This site mentions many specialized surgical scar treatments. See below the breast anchor scar strip. There also have Extra-Long (22") strips possibly good for TRAM and LD flap & DIEP scars.

I used 1 tube of kelocote and thought it was working, ran out and replaced it with a new item my PS was selling called biocorneum which contains SPF 30. Has silicon dioxide in it but I didn't like the oxybenzene in the suncreen. I was also using it on a mole recently removed and I liked the added sunscreen component. Hindsite, would rather have kelocote then add sunscreen. Now I'm using the Tropol Active. S cream mentioned here. If I had more kelocote, I would compare products by using one each side as I was happy with the kelocote but I think I may be more pleased with the Tropol. Time will tell.

bumping for Becky
whitedove, to answer your question above, I had only used the Kelo-cote for a couple of weeks, and I did massage. I used it primarily on my long Diep tummy scar. It comes in a tiny tube, so I didn't use it every day -- more like every other day. Deanna
PS ~ Someone PM'd me to ask if Kelo-cote is over the counter. It is, but I found it on-line (eBay) for quite a bit less than the SRP. I know you have to be careful about getting fake stuff on eBay. That happened to me with LaMer. But this didn't seem like a product that anyone would bother faking -- too small a market -- so I felt comfortable picking it up that way and was happy with the cost savings.

Just added a PS above about where I got my Kelo-Cote, but thought I would also add these links.
This is their official website. Looks like they have an introductory (TV) offer that looks pretty good: https://www.kelo-cote.com/
And this was a site I'd found that has a lot of scar solutions, as well as reviews of the products they sell, which I found very helpful: http://www.makemeheal.com/mmh/product.do?id=10066

PS told that due to my coloring a (freckly, redhead), I would be left with red/pink scars.
However, I used Bio-Oil, available OTC at most drugstores, as soon as the wound healed and my scars have blended into the skin - fine white line.
You're supposed to put it on twice daily, but I probably used it 5 times a week and a little goes a long way.
-
I am using the Tropol Active S too...I think some of the red is starting to diminish! Maybe?
PB: I like to face and eye cream too.......
-
Hi there - I wanted to share a page with you that I found regarding the different types of scar remedies.
http://www.cosmeticsurgeryforums.com/scar_treatments.htm
My sister just had bilateral mastectomies and she used the Silicone Sheeting, and it really helped her.
Hope this helps.

Hi everyone, Just ordered the Tropol Active S & encouraged by all your remarks. I can't wait.
Has anyone had any success with skin lightening/bleaching creams?
Does anyone mind if I ask about eye wrinkles/dark circle creams? It seems like they come along with the bc/stress territory. I'm tired of trying all the products and just want to know if any of you ladies have had any success with that as well.
Giselle7, champagne sounds good to me! lol
I read a t-shirt that said, "I'll have a Cafe-Mocha Vodka-Valium Latte to go, please". It made me laugh as I am an advocate for "better living through better chemistry". I just couldn't order it though. I couldn't wear it to church, my kid's school, or even as a nightshirt as my two daughters would definitely get the wrong idea. Maybe if I go away for a girls weekend Out of town.

im so thankful for your info.. were they keloid, or reg. scars> my dermo has injected (painful) my port site, which keloided bad, 3 times, is flatter, less red much improved. so, if nothing else works, this doe, but, its last step syuff. they use..get this. a chemp drug inject it into scar.. a bit of the (BIG) dog that bit cha?? lol 3jaysmom

My PS had me start massaging vitamin E cream on my scars about as soon as the drains came out and everything had closed up. Every time I showered for almost a year following my exchange, I massaged vitamin E cream on my scars. They are still there, but they are faint lines. He used dissolvable sutures to close. I think my scars look much better than my mother's did (she had her mx's in 1972 and 1990, and I don't think the surgeon had her use anything special; she also had ugly sutures).
I think I found he vitamin E cream at Walgreens (been awhile since I bought it), and a big jar lasts me a long time.
I hope this helps someone.

Hummingbird- Love the t-shirt!!!!
-
Kate, just read your signature! Love it. Haven't heard that one before..."Yes they're fake and the real ones tried to kill me!" That says it all right there. lol Maybe, I'll order the t-shirt just for fun; even, if only to make me laugh. It would be funny to see other's reactions though. Can't wait to get the Tropol Active S. Anyone else try it?
-
My DIEP was performed Jan.2009. Laser was encouraged and included in my follow-up. I hated the treatments but love the results! I also massaged with vitamin E. I received all of my treatment at Dana-Farber and Brigham and Women's in Boston. I have had nurses and technician ask who did my reconstruction and have been told what a good result I have had. I guess they see more than I do! lol ...Little to no surgery scaring on breast; just difference in the lighter skin coloring of the donor tissue. Did not have laser on belly scar; that is still very much a discolored scar. Kathy

Just catching up on the thread. What great ideas and suggestions, everyone. Thanks for your helpful tips and tricks. Kcrews - can you say more about how the laser treatments work? How soon after surgery do they do them? How do they determine whether or not someone is a candidate? Does insurance cover if you are a BC pt.? So glad to hear your results have been so positive. Have been doing the SCAR AWAY silicone tape...so far no real differences but finding it is a bit cumbersome washing the many pieces of tape daily (lots of scars!).
-
I didnt wash my Silicone sheets everyday whitedove. I also left them on when showering & just patted them dry.
I am 5+ months out from stage 2 SGAP. I posted about 2 months ago ( I think)
I have tried Silicone sheets, Brown tape & massage.
I used the brown tape for about 6 weeks on my Long SGAP incision ...With Silicone sheets in the 2 areas that were Heading towards Keloiding. it was hard to get the SS to stay though.
The brown tape stayed on very good! Too good. It killed me to take it off- felt like my skin was coming with it...But it hadnt irritated my skin...I think I must have very fine hair there that rips out with the tape- I am completely numb on my back area.
I used the Brown tape & Silicone tape on my breasts also. Used the B Tape about 2.5 months here. SS stayed on good here & No pain when removing the B tape- Numb here too.
I used them much longer on my breast since the pain wasnt there when removing.
I did stop both about 2 months ago...And switched to daily Massage with Any kind of lotion...although I used the Palmer cocoa butter alot. I was massaging 1 month after surgery- but not daily...Usually during a tape break
Dh has been wonderful about giving me massages. Honestly I think that has helped the most. I always tell him to concentrate on those incisions & massage hard : )
Could be a combination of all & time too. But most of my bad areas have flattened out very well. They are still wide- Which I tend to do.
I also got Lots of samples of Bio Oil at Walgreens this weekend. So I will try that- Dh prefers lotions...So I will try the Bio oil on my breasts- I have several bad areas still...so will see how that works.
-
So I've been using the Tropol Active S for almost a month now and I do think it is working! Though one side seems to be healing faster than the other for some reason. It's helping with my incisions as well as the red marks from my Alloderm stitiches. I was having trouble remembering to apply it at least 2x a day so now I just keep it next to my toothbrush.
-
Yeah Kate33...cannot wait to get mine in the mail.
Has anyone ever used bleaching creams? I use Proactive lightening for scars on my face, but wasn't sure about using it on my breast scars. Anyone?
I would also like to know more about the laser treatments kcrews...
-
I've been using the tropol active for about three weeks now. My PS thought my scars looked good and I did not tell him yet I switched off his product. I am using the face creams sent as well. I have noticed dark circles under my eyes that Hummingbird mentioned.
I am very itchy under the implants, drives me nuts.
-
Hummingbird - Not sure about your Q re: bleaching creams. I was told that the darkness depends on the type of skin you have. More olive or darker skin = darker scars. I have used PHYTO+ by SKINCEUTICALS to lighten facial areas affected by sun damage in the past. It's very natural but costly. Right now I am seeing good results with Scar Away tape. I will use that until the incisions are less fresh then switch over to a cream, probably Tropol Active S or Invicible.
PB22-Is the itchiness under the implants scar tissue that is internal? Sorry to hear about that - sounds like it is annoying to say the least.
-
whitedove, thnks for the info. Where do you buy Scar Away tape? Do you use it right after surgery when the tape the Drs put on washes off? What is Invincible? Have you used the Tropol Active S before?
PB22: Great to hear you are using the same stuff. Let me know how it goes. Like whitedove asked, is the itching on the surface or inside? What did your dr. say about that and how to treat it? Hope it is better soon. Does any anti-itching meds help?
-
PB22- I also had the itching feeling for awhile but it seems to have gone away now. I remember reading on one of these threads that the itching can be a kind of phantom pain. I've noticed as I've gotten more sensation back that the itching gradually went away so maybe it is related to the nerves regenerating. Hope it goes away for you, too.
-
Hummingbird-Scar Away can be found in most pharmacies like Walgreens. My PS gave me ScarAway right after my exchange. I started it after the surgical tape (2 weeks later) I heard of Invincible and Tropol from this thread actually! Look on page 1 to see links etc. From the women who used it, there have been very positive reports.
Good luck.
-
Thanks Whitedove! I'll look into it. I'll let everyone know how the Tropol works.
-
Hello all:
Just an update about SCAR AWAY. I am a little concerned today about using this tape as my scars seem redder than before. The scars are luckily flat, however, which is a big difference from the scar I did not treat from my SNB. That scar is all keloided :-((( and I think beyond remedy. So, I ask if anyone else notices changes in color over time that make the scar appear to be worsening. I wonder if this is just a stage the skin is going through as it heals. Please chime in if you have any experience with silicone tape. I've only been using it for 2 weeks.
I have heard from my PS that skin starts to scar after 2 weeks ie. that the skin cells are working overtime to pile on and close up the wound area. If one waits too long to start a scar treatment, then they will be up against flattening a pile of skin cells (keloid) vs. working with the skin prior to it really scarring badly. Long story short, earlier is better. That's my lay person's version of how skin heals.
-
Hi whitedove,
That would concern me too if the scars were redder. I'm so sorry that you have keloided scars. I'm not to sure about how you treat that. Hopefully someone else has gone through the same thing and can give advice. I have noticed results already with the Tropol. I can see just a slight lessening of the redness. Did you say you've used it before? Hopefully, you'll have answers soon. Maybe give your Dr. a call and ask what to do. Best wishes.
-
Thanks for this thread! I've just ordered the Tropol-Active-S and will keep you posted on my progress. I just got the staples out Monday from my MX. I have already bought emu oil for my upcoming rads and I'm using that on the scar until then.
-
Hi Riley702,
I will be interested in what you think about it. How is the emu oil working? Your Mx was this past Monday or you had staples out? How are you doing? Are you past the drainage tubes yet? Hope you're doing well.
Did anyone try bio oil or coconut oil? I had to stop as it made me break out with pimples. Ick! I heard those are good too. Maybe I'll use them on other body parts with scars and keep you posted.
-
Hummingbird, I got the staples out Monday. I had the MX on the 8th, and got my drains out on the 20th. I have a little fluid accumulation noticeable now that the swelling has gone down, so I poked it to make it jiggle for the BS and asked him "Fluid or fat?" LOL. It's fluid, so I'm back wearing the chest wrap 12 hours a day, mostly at night. If it doesn't improve in the next week or so, I'll call his office and see what they want to do.
My scar has a little lumpy part where he took 2 lymph nodes out in my armpit, so I've been massaging it more. The emu oil seems to be working well. It rubs in well and doesn't feel greasy. You only need a little.
-
Hi Riley-Welcome! Congratulations on just getting the staples out from your MX. I hope your recovery is going well and that you have been comfortable. So glad you find the thread helpful. We all can benefit from each other's wisdom!.
Hummingbird, I think I will hold off on the SCAR AWAY tape for a few days and see if the redness subsides. I do wonder if all of the pulling off of the tape (as one is instructed to wash the tape daily) is doing anything to the tender skin beneath. I have not tried coconut oil but have heard good things about the Bio Oil from other sisters on this thread. Sounds like those substances caused an allergic reaction. BTW, My PS knows less (about scars, bras, pec exercises) than what I have found on these great threads (sorry ps). The PS was advocating for Mederma, which from my past experience, is a product that works minimally.
I am leaning towards getting Invincible (see page 1 of this thread) as I have scars that tend to have darkening and the Vit C in that product appeals to me for that reason. I am also considering Tropol Active S that people are having good results with.
By the way, is it just me, or is there anyone else who does not massage the scars out of fear or squeamishness? I feel resistant to massaging them, perhaps because my incisions are so fresh (6 weeks out) and I feel like I should be delicate with them. Maybe it's my own hang up!

Reposting this link: Here is a comparison chart of some scar treatments. It seems out of date though as it does not include many of the newer treatments that are being mentioned here.
