Arimidex, mouth sores, dental problems...
Has anyone developed mouth sores &/or dental issues while taking Arimidex? I have been on Arimidex for 3+ months and have recently developed mouths sores, dry mouth, and soreness of my jaw. Mouthwash helps temporarily. Any tips for handling these problems would be appreciated.

Sorry about your mouth sores..I did not take that drug but during chemo had to be cautious with getting mouth sores and mouth would get very very dry. I rinsed at least 3 times a day with Biotene Mouth Rinse (no alcohol). If I felt a mouth sore develope I would take a swig and it would literally disappear. Also, at one point my gums were killing me so I swished with some Glyoxide. Its like perioxide for your mouth. It will clear up any bacteria hanging on that is irritating your mouth. Docs can also prescribe something if the mouth sores are too painful.
Biotene and Glyoxide are available at drug stores.
Feel Better!

Hi mawhinney, I posted the same question back in June/July this year and got some great suggestions. I'm not sure how to get the link for you but if you do a search you will find the old thread. Hope this helps.
Peace, strength, love n hugs. chrissyb

Thanks for the replies. Dr. told me to stop taking Arimidex, which will take 3 weeks to get out of my system. Then I am going to try Femara. So far I've had negative reactions to Tamoxifen, Aromasin, & Arimidex!

mawhinney,
I developed mouth sores in late August after being on Arimidex for just over a year. I worry that the private pharmacy where I fill my prescription gave me the generic instead. It all came on so suddenly after I had my prescription refilled. Another factor might be that I burned the inside of my mouth on some very hot soup around that time. I was also drinking sparkling mineral water (not any more) in an effort to get my body to be more alkaline (as advised by a nutritionist.)
I never had a cold sore in my life, but now I have been dealing with painful areas along the insides of my upper and lower lips. They don't look like cold sores, they look like puffy areas and they burn. They vary in intensity--at times they are not so bad, but at one point my lips were very full, almost as though I had had fillers! Trout pout. Painful trout pout. The sore areas never form a scab or a crust. Even my tongue sometimes gets sore. I switched to Biotene toothpaste and I use zinc lozenges. I have seen a periodontist because my gums are sore. I start treatment this week. I started taking a B stress-complex vitamin which seems to have brought some improvement. Other than mild aches and stiffness, these are my first truly bothersome SEs from Arimdex. The sexual SEs are demoralizing, but manageable.
And just to keep things interesting, I recently came down with a case of shingles. Something could be going on with my immune system and I'm worried. I had a flu shot about a week before the shingles showed up.

I have been on Arimidex for over 4 years and have had several month long episodes of the exact symptoms as mawhinney. Strange painful areas in the mouth that are very sensitive and sore. Wonder how many others have this problem?

I have been on Arimidex for 7 years, have had lichen planus for the past 4 years. My Dr and I talked about getting off Arimidex now, I was in no hurry until I began to read about mouth sores on this site, I quit A yesterday, will update my progress as I go.

Since the topic is arimidex, I hope nobody will mind me ' going off' in another direction on this thread.
I am 54 and post-meno. The MO is planning on arimidex. I have no intention of taking it. I told her I had opsteopenia ( may be 'porosis' by now) and she said to get a bone scan, which I will do. She said unless it is " really bad' osteopsrosis , we will stick with it and add fosomax.
I dont think so! I told her I have already broken 3 bones. I am not doing anything whatsoever to accelerate my bone loss.Has anyone here started out with thin bones or osteopenia and gone on it ?
I have so many other health issues... I sure wish I had been healthier when I got this !!!!Any comments or suggestions?

Just started taking it a week ago. My mouth feels a little "raw". No sores. -
Update: Took Arimidex from Aug 2014 to June 2015. I felt 30 years older. My body hurt all the time. I stopped taking it for 8 weeks. Began to feel more energetic, enjoyed a whitewater rafting trip. Felt like myself again. Had a little scare as the tumor marker numbers went up from 0 to 41. The CT and bone scan showed no cancer. Moved over to Tamoxifen from August 2015 to present. Starting to enjoy being with my husband again and feel no real harsh effects from the tamoxifen.
I had to have my implants redone in September and that turned out well. Starting to feel like a woman again. -
Have been on Anastrozole for almost 3 weeks , now getting sores in my mouth like I did when I reacted to ciprofloxacin last year...mouth sores aren't really listed as a side effect that I could find...
