Help, can you recommend a breast surgeon in Tampa, Fl area?

Options

Hello

I desperately need to find a breast surgeon in the Tampa, FL area! My primary told me she made a referral to St Joseph Hospital and they would call me in 1-2 days. Then on Wednesday her nurse called and left me a message stating he called the place for my appointment and gave them my insurance info. Also said they would call the next day, now Friday still haven't heard from anyone. Not overly happy with my PC anyway. I would like to find a surgeon through someone that has first hand experience.

I decided this is my life and I need to take control of it, not to rely on someone else. I'm so scared, have had this lump for at least 3 months that I know of. Mass has irregular boarders with significant shadowing and lymph nodes under my arms have been swollen for three months. Also  lump has not changed at all or moved.

Any help will be greatly appreciated and thank you.

Sylvia Campbell is very highly recommended. She is in South Tampa and I believe she works out of At Joe's also. I'm In St Pete so I chose a surgeon here.

lots, I'm so sorry you are having to go thru this.  Have you  considered Moffitt?  Dr. John Kilik is my BS.  He is warm, caring and on  top of everything.  You can tell him Mary sent you.  I will PM you with phone numbers.  Blessings.  Mary

It is awful that you are having to deal with this frustration along with everything else.  I highly recommend Dr. John M. Cox.  His brother (Charles) started the Breast Center at Moffitt.  I had my mastectomy in August of 2007.  The reason I didn't use Moffitt was the delay.  I couldn't deal with that.  I had my surgery over before they could even see me for a consultation to see if I needed a biopsy.  Dr Cox made my dx on July 17th and Moffitt didn't have a first appointment for me until August 12th!  Dr. John Cox was wonderful, kind, caring, knowledgable, upfront with you, but in a good approachable way.  His office is the Tampa Breast Care Specialists.  Stay positive and stay strong.  It has been three years for me, triple negative with 3 positive nodes and all is going well :-)

I did not have a problem with a delay at Moffitt because I intensely advocated for myself and got up to leave.  That changed everything and my surgery was moved up quite a bit.

Thanks to everyone....now I at least have some names and a direction to start in. I have thought about going to Moffitt...I have heard there is a wait to get in. If I choose Moffitt can I directly see the doctor that I prefer or do I have to see whoever is working there the day of my appointment?

Again thank you, all this wondering what to do and who to see is exhausting. You don't want to entrust your life to just anyone and I have a three year old son that needs me.

I feel for you going through this with a small child.  That was exactly my reason for not wanting to deal with a place where I knew the care was excellent, but the energy involved with navigating the services would be immense.  I was 81/2 months pregnant and had a 4 year old at the time of dx.  I had also just moved to the area a few weeks prior.  With no family living anywhere nearby, I simply had too much on my plate.  My obgyn, found Dr. John Cox for me when he found out about the delay and now recommends all his patients there.  Dr. Cox and his office staff were very supportive and understanding of my circumstances.  I know everyone has their own extenuating circumstances that seem to make this an overwhelming time.  I will say that I am thankful for my children who gave me a much needed diversion from the surgery, treatments and recovery seemed to come quicker.

    Hi Lost,

I went to and still go to Dr. Peter Blumencranz in Clearwater.  He came highly recommended and is wonderful.  He has some other offices as well and is affiliated with Moffitt, too.  I think you can check out some stats online now.

I used Dr. Charles Cox - he is now in the same office as his brother Dr. John Cox. He is a very caring and knowledgeable doctor. I would go to him again in a heartbeat.

I'm sorry you're having to go through this it can be a crazy roller coaster ride. I HIGHLY reccomend Dr. John Kiluk at Moffit. He was recomended to me by a dear freind and I truly feel blessed to have him as my BS. He is such a compassionant, highly skilled surgeon who treats the whole person and not just the breast.

The entire experience at Moffit has been incredible. I called Dr Kiluks office on a Thursday and they gave me an appt. for the following Friday. When I expressed my fear of waiting even a week his nurse said she was going to see him later that morning in clinic and she would see if he could see me earlier. Jane (his awesome nurse) called me a couple hours later and said the Dr. would see me on Tuesday. He greeted my husband with a handshake and me with a hug  and consulted with us for over an hour.

I had my MX on August 9th and he did and incredible job. Please do yourself a favor and at least meet with him. I think you will be very happy if you do.

I also used Dr. John Cox. He is great. He is very caring, and will even stay late to see you when there is a need. As I understand it his brother is going to be joining him soon. I just can't say enough good about him, he has been a life line for me during this very difficult time.

Can someone help me decide where to go for the next phase of diagnosis in Tampa Bay? I had an abnormal mammogram and ultrasound.  Radiologist wants to do an MRI, but their facility does not perform biopsies.  I read that you should have the MRI done where you will have the biopsy should a biopsy become necessary.  My PCP recommended St. Anthony's or Morton Plant's Breast Centers, but I can't find anything about who and how good their surgeons are should surgery become necessary.  I read that Dr. Cox in Tampa was voted one of the best doctors in America for breast surgery.  I would like to go to him should I need surgery.  So, do I also need to be diagnosed there or can I be diagnosed in Pinellas and have surgery there should I need it.

My other concern is the cost, as I have a $10k deductible and am out of work at the moment.  I am going into my retirement money to pay the costs, so want good quality care, but don't want to have the same procedure done over because I was dx'd at one place and had surgery at another.

I just don't know how things work in the breast cancer world.  I feel like every choice I make could have big health and/or financial implications. I am not getting much guidance from my PCP and the radiologist never speaks to me directly, only through my PCP.

I am picking up my films tomorrow and would like to make an appt. this week.  Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Can anyone give a good recommendation for a onc at Moffitt? (Or PM me the names to maybe avoid if there are any)  I'm starting out new there now and could use all the good help I can get to navigate the place.

    Thanks!!

    Kim,

Dr. Charles Cox is my BS.  I had my biopsy and MRI done by Dr. Mary Gardner at the USF-UCH Breast Imaging in the same building as his office. They communicate with each other on the same computer system so they can all see the same info.  My onc is Dr. David Wright, also same building, same computer...  It is great because they all communicate with each other.  All are warm and fuzzy.  Surgery can be done at the Morsani Center on the USF campus or UCH Women's Center.  Good luck.
