Swollen Lymph Node in Groin. Any ideas??

Dear all

I was diagnosed with Basal Triple neg cancer in Sep 2009 in the UK. SNB was clear and then chemo started before the tumour was removed. Treatment stopped half way through after 4 rounds as MRI's did show that the chemo was not working. So lumpectomy on 4th Jan - clear margins. Radiotherapy ended in March 2010. My next 'check up' mammogram and meeting with surgeon etc is Jan 2011 (we have annual checks up here).

All well and good. then odd symptoms started. Feeling light headed / lack of coodrination at times. I trip up 3 to 4 times a day when I am teaching. Then, last weekend, I found a lump in my groin. I have NEVER had anything like this before. I contacted the hospital who think it's a simple 'infection' and it is 'highly unlikely' for BC to show up in the groin lymph nodes. They recommended I see my GP. I feel like a bit of a time waster to be honest but I arranged an appointment with my GP and saw him Tuesday morning.

He seemed very concerned and confirmed the swelling in my groin is a lymph node (same side as my BC). He said that there were no 'obvious' signs of any infection that could be causing it and that, given my BC and the fact the chemo didn't work, he was 'very concerned' and has now recommended I see an Oncologist ASAP.

So that's my story - has anyone had anything like this? Are the hospital right in that BC is UNLIKELY to show up in the lymph nodes in the groin?

Thank in anticipation for any help / advice you can offer,

Karen X

    Hi Karen,

I have a swollen lymph node in my groin and my oncologist said she has never seen breast cancer show up there.

    • Hi -- How scary.  Just a thought  - Are you very thin and, have you lost weight? After BC diagnosis, I "developed" LNs (on my BC side) that are not only palpable, but see-able, and have had various neurological-type symptoms. My docs say not to worry - that the groin LN are normal  LNs are obvious because I am very thin. My hunch is that I only noticed them after dx because of 1) increased vigilance, 2) weight loss made them more obvious; and 3) the groin LN are working harder to compensate for those that were removed. The neuro-ish symptoms I chock up to drug & treatment SE. Wishing you good luck.

    Hi KS1

No I'm not particulalry thin at all - probably at the top end of 'normal' weight. I noticed my groin lymph node because when I was getting a shower I felt a pain in my groin - then I found the lump. My groin aches a bit and if I press the lymph node, a pain shoots down my leg. My local doctor does not think it's an infection though and so has not given me antiobios. I am just waiting to hear from from the hospital.
