I just got back from bringing my angel to college. I absolutely love her dorm room. Her roommate is so sweet and seems to be a bit neurotic like by baby....they color coordinate their clothes, both seem to be perfectionist, worriers and mama's girls. They also managed to coordinate their dorm colors long distance and did a great job - I wanted to move in. They have a fantastic dorm with a view of the bayou. They each have their own bedroom with beds, closets, dressers and desks, shared bathroom with a double sink and a small kitchen type area for small fridges, microwaves and an itty bitty table for two (no sink or stove). DH and I took everyone (roommate and her boyfriend) to dinner last night and had a great time. This morning we all went to breakfast, back to fix up a few more things at the dorm, then it was goodbye. It sure is going to be quite around here.
I have about six subjects in my favorites, but don't visit them much anymore. Like Gill said we run into each other on Stage III (you know you're a cancer patient when.....) and TN site. I used to read and/or post elsewhere, but don't feel the connection like I did here. I did remove quite a few items in my favorits a few months ago, but for some reason left some there that I don't read, but wanted to keep.
-
Donna - Way to go girl! I hope you enjoyed your Mexican treat this weekend.
Weety/Gilly - You both sound like wonderful teachers. After struggling in the standards-focused, sit-and-do-your-worksheet environment of public school, my son now goes to a private school that focuses on academics but with a much more individualized learning approach and has a huge arts program in which all students participate in visual arts, drama, music, and writing. His transformation has been astounding. He now loves school, his grades have soared, he is working above grade level in math and english, he writes amazing poetry and is learning the piano. 90% of kids at this school go on to college. This is remarkable in itself, but even more so when you consider that most of them were failing in public school.
Jenn- Wow. College dorms have certainly changed from the days when you crammed into a tiny room and carried your toiletries down the hall to the communal bathroom.
Lilah - 20 favorites? Where do you find the time? HA. I've got three...this board, the Sept 09 chemo board, and the book board. I do browse around from time to time and see you ladies on other boards. It's like running into old friends.

Well most of them don't get comments at all anymore (and I am slowly removing those) -- others have only 1 or two a week... I would say I have 6 really active threads.
Great story about your daughters new digs
My roommate and I freshman year turned up with the exact SAME comforter set! NOT planned either... it just happened. It was a rather unique patter, too, and so we felt we were perfectly matched. We are still friends to this day.
-
Well, here we are at day two and my daughter is having meltdown after meltdown. To start with she is sick with a nasty viral infection. She started with a sore throat Thurs/Fri and by Sunday it was full blown. It didn't help that she was starting school feeling like poop, then today she realized that two of her classes only work on Windows based computers and she has a Mac. She called Apple, went to Best Buy and talked to the Apple rep at Best Buy. They all said that she can add Windows to her Mac, but that the work she's trying to download may still come over encrypted because she's downloading it to a Mac. Ugh!!! She is really obsessive about her school work and likes to be prepared, so this has her really stressed. I think I've calmed her down for now, but it looks like we'll have to buy another windows based computer.
Okay, I'm finished fussing for now, none of it related to BC, but I just needed to vent.
-
Jen -- aw sorry your daughter is having a rocky start. I'm sure she is homesick and this is the way she is showing it (obsessing about the mac vs windows issue). Hopefully once school gets under way and she gets involved in the social life, things will calm down.
-
Thanks Lilah - today she sounded better, but then again I purchased a HP Laptop online @ Best Buy that I scheduled for pick up at the store near her. I guess she was doing better, she is now the proud owner of a fairly new Mac and and HP (windows based) computer. Really??? Who would have thought that she would need both???? I talked to computer guy that travels the country helping large businesses with computer "stuff" he said exactly what the Apple and Best Buy reps told my daughter - she'll need a Windows computer, which is why she ended up with two. To make myself feel somewhat better I told her the HP was mine and on loan to her. Tomorrow she starts rushing - then she has something or another planned Friday so she'll be busy. So....hopefully she'll be too busy going forward to get homesick.
Lilah - I can't remember, but did you see The Expendables? We saw it over the weekend - what did you think of it?
-
Aw no Jen I did not see The Expendables.... my BF went (he said it was a lot of action LOL) -- I just couldn't muster the interest. What did you think?
-
I hate to ruin for anyone, but in all honesty - it's on my top 10 list of bad movies. I need to see another movie to make up for it
My sweet angel seems to be doing better and is a little (tiny) bit less homesick. She started rushing for her sorority - which will have her busy. I'm crossing my fingers that she gets in because she really wants it.
-
It's Sunday - DH and woke up this morning and realized neither of us had made plans for the day, we have the entire day to lounge.........relax..........lounge.......and do what we want. Yesterday I babysat for my godchild and his sister (my cousin's children) and just had so much fun - my godchild is 14 months and his sister is 4 - both really fun ages.
DD is much happier and has said she still misses home, but does like college. She started rush on Thursday and rushed for two sororities that she liked. Both are calling her back each day......she is really enjoying it and enjoying meeting all of the people from the sororities. I'm so glad she is starting to enjoy herself and that she is feeling better from that virus she caught.
And....today marks the 5 year anniversary for Katrina. When I look back and realize how much has happened since then it's unbelievable. I remember going to my friends house three months after the storm (when they finally allowed peopled to return) to see if there was anything to salvage. First and foremost - the quite stillness that surrounded us was screaming in my ears.........where were the birds, the dogs, children.......It was was an absolutely beautiful day - the sun was shinning and the sky was a bright blue with a few soft white clouds lingering above, but then you realized there were no sounds coming from anywhere and it brought you back into reality. Ahhhh.....what a day. As we pulled up to her house there was a small fishing boat balancing between two roofs across the street from her home..........a car on another roof and her shed which had tumbled upside down was across the street. DH and I got out of the car, hugged our friends, cried and laughed, put on our hazmat suits and boots and walked into her home, the stench was overwhelming..........as we trudged through this swampy mucky mud towards the kitchen/den area we came across her gutters from the back of the house - they were in the hall, her big leather sofa's were turned over across the room, her granite counter top was under the 3-4 feet of muck, yet there sitting next to her back glass doors was a small metal rack with cookbooks that didn't move. How could that be???? Our home was spared the floods and mud, we lost all of the trees on the street and all of the fences were blown away, but still had a place to call home. I worked out of town for months away from my family - times were so hard, but everyone came together to help each other - we all understood - As bad as the storm and the aftermath of the storm was to not only personal property, but to human life - it seemed that everyone came together to help each other. For the most part it showed the good side of human nature.
Having BC has again showed me that we do want to help each other........and I have been fortunate to have such a wonderful support system.
-
Thank you for sharing that memory Jen. What a thing to have survived!
Sorry to make a short reply but I'm just home from the long drive back from visiting family and need to lie down
-
Lilah - I just wanted to say something - it's been five years and at times still seems like a dream. I don't need a reply and no need to apologize.
Donna - how is it going?
-
I believe it Jenn... kind of like having BC
Like a bad dream.
-
When I returned to work in January my legs and feet hurt terribly, so I wore flats - heels hurt too much. Then with my back aches I decided to stay in cute flats, and they are comfortable. However, today I took a walk to one of the shoe stores at lunch and picked up some low heels. I haven't worn heels since my diagnosis - hope I don't fall on my face like a kid wearing heels for the first time.
Hope everyone is having a good week.
Oh....forgot to tell y'all - my daughter rushed and got in the sorority she wanted, she is SO EXCITED.
-
Jenn - What great news for your daughter! I thought about you over the weekend when all the news stories about the anniversay of Katrina were running. Your story above is really touching and the strength that comes from adversity is truly amazing. NPR reported on a study that showed when communities have disasters, they emerge stronger and better. I think that is true of us as individuals too!
Lilah - I hope it was the drive that sent you for the nap...not your family. HA!
The story of the aftermath of Katrina makes my laundry room "disaster" seem very very minor by comparison. Haz mat group is gone, dry wallers were here today. It'll be better than new by the end of the week! Next project: new backyard fence. Ah, the joys of home ownership.

Hi everyone I am STILL getting preschool ready for the start of the new school year. We are thrilled at the way it looks with the new floor and paint job. But there are always more jobs to do. Glad to hear all seems well with Patty, Lilah and Jenn. I also posted on the July chemo thread as chemo started the last week of July and at the weekend I get to meet a cyber buddy - Joni1 from that thread. We are off to Medford, Oregon for a wedding and so will be in her neighborhood. Looking forward to that.
-
Patty -- hazmat? Did I miss something somehow? And LOL about the drive or the family -- the DRIVE
Jenn -- wooo hooo for your daughter! That is the best news.
Gilly -- have a great time in Oregon.
-
Lilah - I'm sort of kidding about the haz mat group. But the plumber who came to fix a leak in the laundry room found mold inside the walls, so I had a clean up company come and rip the walls out, swab what was left with whatever and blow it dry for days. Kinda funny, but they closed the room off with plastic walls and walked around with masks on. Oh the drama of it all!
Gilly - Sounds like your little students have a great new school to look forward to. My extremely bored 13-year old goes back next Tuesday. Happy, happy, joy, joy! How fun to meet one of your BCO sisters in person!
Patty
-
Patty - What a mess to deal with.......I hate dealing with repairs. Glad to hear you're about done and can move onto the fence, at least the fence is something you can "show off".
Gill - have a great time meeting your cyber friend, can't wait to hear more.
My "baby" is coming home for Labor Day weekend. She is ready for some home cooked meals, which I'll be cooking and sending back with her. I have to share a funny....she had to use a hand held can opener today and didn't know how because she's never used one. She looked it up on YouTube......I laughed so hard when she told me that. But.....she figured it out.
-
Jenn -- LOL about the hand can opener - hey at least she is resourceful!
So does being accepted into the sorority of her choice mean she moves into/lives in the sorority house? Or does that not happen at her school?
Patty -- well thank goodness they cleaned up the mold!
Donna -- how is the diet going???
-
Lilah - her school doesn't have sorority or fraternity houses. She did say a lot of the girls get apartments together and try to stay in close vincinity of each other. I kind of like the idea of not living in a sorority house - it'll save me some money. She really likes the girls in the sorority and said they've all been so welcoming and friendly. Don't you go back next week?
I wore heels to work these last two days and I have to say, it felt good. Not that heels feel good, but felt like my old self. However, tomorrow we're walking about 8 blocks for lunch so it'll be flats again.
Hope everyone is doing well.
-
I had meetings this week, Jenn, but yeah the semester begins officially next week.
Well that is just so great that she is happy! And that she is visiting you already is sorta sweet.
Have a wonderful holiday weekend everyone.
-
Jenn - You remind me of the old saying....What do women want? Comfortable shoes. I wouldn't be surprised that in addition to a home cooked meal, you daughter will be looking for laundry services. Very funny about the can opener. Thank heaven for YouTube.
Lilah - Happy back to school for you too!
Happy Labor Day everybody!
Patty
-
Patty - she did bring her laundry home, but did it herself.......I was shocked. She said that she needed to learn. Impressive - 2 weeks away and she did laundry for the first time. My oldest daughter came over yesterday and decided to spend the night and hang with us - very enjoyable.
Well....I can't spend too much time on the computer today, the girls are ready to hit the road and get "stuff" done.
Have a great weekend.
-
Today my "baby" leaves to go back to school - we had a great weekend together and she got to visit with everyone she wanted to see. She was telling me about all of the things she's got to do over the next several weeks and she is going to be busy between school and her sorority. But....she is loving college life!
-
Busy busy week for me so I will only be around sporadicaly but wanted to say: we saw The American last night and were disappointed. Lots of Mood and Brood but not a lot of story.
-
Lilah - thanks for the info on the movie - I read a review that said had George Clooney not done the movie it more than likely would have gone straight to DVD, so I took it off of my list of "to see" movies. Good luck getting back into the work groove....
-
Darn I wish I had seen that article before I saw that movie! LOL I can't believe what a dud it was all in all....
-
Hi to all. Where's Donna? We haven't had a report for a while - but she's pretty active on Facebook!
-
She is too busy having fun with her skinny self
(Clearly)
-
