I  have just been diagnosed with cancer one month ago and have opted to just have a double mescectomy and to take herceptin for a year...it was found in just one lymph node...no more...so they don't think it actually spread...but i had a ct scan last night and am waiting on results...but i KNOW it isn't anywhere else. My question is is there anyone else out there that has only opted for the herceptin without radiation and chemo....and what were the side affects and how were they doing?

Hi, I had radiation after my lumpectomy surgery and now am taking herceptin alone every 3 weeks for a year.  I met with 3 oncologists before starting my treatment and was told that one dr. didn't recommend chemo, one insisted on the chemo because they were doing a trial and I met all the criteria and and the 3rd dr. said either options were very good and it was up to me.  I had 2cm. DCIS and a very small invasive cancer - 3 mm and the studies show that chemo is recommended for gals with invasive cancer 5 mm or larger.  Surgeon also did sentinel node biopsy which was negative, am taking arimidex because ER+.  I am 6 months into herceptin and luckily have no side effects.  If you go this route insist on yellow butterfly needle from the start because it is a smaller needle - I don't have a port.  Radiation was okay, I felt tired by the end of the day.  I work 9 to 5.  I met with 2 radiation oncologists and the first one recommended treatment for 16 treatments plus the 5 boosts - which is done in Canada laying on your stomach instead of your back - they give a higher dosage in a shorter amount of time.  So hopefully this answers some of your questions, any other questions let me know and good luck to you.  Good luck with CT results!

If it is in your lymph node I would be surprised if they didn't recommend radiation and chemo.
