Newly Diagnosed

Hi, All.  I've been reading various posts on this wonderful website for the past few weeks.  I was dx'd with dcis w/microinvasion two and a half weeks ago.  I am fortunate that things have moved quickly for me, and I've met with two surgeons and have chosen the one I plan to use.  I found out yesterday that my dcis is strongly er/pr positive and her2 negative.  I also had a breast mri yesterday which identified no additional areas of concern.  Last stop before surgery is to meet with radiation oncologist to get blessing on lumpectomy w/radiation v. mast (which I honestly wouldn't mind).  I am young (43) with no history of bc, so this came as a bit of a shock (microcalcs seen on routine mammo).  So, my question is about timing of surgery.  I've been reading conflicting info about when the optimal time during the cycle is for breast surgery.  Seems like the older studies (from the 90s) talk about second half of the cycle as being best, but I've seen at least one study stating the opposite.  I am hoping for surgery on Nov. 1, which would be a few days before my period is scheduled to begin.  Thoughts?

    Namaste!

    Erin, I am so sorry you have had to join this sisterhood.  You have come to the right place for support and information.  I can't answer your question about what part of your cycle is best for surgery but someone will be along to help you here.  Take the time you need to make the best decision for you. With DCIS there is no need to rush. {{{Hugs}}}

    Hey Erin. It's Julie. I figured you would end up posting here, and glad you did. These ladies are the best. Glad you got your er/pr results. I don't know the answer to the timing of the cycle question, but thought I'd respond to bump your post back up! Hang in there.

    Hello,

    I had my second surgery on April fools day.  Guess what? My period started about 2 hrs before surgery as I was waiting to go into the operating room.  The doctor took me anyway and I did not have any side effects from it.  I don't know how your doctor feels about the time of your special time of the month so maybe its best to ask him/her?

    I have never heard that the timing of your menstrual cycle has anything to do with actual surgery, just on the imaging - but that doesn't mean it isn't significant in some way. And my first BS had me scheduled for an MRI without even asking about my cycle. When someone on here pointed out that this could be an issue, I rescheduled the test.

     I just had a re-excision last week and it was the second day of my period. Dont' know if that changed anything - and no one even commented on it, except that they made me wear this weird undergarment and a pad instead of a tampon during the surgery.
