Did your CA27-29 go up?

When you were diagnosed with a recurrance, did your CA27-29 go up?  I just had one done a couple weeks a go, and my counts were fine.  Now I'm finding lumps in my cancer side.  I had a BMX Nov 18th, 2009, no reconstruction.  I'm supposed to be getting my scars revised, but now I'm worried that maybe I need to have the lumps checked.

    Hi Chele,

Haven't seen you on the boards in a while.  I don't have experience with your question, but wanted to say hi.  Other posts I've read, and stuff my oncologist has told me, indicates that the tumor markers don't correlate well with breast cancer recurrence.  I'm sure more experienced persons will chime in with better info.

Definitely get the lumps checked.  Maybe it is just scar tissue?  Keep us posted!

Hi!  Good to see you too!  No, I haven't been here much.  How have you been?

As for the lumps, I suppose they could be scar tissue.  They are up high, in the vicinity of the original main tumor.  If I had breasts they'd feel like glands/ducts - but I'm not supposed to have those anymore!

On the one hand my oncologist seems to rely heavily on the CA27-29, on the other he seems to not put much stock in them, so that's why I thought I'd ask.   My revision is on Oct. 7th, so maybe I can ask the PS to take a peak while he's in there?  Not really what he does, I know - but if he's taking off excess tissue I suppose he could go ahead and send it in to pathology?

    *sigh*

Most the time I feel perfectly confident that I've beaten cancer, there's just that small sliver of doubt that makes me paranoid!

    Hi Chele,

I know what you mean about the ping-pong between thinking you're fine and then getting worried.  98% of the time I think I am perfectly okay.  The 2% can make me crazy tho!

For the most part, I'm doing great.  Done with chemo (no rads) and surgery/recon.  I'm pretty much back to my regular routine.

Yeah talk to your PS about taking a sample during your revision ... seems like a good idea.

    best of luck,

    Sue
