    $30,000 (????) "to help fund groundbreaking clinical and genetic research" (a direct quote from the email I received that linked to this ad).  Give me a break!  I've had outpatient bills that were more than that!  If you know how uber-pricey La Mer products are, it seems like donating a measly $30K and announcing it with a pink ad inviting donations from us is entirely self-serving, and I think I'm going to write and tell them how disappointing I find their gesture.   Deanna

    $30,000 dollars? I looked at it for myself. That's mearely a drop in the bucket. NO that's .0000001% of a drop in the bucket. That wouldn't have paid for the testing I went through in one week when I started out. Sickening!

    I went to the CLinique counter today to get some foundation.  They had pink ribbon charms to hang on your makeup container.  Really?

    What makeup container?....I gave up on that a long time ago, I am now a 'what you see is what you get' kinda gal!  Ok, so a couple Bare Minerals items - blush and lipstick but where would I hang a charm? 

    You will love this one...Mossy Oak - manufacturer of tons of hunting/sporting gear came out with a pink buck decal for the vehicle...I thought it was so ridiculous that I bought one last evening and stuck in on my Mercedes - NOT my truck.  It did not indicate that a donation would go to anyone on the package - I just couldn't resist.

    One of the ladies posted a pink handgun in the "I am Breast Cancer Girl" thread.

    The thing that kills me is that it's just so festive...fluffy pink ribbons, lots of fun merchandise, etc.  It makes me want to gag.  BC is NOT festive.

    Someone came in my office this a.m. eating yoplait yogurt and asking me about collecting the tops...it was all I could do to not be rude.

    I'm reading an awesome book about the whole pink thing - "Pink Ribbon Blues" that EnglishMajor recommended in a thread - it is really, really good.

    Lowrider, somehow I think that pink handgun and pink buck decal should really be together....

    Did anyone watch football this weekend with all the "pink" with the uniforms and staff?  DH said that the cost of all that new PINK the NFL could have made a great big fat donation instead, yup!

    no kidding!  Geez Louise - you can drink your pink (edit to add: seasonal edition) lemonade while eating chicken from a pink bucket riding in your pink airplane toting your pink gun and watching guys play football in pink uniforms... you know, I used to like pink...

    The NFL will be auctioning off all their "pink" stuff and ALL the proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society, so it's really a good thing.

    Does anyone say to themselves "Oh yeah, how much?" when a pink product says (as above) A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the fight against breast cancer  ?

    That kind of marketing (whether for BC or any other cause) just doesn't cut it with me.......it means zilch, IMHO.

    Let's not get carried away about all things pink because there is a difference between someone selling something "PINK" and someone selling something "BC RIBBON PINK". I just checked the Mossy Oak website and as of now none of their pink offerings are "BC Ribbon pink". What there are though, are MANY female hunters and that creates a market for pink, because like it or not, pink is always going to be associated with the female gender, and that has nothing to do with BC. Now as for those that adopt the 'BC Ribbon Pink" just to gain market shares in the month of October, yeah, I'm right there with ya'll on that!

    Good point, flynonanglwngs.  I got pretty excited about the pink shotguns and pink fishing tackle, until Mr. otter pointed out that those things have been in the catalog all year.  "They're pink because they're for girls!", he exclaimed.

    OTOH, these things keep popping up on my FB page.  Badger gave us one of the "Sisters Walk[ing] for the Cure."  Well, here's the other sister:

    Okay, ... let's see what we've got here.  See the cross-eyed look?  She's either nauseous, or on dexamethasone (Decadron) to reduce the SE's of her chemo drugs (or both).  My onco prescribed Ativan to help with all that.  Her hair?  It's a wig, I'll bet ... unless this was her first infusion and she hasn't lost her hair yet. (Mine looked exactly like that, 2 days before it all fell out.) Her wobbly posture is either from the Neulasta shot she got yesterday (bone pain), or the muscle aches from Taxotere.  Also note how she's placing her feet so uncomfortably.  That's a sign she's developed hand/foot syndrome, and will soon need to slip into some Crocs to save her poor, burned soles.  (Do you think she's lost her toenails yet?)

    Or, maybe that look of misery is due to the nagging aches and pains of Arimidex. (She looks the way I feel when I get out of bed in the morning.  Except I'm neither that young nor that cute.)

    Hey, at least she's trying to get some exercise, right?  Walkin' for the cure...  But, where's that sister of hers?

    Otter, I snorted and snorted over your doll post.  It is "prehysterical", as Deputy Dawg would say.

    The Bradford Exchange is all over the pinktober stuff, what with their cross-eyed doll and pink tree.

    They should offer a free prescription of tamoxifen with that doll.

    I went to the Bradford Exchage website to look for said pink tree (a pre-lit Christmas tree for $200) and found they have 106 items for "Breast Cancer Charity." 

    They do not specify where the money is going but proclaim, "Thanks to your support over the years, our companies have donated more than $750,000 to the ongoing search for a cure to breast cancer."

Proceeds go to the American Cancer Society.  "To me is that lasting impression everyday, every week, when someone drives through our city, they're gonna see a can that might make them get a check-up, and maybe save their life," Davis said.  Southaven is the first city in Mississippi to incorporate the pink containers, and has already received over 200 orders. Cascade Engineering of Grand Rapids is supplying the cans as part of its "Kick Cancer to the Curb" initiative."

    Get it?  Customers in participating communities can purchase the pink cans for five dollars... and the company that manufactures the cans will donate five dollars for each can purchased.  So, what, exactly, is going on here?  Is the manufacturer donating any money besides the extra $5 they collect from the customers?  No.  Is the refuse collector donating any money?  Apparently not.  Is the municipality contributing anything besides a public service announcement?  Nope.

    But, hey, it will do wonders for "awareness".  Even the mayor said so.  (BTW, this pink-can thing has caught on in a lot more places than just the town in MS.)
