When do I start counting?

This may seem like a really silly question, but I know that making it 5 years cancer free is a milestone.  What i don't know is when the time starts - I was dx in June of 2008, lumpectomy in August '08, chemo until Feb '09, then radiation through April '09.  Do I start counting from end of treatment?  I am so anxious to get to that five year mark! I keep forgetting to ask my onc.  Thanks to all!

Sgrimes, where to begin your count is entirely up to you.  Some girls start their count from the day of diagnosis and others from end of treatment.  I calculated mine from diagnosis as that is when I knew I had BC and what came after was just part and parcel of having  and dealing with BC.   Goodluck.

Survivor Day for me is Sept. 27 following a "routine" mammogram.  I refrained from knocking the crap out of the radiologist when he looked at the ultrasound and said sadly "I think you have breast cancer".  HE survived,   I cried for a while when I reached my car.  And I didn't slash my wrists.  I survived.

Had bx 3 days later and surgery exactly one week later (NOT something I recommend).  But I survived the diagnosis---and all the rest of it. 8 years this month, on the 27th.

And for any hitting your "nickle" year (or any cancerversary for that matter) DO SOMETHING NICE FOR YOURSELF, because rarely will anyone else remember the date.  And I can almost  forgive them for it.

I bought myself a beautiful black/grey pearl bracelet for my "nickle" year.  The date fell while were on vacation and I simply told my dh, I'm going shopping for my 5 year "prize".  He said go for it and I did.
