All About Gummies

Try a Barely There bra. I bought one after my TE was put in. The molded cups are nice and there is no underwire to worry about.
Learned today that my local PS (in StL) plans to use a "high profile Style 20 silicone implant"--I'm guessing that means a "round silicone" that my first PS has warned me away from. I'm going to find out from PS #1, hopefully tomorrow, if a shaped saline might be preferred to a round silicone until I can get a 410 down the road. Thanks to everyone for helping me weight my options.
-
Gemini -- sorry you've had so much leg work to do with this! What a silly problem (really) -- why can't it all be simpler?? Style 20 Allergan's are really nice from what I've seen. Have you ever talked to Whippetmom in the Breast Implant Sizing 101 thread? She is a 'breast whisperer' and really can be helpful. If I remember right you said you had a bilateral MX... and from what I've seen the rounds can give a really nice look and it isn't THAT different from the gummies. Just a thought... for now. And yes, Jessica is a doll; very helpful. Sorry to hear that about the needing to be treated for other stuff there... I guess Claire must be within the 90 mile rule (that's a lot) though I can't imagine Jerusha is (at 5 hours away) but perhaps Jerusha also had oncology treatment there as well... anyway I guess not having that issue I just wasn't familiar with that rule.
I wish you luck in your decision! And a swift resolution of all the variables
Mantra -- swelling is relative and you have plenty of cleavage -- don't worry!!!!
-
Lilah, hi, I didn't have any treatment, but I had a consultation with another doc at MSKCC and the referral to the BS and PS came out of that. I am way over 90 miles away.
-
Yeah that's what I thought. Who knew there was a rule? Not I, certainly.
-
If I drove really fast, I'd be 90 min. away from Sloan, but in actuality it takes me about 2 1/2 hours. I take the car to New Haven, then Metro North to Grand Central, then I hike the 10 blocks to 53rd Street. I did that today for my pre-op. I'm just under 100 miles away.
I asked about switching from round to gummy and she said that because I was putting the TE back in and making a new pocket, it was no issue switching to the gummy.
I really love her. She is quiet and calm, and takes the time to answer "silly" questions. One thing they did was to take a chest xray. Is this common practice at a pre-op? Now I have to worry about the results...
The nicest thing is that my two sons live in NYC. We had an awesome dinner and I got to see where the youngest teaches.
-
Thanks Lilah, I'll try WhippetMom and really appreciate all of your wonderful insights along wtih the other ladies on the thread. Best of luck to all of you.
-
Claire -- yes chest x-ray is SOP for all surgery... you didn't have that when you had your surgery in CT? Also they do a bunch of other tests as a standard practice. I am thinking they do the chest x-ray to make sure all is clear there, since you are being put under anesthesia. (But if someone actually knows why they do it please tell us
That's just my guess.
And yay for the news that you can have a gummy if you want! I am so glad you like her and I agree about her way. Now if only she had the power to make me as tall and slim as she is
LOL
Aw how nice you got to see your sons!
Gemini -- you are welcome!
-
Claire-so happy for you! I'm glad your appointment went well and you can proceed to the gummy. The time will pass quickly and before you know you'll be all done and look as beautiful as ever, but of course your a beautiful personal already! So glad you got to see your sons. I'm really not a city person myself but my daughter loves NYC and wants me to take her there shopping before the end of the year.
-
Sweetie -- love the new pic!
Gemini -- it occurred to me as I woke up this morning (thinking of you! how do you like that?) that if you are not on the picture forum you should be. It's a private forum where we post pics of our foobs in progress (beginning to end)... it might help you decide what to do (to see a lot of different results). If you are interested, send a PM to Timtam here on this site and tell her I told you to contact her.

I wish we had more Canadians on here for input. My PS up here in Alberta has been using 410gummies for 10 years for his reconstruction cases (by the way, he has only had 1 rotate in the pocket in 10 years). I would think that if a large portion of his gummy girls were unhappy, he wouldn't use them. He didn't give me any other options, I'm sure if I said I didn't want them he would give me other options, but he felt these were the best for me. He did mention he likes gummies because they cut down on rippling quite a bit, and I have ripples with the TE's. There is not enough gummy ladies on here to get a true picture of how many are happy. I get my exchange on Dec 22nd so I guess I will find out in 2 months if I am one of the ladies that love them!
-
By the way, has anyone heard from Kay (Midnight Star)? She was set to get gummies in October I had thought, and I haven't seen any posts from her lately.....
-
Hi everyone....just a clarification...
The gals from Canada [Mantra and jillyG] might have a different degree of cohesiveness with their anatomicals. In Canada, plastic surgeons have access to the entire Allergan 410 and Mentor CPG line up, which means that they have access to the varying degrees of cohesivity, while in the U.S., we only have the "firm" version available for clinical trial purposes.
Perhaps it turns out that it is the same degree of firmness. I suppose we could compare catalog numbers. I would like to know someday.... I do know that Mentor's CPG version was intentionally created to be less rigid than their Allergan counterpart.
From an Allergan 410 Canadian webpage:
"Natrelle gel-filled Breast Implants provide varying degrees of softness and a range of cohesivity, from very soft to more firm, so your Implants can feel the way you want them to. "
http://www.natrelle.ca/410_rightFit.asp
Oh, and Mantra...I do predict a Nordstrom's bra addiction will almost certainly be in your very near future.
-
Wow Deborah -- I had no idea there were different degress of firmness within the Allergan 410 line. Good to know! That means when they do finally approve these babies in the US (which god knows out to be close) we can consider softer ones if we want. As it is, mine is firm but the firmness does not bother me. It's only slightly firmer than my real, remaining breast (I never had very soft breasts).
But on the link you sent they talk only about the 410s and the implication is that there are other "gel-filled" Natrelle silicone options...so wouldn't those be things like the Style 20? Is that also cohesive? Or do I misunderstand their use of the word "cohesive gel"?
Re: Mstar -- I think she was due for surgery this week... but has not said much for awhile.
-
Yes, they are referring to the Natrelle silicone rounds. As they state, all silicone implants are "cohesive" - but it is the Allergan 410 and its comrades which are "form-stable cohesive gel" implants. I am encouraged that you find your anatomicals soft enough!
-
I remember reading that portion on the Allergan site that discussed the different firmness/softness of their implants. I recall her handing me an Allergan 410 and a Allergan silcone for me to compare the difference. I honestly can't remember which one felt softer but actually they both felt way softer than my implants do. As I mentioned before, from the outside, they feel like I'm wearing a very padded bra. They also feel very spongy. I guess the muscle makes the difference between what they felt like out of the box compared to what they feel like in me. However, if they came with a lifetime supply of Restylane or Botox, I would grow to love them!! Whippet, I don't recall them listing which implants have the softness factor, do you? You'd think that would be an important part of what they wrote and I find it odd that I didn't see it.
Well, better head to bed very soon. One of my dogs is sick. He doesn't know this yet but I have to drop him off at the vet early AM so they can sedate than scope him. Right now he's sitting here happy and wagging his tail and I'm thinking . . . poor baby, you have no idea what your favourite vet is going to do to you tomorrow. Of course, I completely forgot that he'll find out tonight regardless. When I get into bed he comes into my office, hops up on the chair, reads the posts (and sometimes replies to them under my name). He's seems to have an unusual interest in the bras 101 thread.
-
Yeah Mantra, same here... I held a regular silicone and a gummy in my hand and the difference was not huge. That said, my PS did demonstrate for me how, when you hold each one up by one end... the regular silicone ripples and the gummy does not. So what you lose in softness you gain in better structure. That said, I also agree Mantra that it feels firmer IN the body and that has GOT to be because of the muscle that overlays the implant (regardless of which type you get).
-
Whipetmom, wow, I learned something new today, I had no idea that the Canadian PS's have access to different 410's. Thanks so much for letting us know that. I haven't talked to my PS about firmness yet....or size. We are waiting until my pre-op appt in Nov to finalize all the details.
-
Was reading that natrelle canada web site and it indicates there is 120 different combinations of height, width, projection and cohesivity for the 410's.
-
Lilah-thanks hon. I figured it was about time I put my pic up.
Ladies this dicussion about the 410's is very interesting to me. One of the reasons I opted against them was when I felt them I thought they were too firm for me. I know now I traded off firmness for ripples. I do like the rounds, but I do not like the ripples! If there is a 410 that is softer, say somewhere in the middle I would be very interested in that. It is good to know for the future should any changes be required or wanted. When I see my Dr at the next visit I will ask him about it and ask him if he thinks a gummy would take care of the ripples OR if ripples are a problem for me because of my thin skin. I don't hear many of you ladies complain about ripples so that is a huge plus for having gummies. One more comment regarding firmness, these rounds still feel pretty firm to me, I do think the muscle has a lot to do with the firmness factor.
-
I wonder if the range of firmness they talked about has to do with the entire Natrelle line. So the silicones would be softer and then the gummies would be harder. My PS never discussed with me the difference levels of firmness in the gummy line nor asked me to choose a gummy based on softness.
I have the Allergan 410 which I think is the true gummy. I really don't think that within the gummy line, the different products have difference firmness. Although, if they do, this could be a huge factor when trying to compare people's satisfaction or dissatisfaction with their gummies. I also wonder if the difference in the muscle itself plays a role since it covers the implant. Perhaps even skin types. So perhaps we are all having different experiences which is why some are happier with the results and others hate them. Have no idea . . . something to ponder.
-
Mantra - that is how I read that statement. They are referring to ALL Natrelle's which include the 410 (the gummy). There may be other non-410 Natrelle products that are less cohesive but therefore NOT gummies?
I also think you are right that different bodies will experience the implants differently.
-
Mantra and Lilah, my understanding is the same as yours. I don't know of any Canadian who has a 410 that is not "highly cohesive" and I certainly was not offered a choice of cohesiveness.
The Natrelle website is a bit misleading because within the section on the 410, they say "Natrelle gel-filled Breast Implants provide varying degrees of softness and a range of cohesivity, from very soft to more firm, so your Implants can feel the way you want them to". The implication from this is that the 410 comes in different levels of cohesiveness but in fact I believe that they are talking about the choices among all the Natrelle silicone implants.
The next point on their website says that "The greater cohesivity of the Natrelle 410 Breast Implant allows the distribution of the gel to be predictably controlled within the shell for a smoother look and feel" - so this suggests that the 410 in fact only comes in the "highly cohesive" model.
Also, in presenting the 12 models available for the 410, the product is described as follows:
The Natrelle HIGHLY COHESIVE SILICONE-FILLED BREAST IMPLANT
(Natrelle 410)and none of the 12 options say anything about a different level of cohesiveness. The difference in the 12 models is height and projection. Each of the 12 models comes in different sizes (ccs) and that covers off all 120 options of the 410. They all are highly cohesive.
http://www.natrelle.ca/410_rightFit.asp
Mantra, your comment about how your 410 feels - like you are "wearing a very padded bra" is a perfect description of how mine feels too.
-
jilly, I just had Allegen 410's put in, I can't remember which letter designation they were. I know that they are high & wide, I'm 5'10" & didn't want huge breasts, but to be a little bit fuller than I was. I do remember when we had our preop meeting, we talked about my expections & what I wanted the final outcome to be like, he showed me the different types of implants but we both felt that the 410's would be the best for me. My biggest request was for not having to wear a bra all the time & not looking like I had to.
I'm only 1 1/2 weeks out of exchange but I can tell you, so far, I'm thrilled. I hope it only gets better from here. You can PM me anytime to see how they are progressing.
Good luck! Dee

I was given this form that has two labels on it (one for each side) and I'm supposed to sign the form and send it off to Allergan. The form has the size, serial numbers etc and it looks like they are something peeled off the box. I haven't actually sent it in yet but when I do, I'll take a photo copy of it so I will have the information handy should I need it. It sort of reminds me of those thriller movies where they identify the victim by the serial number on her implants.
-
I got a card after my exchange that I carry in my wallet; has all the details (make/model) and a serial number for my implant.
-
I did receive a card with my TE but the Dr. didn't give me one after my exchange. I wonder if she forgot? I was just reading this registration form and it says "health Canada had mandated the inclusion of an implant registration with each of our silicone filled implants." etc etc.
Then it goes on to say that although the physician must complete and sign this form, it is optional for the patient as to whether they want to disclose their information. I guess my Dr. made the decision for me since my name, address etc is already on the form. I'll have to ask DH about this. He's the one that gave me the form when I woke in the hospital room that night.
-
Maybe it's to do with the differences between Canada and US... but the card, it seems to me, is necessary no matter where you are. I would ask the doctor about the card.
-
Lilah, I'm in Canada and I got that wallet card too (although I don't keep it in my wallet). Mantra, I received mine from my PS but she didn't hand it to me - it arrived in the mail a few weeks after my surgery, so maybe yours will be coming.
-
Hmm, maybe I'll get it after I fill in the registration form and send it to Allergan.
Edited to Add: Just noticed that the registration form gets mailed to the US. For some reason I thought they were manufactured in Canada but obviously not.

I have the mutated BRCA1 gene, therefore, I am having a bi-lateral mastectomy. I am in the early process of this ordeal. I'm overwhelmed by all the info., but am glad to have all this info. to help me make a list of questions for my PS.
As for the single ladies; don't worry about how your future boyfriend will feel about your breasts. My husband has always said he loves my breasts (even after I gained 30 lbs.) He is wonderfully supportive of this adventure I'm on. You too will find a mate that loves you for who you are and not for what you look like.
I've been with my husband for 34 years (dating 7 years and married 27 years) and I too sometimes worry about what he'll think. He always assures me that the person he loves is on the inside. I'm very fortunate to have him. When you find the right mate he will also look at who you are on the inside, not the outside.
Hugs for all of you.
