Veins are blown & I need an IV

Options

Anybody have any sugestions for me?  I have to take a test that will require an IV.  My veins are blown from the Chemo, and they never can find a good 1 w/o sticking me 6-9 times.  My Dr suggested they put the IV in my leg.  Anyone ever do that?  What is that about and if it's such a good idea, why wouldn't they have done that before?  I suspect there is something that I don't know?

Yep, I did.  They have stuck them in the back of my knee, it is merely an easier place if they stick it in your arm and it won't trip you up.  You can fall easily when it's in  your leg.  This is for your safety and for the nurses convenience.  I only know because I asked.

They can put them anywhere, and often do, as my veins are shot from chemo too.

Here are a few suggestions based on firsthand experience that might help.  (1)  Drink plenty of water in the 24 hrs. before your IV procedure. It makes a big difference.  (2)  Tell them up front that you have a serious vein problem and insist on having the most experienced IV nurse or tech do the job the first time -- not called after someone with less experience has failed after sticking you multiple times.  (3) Ask them to use a heating pad prior to inserting the needle. They usually have little ones to microwave for that purpose.

If it's any consolation to you, my veins seem to have improved almost 2 years post-chemo, and hopefully yours will, too.     Deanna
