get your husband or Binney to give us an update on how you're doing?
Love you!
Suzanne -
My thoughts and prayers are with you Kira xoxo
-
Praying that your arm is not doing any LE swelling and that the injury swelling is going down.
Gentel hugs.
-
Thank you for all the posts and healing wishes.
The pain is getting better, but there is swelling up around the knuckles. Polly talked to her partner in NYC and another patient broke her LE arm at Penn Station, and she's having the same issues: so Polly told me to keep it elevated, lots of MLD above and below.
Still needing to justify being out of work: but talked to a former officemate who was incensed that anyone would expect me in with one hand out of comission. And with the LE, I want to keep the swelling under control.
I expect there will be swelling to deal with: some LE and some just swelling (how do you tell??): and I'm still bruised front and back.
My fingers are behaving...
Feeling less like a moron with incredible bad luck and more luck a total Klutz.
I managed a shower this morning, all by myself: small victories.
Hugs and thanks
Kira
