Trouble swallowing for a couple of months now

Options

I have had discomfort swallowing (without other symptoms) for a couple of months now. It isn't severe, but it is always present and sometimes is uncomfortable. I feel as though I have a lump in my throat. I haven't seen a doctor yet. I was traveling, then I had a new mammogram to worry about, etc. etc. But mainly I feel as though I am reverting to bad old habits of never going to the doctor. Now I am just scared what this could be and keep putting things off. I have an appointment with my oncologist toward the end of this month, but maybe I am being stupid waiting for that. I'm currently on tamoxifen (post chemo and rads), but I don't see throat discomfort as an SE. Is it?

    Cary,

I had trouble swallowing for a while after chemo and rads were done, so I bet you are experiencing the same thing.  Gosh, even a year after rads, I remember coming up the stairs one day and suddenly I couldn't swallow (momentarily) at all!  I can say now that I haven't had the problem for a while.  Definitely bring it up to your Oncologist at your appointment, and if you notice it getting worse prior, call in and try to get it moved up.  It's always best to call if you really get uncomfortable.

    Hugs

    Bobbie

Thanks. What's worrying me is this swallowing problem developed just a couple of months ago, and my last radiation treatment was December (chemo ended in Sep 2009). Pre-cancer, I would just wait things out. Forever basically. I am trying to force myself out of that habit since obviously for all of us it isn't a good move. Glad to hear that you are not having the problem any longer.

I have heard that ladies who have had rads have this problem.  It's an SE of radiation but I don't know when it comes on.  I would definitely get it  check out.

it could also be a thyroid issue, totally unrelated to the BC, talk to your doc:) i've had thyroid issues for years and my throat can feel thick at times, have a friend who has different thyroid issues than mine and she experiences pain with swallowing most of the time and is in the process of meeting with surgeons about having it removed...
