Vitamins
Hi all, wasn't really sure where to post this. I'm taking Aromasin (1 1/2 years now) and one of the side effects is depression, fatigue, etc...
Mu Onc said don't take any processed forms of estrogen or any estrogenic herbs etc... Does anyone know if it is OK to take Primrose Oil or Flax Oil? I went to get my regular fish oil for depression and they were out, so I got Primrose and Flax combination; ;supposed to supply same Omega 3 -6 & 9 as fish oil, but now I wonder if theyare also estrogenic. Does anyone have any info on this.
Thanks.

Debi ~ Flax is okay -- at least according to many oncs dieticians, although there will be a few who suggest avoiding it. I'm not sure about the Primrose Oil, but I have a feeling it may be too estrogenic; at least I haven't seen much discussion of it or posts supporting its use for those who have had a bc dx.
In addition to badger's suggestion, you might try doing a search to see if there have been any comments on it anywhere on BCO.
Hoping this will bump your thread for additional input ~ Deanna

Debi -- There is SO much conflicting information about Evening Primrose Oil, and I suspect it simply hasn't been studied enough, or at least long enough, to say whether or not it's safe.
My story is that I took EPO daily for about 10 years to relieve PMS symptoms of depression. My periods finaly ceased in 2004 and I was dx'd with BC in 2008. Did EPO contribute to that? Maybe, but I also had several other risk factors.
Now that I'm on Femara, I still get short periods of sadness/the blues, but I won't go back to EPO!
As for ground flaxseed, again there is conflicting info, but some extremely reputable scientists have been studying it for several years in relation to cancer and their findings are positive that it can be beneficial for both breast and prostate cancers. Then again, one of our BCO sisters started using flaxseed after her first dx of BC and a few years later she was dx'd with a recurrence. Was the flaxseed a contributing factor?
I was also taking ground flaxseed regularly following my dx, but after hearing her story, I'm wondering..... At any rate, I've found a replacement -- grape powder, sold by one of our local (organic) wineries. It's packed with fibre and other essential nutrients, so I'm sticking with it (a tbsp in my fruit smoothie every morning).
The only piece of advice I give anyone looking things up on the net is to avoid the sites that have .com in their name. They are commercial sites, wanting to sell you their product, and are really not to be trusted for factual info.
Good luck!

Thank you, all of you wonderful ladies. This site never ceases to amaze me for the support I continue to receive, even after 2 years. I decided not to try to EPO (why take a chance when I don't have to) and am sticking to fish oil (only hope it's not from the gulf.) May give Celexa another try. I see other BC survivors who are energetic, working F/T, hiking - better than they used to be. And I start an exercise program only to have insomnia interfere and then illness (sinus infectons, etc..from being worn out from no sleep.) I try hard, but seemed to constantly get knocked down (Pain, illness, memory loss, fatigue...what the....???) But, when I turn to this site I always feel better and ready to give it another go. Thanks again,my comrades in arms. : )

There are studies that suggest fish oil may help with depression. I work at a doctor's office and the standard dose is 1,000 to 2,000mg/day by the doc's here. Of course check with your onc if OK for you. If you are on blood thinners such as coumadin, amoung other meds, your Dr. may not want you to take. Also if you are having surgery, usually recommended to stop taking 2-3wks before procedure d/t risk of bleeding.

Hi all
Looking for advice on multivitamin for wife who is starting Femara Tommorrow. Saw estrogin mentioned on multi vitamin product she bought and wrote to Femara for advice. Got answer to talk to onco which is not going to help as I asked when he originally prerscribed about using an alternative medicine formula as opposed to Femara I Read the side effects comments on this web site and am scared to death about all the bad stuff mentioned for this drug. Wife is ER,PR positive so I need to watch what she takes to avoid estrogin. You ladies are great and bless all of you for willing to share and take part here.
