Effexor Sickness
I am starting Effexor at the suggestion of my primary care doctor. I have taken only one dose (37.5 mg) and was sick all day from it. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who had this happen but got past it and if so how long does it take? I don't want to trade one set of problems (menopausal madness) for another. I try to deal with the anger/anxiety issues that I have been facing for the past few years but I guess I am worn down by them and want a "quick" fix. I don't know if this is right for me and as much as my blessed husband wants to help me, he just can't. I was hoping maybe someone on this site has experience with Effexor. I have debated over taking medication and decided to give it a try but this may not be the right path for me. I will keep searching though. Any advice/thoughts would be appreciated. Thank you all in advance.

Trisheo--I was switched from Citalopram to Effexor in mid June. It was a gradual with-drawl with a med-free couple of weeks prior to starting Effexor. The day after I started it, I became incredibly nauseated, had chills, confusion, and very little energy (couldn't get off the couch). For me, these side effects were short-lived, even with increasing the dosage, and I started feeling better a couple weeks later. Now, I wouldn't consider NOT taking it....my anxiety and depression seem to be under control, which is allowing me to focus on trying to move forward. Like many meds, there are some se's that are ongoing, but for me, nothing as severe as what I was experiencing on Citalopram.
It is, however, important to realize that we are all unique and what works for one person, may not be the answer for another. The only thing that is universal is that there seems to be no "quick" fixes
. I feel your frustration and pain.....this part of my bc journey I found to be the most difficult. It's a process and still ongoing for me. All I can suggest is that you give it a few weeks; you will get past the sickness, and then, will slowly figure out whether this one is right for you. Also, it's important that you follow your doctor's instructions when starting or stopping any of these type of meds.....they know what they're talking about!!
This can be a very lonely and isolating time....just know that there are people out here who do understand and may be able to help. I will keep you in my thoughts!!
(((((( )))))) Sandy
p.s. I rarely took an Advil prior to being dx with bc. I was very reluctant to go this route, but am so glad now that I did.

Beach--Thank you very much for taking the time to respond. I appreciate it very much. Like I said, my husband is a trooper and has been on this very long journey right by my side but only I can decide what I need to do to make myself feel better. I guess I am sick of being sick, even though C has not risen its ugly head since diagnosis (cliche...but how true) and want someone elses opinion who is "in the know." I guess I am tired of thinking things through on my own. Anyway, it is nice to have a place to ask questions and nice to know there is someone there to answer. Best wishes.

If the side effects with Effexor continue you can ask your Drs. if there is another med they could try. Thankfully, there are plenty of other meds out there that can accomplish the same results.

Hi Trish...Effexor is interesting...it serves two purposes - anti-depressant and aid in reducing the hot flashes. I started with the 37.5 and stepped up. I got to the 75mg and found relief and asked if I needed to go further and was told no - if you feel ok with the dosage (it is low) then don't step up. I also take Xanax for anxiety in a low dose and pain meds for bone mets. The combo works very well for all the issues I was having - pain, anxiety, trouble sleeping, the crying all the time, the anger and the hot flashes from Arimidex. Mental health isn't a 'one size fits all' - you may have to try different things to get the combo that is going to work best for you.
Here is a thought: I have been taking it since late December 09. I think it was June (around the same time as Arimidex) that Effexsor went generic and I did notice I did not feel well the first day I took the new generic. There is something in the 'delivery method' (inactive ingredients) that didn't like me - I made sure to eat a little bit more food with it the next morning and I was fine. It is one of those that taking with food really does make a difference.
Hope it helps you with your decision! Hugs...LowRider

I was on Zoloft but had to switch to Effexor due to taking Tamoxifen. My body would not adjust to the Effexor at all. I felt totally weird on that stuff. I decided to drop the medication and instead go into weekly therapy and try my best to deal with the hot flashes. I just never had any luck with anti-depressants in the past except for the zoloft. Each person reacts different to medication so maybe you can talk to your doctor about what is going on and see what he/she suggests.
Yes, I am irritable, lack patience, mental case to the max but I guess this is the new "me" and I am trying to find a way to adjust to it -not working yet but not giving up on myself yet.

Trisheo: My primary care doctor put me on Effexor and I just started taking it this weekend. Of course I have a cold. :-( She said I may feel "weird" for a few days, but it will pass and to give it a few weeks, unless I feel really bad. I'm on 37.5 mg and taking the generic. I take it with food and plenty of water.
Does anyone know when it should start affecting the hot flashes? Mine were never horrible, but I still have them.

CANNOT thank everyone enough for conversing bout this -- 46, DCIS right stage1 -- atypical left...
I am diagnosed way back 12/09 - but 5 surgeries (2 re-excisions on right) , extended rad, (no chemo!) a whopping seroma and now reaction to tamoxifin @60 days (hosp required) lately making me believe I will never be the same again... In many ways I wont be :-) which is a benefit - more spiritual, more likely to be gentle with myself, and less likely to please everyone. (but with 2 teenagers as a single mom that can be a little tough ;-)
I am a long time antidepressant user. I need it -- it works for me.... Unfortunately years of Prozac cannot be anymore -- FYI, tried Celexa with disastrous results - (but everyone is different!!!!) I am now making decision to hedge my bets and start Effexor though I may not go back on tamoxifin - testing in that area still ongoing... but thats another discussion...Upshot is that I am not convinced I should/must have a total hysterectomy to take this drug,
Anyway - love the heads up about the nausua -- FYI - this is also a great thread http://community.breastcancer.org/forum/78/topic/723037 and also has a link to a one-page PDF I thought did not exist!!! Post it everywhere for those in need - http://www.medicine.iupui.edu/clinpharm/COBRA/TamoxifenGuide.pdf.
Thx again

Hi Trisheo. I've been on effexor for about 2 months now. I started with 37.5 mg generic and was pretty sick on it, especially for the first week or so (which was surprising to me, because I usually have a steel stomach!). Plus just the taste of the generic pills made me nauseous. I switched to the name brand when I went up to 75 mg and am doing fine.
I wish you the best with effexor and hope that awful SE diminishes soon!

I am having horrible brain shivers lately..not missing doses and taking at the same time daily..makes me crazy to think I am this addicted to this drug...I'd rather have the hot flashes

I was given effexor after giving birth to my twins, I was so depressed and couldn't handle the daily life of being a twin mom. I was on the lowest dose possible and still cut the capsules in half and still felt like a babbling idiot while on it. I sat on the couch just watching the girls play and everyone else do things. I just didn't have the energy to move...I didn't want to move or participate. I found the drugs to be worse than the illness. After about a month of it, I told my dr I couldn't live like this and he gave me xanax for when i needed it.
