Use of Oncotype

Does anyones oncologist NOT use oncotype dx in determining chemo. I have stage 1, node negetive but multifocal .3mm, .6mm and 1.7cm mostly lobular, little ductal. My local doc said chemo no matter what the oncotypes says and my doc in NYC says if oncotype is low, chemo will not respond and is not needed.

Do most doctors use oncotype? One doc said that lobular is usually low oncotype because it responds better to hormone therapy.

Any experience with this?

THanks,
Lola

I consulted with a few oncologists after my diagnosis (all in NYC, but different hospitals) and one did say he would do chemo no matter what, even though sentinel node was negative.  He didn't believe in the Oncotype test and said if it was up to him, he wouldn't even order it. The others all went by the test, which thankfully was low.

    Lola,

I go to MD Anderson and providing you meet the criteria is seems to be standard to offer the Oncotype test.

    Wishing you the best,

I went to 2 different oncologists after my cancer diagnosis and the first one did not believe in the validity of the oncotype test but said she would order it anyways if I wanted it. The second oncologist was a firm believer in the value of the oncotype test. I went with the second doctor. I figured if I was going to put my faith in the oncotype test, I should go with a doctor that believes in it as well. Got an oncotype score of 11, so...no chemo for me.

My score was 11 also, Mary, so I didn't have chemo either. My cancer is lobular, Lola, so maybe that had something to do with the score.  I don't know, but my oncologist at first said chemo until the test results came in. Grannydukes, I know the waiting is  hard and I was so nervous also.  I'll be praying for a low, low score for you too.

HI. I went for three opinions for both my surgeon and oncologist. All three oncologists said I was eligible to take the Oncotype test. Even my surgeon mentioned it - and this was three years ago. It seems to be standard practice at this point. HOpe this helps.

My BS wanted me to get the mammoprint, he thinks it's more accurate. My insurance only pays for the oncotype, so I got the oncotype. I've always wondered how the mammoprint one would have owrked out. Oh well, will never know.
