Bone mets, right hip/leg?
Over the past 3 weeks or so I have been experiencing worsening right leg pain/discomfort. An odd feeling. Since Feb 09, one year after my chemo tx, both my feet have numbness and tingle and at times feel wet. In any case, the past week or so I have such pain on my right side, hip/leg, I can't even get a good nights sleep. It hurts to turn in bed. During the day I have aches and twinges, but nothing like I have at night. Does this sound like a bone mets to anyone or am I reading too much into it. Thank you all for your thoughts.

Bone mets seem to be completely different for everyone! I was certain that I had bones mets in my left shoulder and I was correct. Imagine my surprise to find out that not only my left shoulder was involved, but also the other shoulder, spine, pelvis, ribs and legs! No pain at all in the other places. I truly believe that all pains, whether mets or not, are worse at night, so that 's not particuarly a sign of bone mets. The only way you'll get any relief or satisfaction is to have scans. Hopefully, it won't be mets! Good luck.

I had had a fair amount of pain in my left arm and both my thighs. Spoke to the onc and he said to get a bone scan...easy, had one this week..turns out I'm getting old...just some mild arthritis. But I feel a whole lot better and at least I have one less thing to worry about. Talk to your doc and see of he ok's a scan. Good luck!

I've also developed some pain in my left hip. It's not terrible but it is irritating. I spoke to onc and from the description I gave her, she wasn't concerned but said if it's not gone in 2 week to call her back. I know I have arthritis in my back along with a degenerating disk but this is a different pain than I've had before. Always a worry when we have new aches and pains.

I'll be interested in reading this. I don't see my onc for three weeks but for the past few days I've had a left side ache that radiates down to my hip, or vice versa. I always have hip and leg pain from tamoxifen but this is different. I can't tell if it's bone or an organ. If it's still there in three weeks, I''ll mention it.
It's awful how any kind of ache or pain takes on a new meaning now! BC (before cancer), I would have barely thought about it.

Thanks so much for your thoughts. I will call him Monday and request, I mean Demand,(lol) a Bone scan. Coolbreeze, you are so, so right, about every little ache, pain, twinge. Is it Mets!!! I had AML back in 1981 when I was 20 and had a BMT. After, the Doctors checked my Blood Counts on Follow-ups, all was fine and I was good to go. This BC is so very different in a wicked sneaky way. I hate it. How it makes me feel. I am not the same person I was. Again, thanks for your responses.

Sorry this took so long. I finally saw my Onc yesterday. I did not demand the bone scan. He ordered x-rays of my right hip, femur and I think spine. I had that done right after seeing him. He said all was clear, but some arthritis in spine or hip, I forget (dah)!! I really wish I asked for a bone scan, but I chickened out. Could it still be mets that the x-ray did not detect? I am so mad at myself for not asking about that scan. Thanks to all of you and feel good.

westiesmom, I have had bone pain since chemo two years ago. My initial bone scan in 07 was negative. My oncologist recently (January) ordered an MRI of my spine which was negative for mets but showed a really bad slip at L-1 S-5. Since January I have had rib pain and continuing back pain so I had x-rays of the rib four months ago (negative). Just this Friday I had a bone scan which was negative too. I did find out that I am SEVERLY vitamin D deficient and this could be the source of some of the pain so I am on mega doses by prescription. Hang in and if you still feel badly get the bone scan. I did and I am glad I have peace of mind for now.

westiesmom - It's good to hear that nothing showed up on the xrays. Bone lesions most likey will show up on a simple xray. If you have tingling, that sounds like a nerve is involved. What does your onc suggest? Something is causing this pain. I hate it when the docs say the scans are clear and there is no mention of moving forward to find out WHAT could be causing the problem. If you want the answers for your own reference, ask for a copy of the report. That way if you go see another doc about this, you have the written report for them. And that way you will see EVERYTHING that was determined.
Everyone's symptoms of bone mets are different. Some have no symptoms. Mine started in my knee and actually hurt to walk on it, touch it, put pressure on it. There was no tingling or numbness. The rest of my lesions did not present pain. The later ones that progressed did - hip & C-spine but again, no tingling.
Don't be afraid to move forward. Hopefully it's not mets - doesn't sound like it. But something is giving you trouble. Sucks getting older, doesn't it? ;-)

Lookingforward, My Onc had my Vit D checked about 5 weeks ago, it is very low, 16. He told me to take some Vit D 2,000 to 3,000 a day. I didn't think to ask him if this could be a contributor. Being that I am so low in the 'D', I wonder why he didn't go straight to a bone scan instead of just a x-ray.
3katz, Were your bone mets found with an x-ray or scan? If he saw nothing on the x-ray does that definitely rule out any mets of the bone. I am having a tough time wrapping my haed around the idea that some arthritis in a spine can cause this pain on my leg/hip on the right side only. I will call the Onc in the am and get a copy of the report and also ask him, 'what now'?
I had AML in 1981 and had a bone marrow transplant from my brother. I was never told that from all that body radiation they gave me put me at risk for BC. I sometimes think my Onc. thinks I am a worry wort. I am allowed to be!!! Anyway

Yes - my mets showed on an X-ray. I was having a knee problem so that was the only area x-rayed. Half of the femural condyl (sp?) was black and there were a couple spots below on the tibia - not a real common area for arthritis or mets for that matter. That prompted a bone scan, PET and CT. The bone scan only showed a couple spots. Everything else was picked up on the PET. I haven't even had a bone scan since the first one because the PET picks up everything. The onc wants to do the PET to be sure there isn't spread elsewhere.
You are not a worry wort - just concerned. But please don't constantly dwell on the possibilities and let it consume your life. But continue to be diligent on taking care of yourself and checking on things that are not normal. Good luck with your onc - I hope he tells you what steps you should take. Maybe see an orthopedic?
You have been through so much. Doesn't it suck that treatment for one terrible disease can cause another? I was just talking to my friend about that - she has MS.
Warmest wishes . . .
Edited to add - I did have an MRI of the affected knee. That seems to be the best scan for bone mets. Perhaps and MRI of your lower back would be helpful.

Thanks for the info, 3katz. I did not call the Onc today. I have to go back Saturday to MA, I live there, but I am from NJ and decided to do all my tx's here. I will see if I can have an MRI scheduled for mid October when I come back. Hugs.

I haven't been here in a long time. I was recently diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer stage II-A to my spine. I underwent 10 rounds of radiation which helped the pain tremendously. I am now taking Ibrance and letrozole with a once a month infusion of a biophosphonate. I recently began feeling some pain in both of my hips. They are sharp and it feels like I'm going to fall down at times. I am now wondering if the cancer has spread to my legs/hips and will be following up next Tuesday. I am scared it might have moved to the hips and wonder what the treatment will be. Hip replacement? more radiation? It is hard not to be filled with anxiety every time I get a new pain. I'm glad I found this forum again.
