Julie,-Hello and welcome. Sorry to hear about your dx. Please know there is lots of support here from many wise women.

Did anyone see the New York Times article about errors in dx DCIS?

Still looking for a ps in the Annapolis Baltimore area with experience doing nsm. Or any place in Maryland! Has anyone had any feed back on Dr. James Chappell or Christopher Spittler?

Whitedove, thanks for the link. I subscribe but must have missed it.  Wow and right here in West Palm Beach.  The point to be taken is with the iniitial early stage DCIS dx, there is no hurry to immediately go into surgery and to get a second path opinion from a different hospital.  I did not know it was the hospital that gets billed for sending it out to another facility for second opinion, I thought it was the patient, but I'm sure they turn around and bill the pt as well.

Robinlea, it just occured to me I know a pathologist up in the Baltimore area who I spoke with after my dx, friend of family.  I am going to email him for a breast specialist.  I will inquire about the specifics docs as well.

Robinlea, the chief pathologist at U of Maryland whose interest is breast, is out until Monday and I will hopefully get back with you with a surgeon/PS who does the NSM.

    Santa Monica/Los Angeles-

Dr. Jay Arthur Jensen, Plastic Surgeon

This surgeon's name was given to me by another member who, unfortunately, was not able to have a nipple sparing mastectomy.  She passed this surgeon's name on because he has had excellent results doing NSM on larger breasted women using a two step process. ( Most surgeons will only consider you a candidate if you are C cup or smaller but Dr. Jensen will do D cup women.)

Here is a link to his website-

I am scheduled for this procedure in September with Dr. Frank at St. Francis in Hartford, CT.  I had never even heard about it until he suggested it.

    Vancouver, BC, Canada

Dr Urve Kuusk - surgeon (breasts only) She was very understandable re nipple & skin sparing idea, and I would trust her if she had recommended not. Highly knowledgeable & widely respected.

Dr Peter Lennox - PS (breasts only) Reconstructed using Alloderm (one-step). Head of the UBC Breast Reconstruction Program.

    Robinlea -

I just had NSM - bilateral - at Johns Hopkins with Dr. Tsangaris on July 21 - a great BS.  I'm pretty sure there are BS at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore as well and a PS surgeon there - Bernard Chang - is supposed to be very good.

Please PM me if you want more details!  kim

I am just 3 days post op from my risk reducing NSM and feeling fabulous. Both breasts are bruised as expected but my nipples are pink in color. My surgery was performed in Manhattan @ NYU for anyone considering the NYC metropolitan area. Both physicians are truly awesome "Top Gun" experienced surgeons, highly skilled &  compassionate. Together they have formed an incredible partnership. Breast surgical oncologist is Richard Shapiro & Plastic Surgeon is Nolan Karp. Surgery was 4 hours long with [hidden] infra-mammary incisions. Pre/post op nursing care was outstanding. Feel free to PM me anytime for more details.

I had a NSM at Johns Hopkins with DIEP reconstruction.  Extremely pleased with the outcome.  Post op care was excellent as well.

I had a bilateral NSM several months ago at Johns Hopkins with immediate DIEP reconstruction .  Extremely pleased with the outcome!  I also had Dr. Tsangaris and I cannot begin to tell anyone how grateful I am to him and my plastic surgeon Dr. Manahan.  I have also heard very positive feedback about Dr. Chang at Mercy as well.

PB22    I never could find a surgeon in Md that does allot of nsm, so I have sch. surgery for Oct with my Bs and the Ps who has only done one of the NSM. My PS does alot of Mastectomies and my BS has done about 5 of the NS. My hands are tied because I have to have surgery in oct. and have run out of time. I am not a candidate for the flap because I have no extra body fat.

WhiteDove: Can you tell me the name of your doctors? The breast surgeon I went to for my lumpectomy (ADH) doesn't do nipple sparing mastectomies. I'm looking for another doctor for a second opinion anyway, so I'd like one who does NSM. Mine wants me on tamoxifen, and I have a prescription for it from the oncologist but I'm leaning heavily toward PBM so I'm gathering info. I'm right in the middle of CT and so far have seen St. Francis doctors. The plastic surgeon I saw told me that the breast surgeon didn't do NSM; I hadn't even thought to ask. Thank you!

Heebie_Jeebie: So glad you posted this. I've been seeing Dr. Zarfos also at the breast center at St. Francis. Since she thinks PBM is overkill for me and thinks I should be doing tamoxifen, I didn't even ask her if she did NSM. She sent me to an oncologist whom I liked, across the street, and a plastic surgeon in Bloomfield, who I also liked, but that office is the one who said that Zarfos didn't do NPM. Since I want a second opinion anyway, maybe I should see Dr. Frank. Though I wonder if it's bad form to seek a second opinion of another doctor in the same office, or if it should be at a different hospital. Is there protocol for that? I'm at 40% risk according to Gail Model (I'm 42, just diagnosed with ADH on lumpectomy; mother had BC age 47, and paternal grandmother had it in her 80s) and I'm leaning heavily toward PBM instead of Tamoxifen and increased surveillance, but I'm still gathering info.
