ok I am scared
about 3 weeks ago I was doing back kicks during a kickboxing class. The next day my but hurt and the pain radiated down my leg. My trainer said it was scitica.(sp) Anyway the pain eased up with a massage but its not totally gone. When I move around and exercise it goes away. When I sit down to work for a long period of time and then get up my back hurts on one side a bit. ( 2 on a scale of 1-10 of pain) so not terrible pain but its there. Once I get up and move around it goes away. When I exercise I feel no pain. When I sat in the car all day yesterday I had to massage my but ( right where the scitica nerve is) But now this morning my calf hurts justs a tiny bit above my knee. Can mets come and go? Do mets go the legs or scitica? My biggest fear is I have mets in my lower back and it's causing pressure on my scitica and causing the intermittent pain. The pain is very slight and has gotton better but it's been 3 weeks.
I am really scared. Please help~

Sciatica rarely responds to massage, and tends to get worse with activity. What you describe sounds like muscle pain. I'm thinking you pulled a muscle during your work out. Muscles tend to cramp up when not in use (as when sitting). Cramped muscles hurt. When you move around and warm up the muscle it relaxes and stops hurting.
The usual rule of thumb with a new pain is to wait and watch for 2 weeks. If it goes away or gets better, it probably not a met but something else. Met pain rarely goes away, and rarely gets better.
If you are worried call your PCP or your Med Onc and make an appointment to have the pain checked out. It's worth it for your peace of mine. I can understand why you are so scared.

I am obviously not a doctor, but my oncologists say that pain to worry about is pain that is consistent, persistent and worsening. Those words usually get me through the fear that I can hear in your post.
You could call your doctor and describe what is happening. Then they will tell you if you need to come in or give it more time.
I can tell you that every morning my left hip hurts but once I am up and moving it feels fine. I ran that by one of my docs once and they said I am getting older. BTW-my husband has the same thing and he has never had cancer.
I also understand your fear but it sounds like it comes and goes so does not follow my docs rules for worrying.

Pure, it sounds like you have pain that is in your pirformis and facets from the kick-boxing. When I get it it's also accompanied with pain in the sciatic nerve. Stretching is what helps. Keep stretching and try moist heat.

I really think it takes a while to get used to our "new normal" and what aches and pains we just have to live with. Do not underestimate what having no Estrogen has done to your body. My Onc described it as going from 40 to 70 overnight! And how many 70 year olds are running after small kids and doing kick-boxing?
I have a vague lower back ache that comes and goes, it's never gotten worse, it goes away after a few days, then comes back weeks later. It would totally freak me out at first (well, still does actually!), but now I think it is just a hangover from chemo, or maybe its the Arimidex, or that fact that I hit menopause at 42, or maybe I have always had it and I was never hyper-aware of it before.
I like Carols description of mets pain being consistent, persistant and worsening. I would imagine it is pain that doesn't go away when you are not thinking about it, that is there and present all the time. And getting worse.
BTW, do OTC pain meds help? When I am having an attack of canceritis, I do find if I take a couple of Tylenol, and the pain goes, I forget about it and stop obsessing (which always makes anything feel worse)

welcome to aging pure.

My onc has told me at least 100 times (I'm not tooooooo paranoid about any new pains!) that it does not get better, or go away. It becomes consistent and it worsens. Maybe you should take up knitting and forget the kickboxing!!!! Sounds like muscle to me, and the sciatica nerve can keep triggering off until the muscle pull is healed.

THIS IS THE EXACT PAIN I HAVE. I want to tell you I work out hard to and this happened to me 4 months after finishing chemo, same exact pain on one side and it went down the back of my butt and in my leg. It also feels like it is "pulling" across my groin, like tight. (does this happen with yours) It is definitely worse while sitting.
I was sure it was mets, it lasted 7 weeks and I was beside myself, finally had MRI (3 of them in hip, pelvis, lumbar) ALL FINE. That was a over a year ago, it finally healed and it returned over labor day this year. At first I was like here is that old pain again nothing to worry about, but then the fear and doubt grew. I am 5 weeks into the pain now and really believe it to be for those of us that have been through early menopause our joints don't move the way they used to and now they are injured easily.(especially if you work out a lot) I believe it to be Sciatica/Piriformis Syndrome and it needs stretching and PT.
Don't worry!!

Pure,
I used to have a 45 minute commute to work, and sciatic nerve pain. Mine was exactly as you described, radiating down my leg. Stretching helped, and not sitting too much. It went away when I changed jobs and got a shorter commute.

this stuff is just so darn hard. i am sorry you are in pain....and so scared. it is very scarey when your body has changed so much in such a short period of time/
i will tell you my body feels like crap most of the time...(but i am 58) but i continue to cycle and walk every day. i used to log on a calendar and describe my pains early after treatment because i always wanted to track my pains...to see if there was consistency and similar stuff going on. now, i don't but am more aware of my body more then ever.
if you are concerned...i say call your doctor. get it checked out. i think the first couple of years after treatment one is really hyperviligent about pain...etc. what has helped me is that i pretty much don't try to guess if it is cancer or not...or get too far ahead of myself with fear. it takes awhile to not panic everytime you have pain or something weird going on with your body. i am sorry you are feeling so scared. hang in there**

It's really helpful to have a friend who is a dancer. She usually has something hurting as well. For example, she can't wear something cinched around her waist as it will set off muslce spasms.
My guess is that you pulled something. I have had two really good shoulder pulls in the past three years (skiing). Nothing about breast cancer treatment was nearly as painful.
The fact that you really hurt following a day of back kicks supports this. But do get checked out.
One of the reasons I do weights on weekdays is that my neck kills me if I don't lift. So I need the muscle support. I cycle and ski because my body functions much better when I am exercised. So does my brain...in fact it doesn't work if I don't get out there.
Anyway, feel tons better. Hopefully, it is something minor you did and will go away quickly.
Reminder that I need to get out there today. Finally sunny (although I did catch some sun yesterday between showers). So much fun enjoying the fall scents and colors.

I know how worrying back pain can be. I have the same kind of lower back pain...is worse when I sit and better when I move about. It preceded my cancer diagnosis so I worried I already had undiagnosed mets especially since I didn't have a baseline scan at diagnosis. Then during my appendix/colon debacle, I had 4 CT scans and each showed no suspicious spots or changes to my lower back and spine. It confirmed for me what everyone here says...back pain, while sometimes really in your face and scarey, is unlikely to be mets if it comes and goes and changes up a lot.
That said, it's impossible (and unwise) to ignore anything that has the slightest possibility of being a recurrence/mets especially at stage 3. Hoping your back pain is better and, using your words to me, everything will be fine. I just feel it.
-
Pure, Sorry about your pain it the A**,
but relax , mets does not come and go, it's persistent and worsens.
Your pain sounds like a classic " injury"
-
Pure, I know I'm not on this board anymore but I wanted to say. Its probably nothing but just call your doc and let them know. Getting it checked is much better than letting it worry you to death. It sounds like you pulled something or just hurt yourself, just let your doc know so he/she can ease your mind.

I'm not a doctor but you may have strained a disc in your back. Your pain is very similar to what I experience several years ago, hubby is now having a similar problem. With mine I could stand, walk & lie down no problem, but sitting was uncomforatble. Hubby could sit but not walk or lie down. We both have had steriod injections in the disc to relieve the nerve. Since you were doing some trenuous exercise may have aggravated a nerve. But it is better to be safe than sorry, so I would get it checked out.
Sending love & prayers. NJ

thanks everyone:) I took some advil and the pain went away so I am hoping that is good sign:)
I was doing so good for so long then this started! But thanks again for your help and feedback. I have an appt next week and will tell the doctor.

Not Stage III (don't mean to intrude) but I have a long-term relationship with my sciatic nerve acting up. When it flares up really bad ... it literally hurts to the soles of my feet and walking becomes difficult.
-
Hi Pure,
My sciatica sounds exactly like yours.
I have a simple exercise for sciatica - cross your legs and touch your toes (slowly and relax) - you should feel a gentle tug - repeat with the other foot in front.
If the pain is from your pirformus muscle - try sitting on a chair with one ankle over the other knee (like the way men sit) and slowly, gently bend forward. You should get a gentle tug. - repeat with the other foot.
These are good exercises to do regularly - they shouldn't hurt - my experience is they always help.
-
Thanks Molly I will try that.
Chevfan-thank you as well! I don't care what stage you are:) I just want my a_ _ t o stop hurting so all adivce is appreciated.
I did take some advil and have no pain now so I guess that is good!

Pure,
I used to get that same pain when I would run, and it would scare the crap out of me! It is weird how we are different after diagnosis and treatment, and we really do hone in on everything. I run, I walk hills on the treadmill, and I use the elliptical, and these kinds of aches and pains come and go. You are doing great! Keep up the physical activity and don't worry about it unless it's consistent and persistent!
Love
Bobbie

I tend to irritate my ITB band when I exercise. Causes issues from hip down to my calf. A friend of mine who is a massage therapist finds the trigger points and works on them. HURTS like h***, but within a day it's easing up.
Hugs!!

I'm not Stage III, but hope it's okay to weigh in. I've also been told it probably isn't cancer unless it is persistent pain which doesn't decrease or disappear. This is helping me cope with the joint and muscle pain I have due to Femara. For months I was worrying about every little pain. I'm sure this was a normal reaction. Now, I try not to worry, but know I should ask my onc if I'm really concerned. It's a huge adjustment. If I have a cold, I'm wondering if my lung mets are progressing, if a headache, have the mets gone to my brain. But, ailments which strike those without BC also strike us. Hope you are feeling better.
Hugs,
Lane

Thanks..Each day this week the pain got better. Yesterday my butt hurt but I massaged it out. ( I had a knot) today nothing at all. I am assuming you can't get mets to your butt and also the fact its gone is all good:)

I had a nerniated disk about 10 years ago. Pain in the butt and down the leg into my foot. My big toe hurt so bad I thought I was gonna go crazy! I could work all day but at night when I would sit down, the pain was worse in my leg. At that time, I knew nothing about ruptured disc problems but mine was the classic case. It took awhile but it finally healed without surgery. My doctor told me sitting was the worst thing for it.
This year, after my mx, I slept in a recliner for about 7 weeks because I could not get comfortable in bed. I started feeling the tell-tale sign of aching in the back of my leg. Went to the surgeon concerned about a blood clot, so they did an ultrasound of my leg. No clot. I started remembering that the feeling was just like the sciatic pain from 10 years ago, but nowhere near as severe. Went to my family doctor. This time, it was not herniated (ruptured) but just a bulging disc which is actually pretty common. I went for some phyical therapy which helped a lot. A couple of exercises they gave me to try and push the disc back toward the spine and quit bulging outward.
1. Lay on the bed on your belly. Push yourself up with both arms straight, keeping your belly and legs flat on the bed, arching your back. Then, lower yourself back down and repeat 10 times. On the last two times, I was supposed to do it and then while I held myself in that position, I was to exhale completely. When you do this, you can really feel a difference in your back. Do it 3 or 4 times a day.
2. When you aren't home and can't conveniently lay down and do the exercise above, another one you can do is ---------- stand up and try and bend backwards as far as you can, keeping your hands on your hips or on the backs of your thighs. Then stand back up straight and repeat 10 times. 3 or 4 times per day.
Both of these exercises helped me tremendously. My sciatic pain went away although if I sit in the recliner for too long, I can kind of feel it. My physical therapist told me that sitting in a recliner is one of the worst things you can do for your back, especially if you have bulging disc/sciatic nerve problems.
Hope this info helps. My feeling from reading your symptoms is that your problem is more likely disc related than mets, but of course, I am not a doctor. Google "bulging disc and sciatic nerve" and you will get more info.
Hope you feel better soon.

Jen - glad to hear the pain is getting better. I just had a follow up with my onc and told him about some of my aches and pains that had scared me over the last few months and the tests my primary did to ease my worries. He reviewed them online (they are at the same facility). Then he reminded me that as a cancer patient it's hard not to think of recurrance with every ache and pain that we get. Like some of the others have said, he reminded me that if the pain continues to worsen and doesn't get better for two weeks, then it's time to have it checked out. I too also suffer with back pain, from an auto immune disorder and some disk problems and find that by gently stretching and moving the muscles help. In addition to a hot soak in the tub or the heating pad. (((hugs))) and hope that you continue to feel better.
