Question: Recently diagnosed with BRCA1, 33 years old, and need to get MRI, I also plan on Bil mastecomy in the near future, how do I get started with my Insurance company? Can I anticipated that they will cover these costs?

    Your insurance company should have policy written that allows for a BRCA+ patient to have mastectomy and reconstruction.  A reputable breast surgeon and team will know exactly how to go about proving medical necessity through your insurance company to assure coverage.  Feel free to PM me and I can go into more detail if you like.

    I see that you are located in Mt P! I am in Greenville. Any chance you had a bilateral mastectomy? If so, do you have an recommendations with PS and Gen Surgerons in the state?

    cedapie- Sorry to hear about your BRCA results.  I'm not sure if you are considering a nipple sparing mastectomy but you may be a good candidate for it.  The majority of breast surgeons are not trained in this procedure so it may take some hunting on your part depending on where you live.  If you are interested I would definitely consult with a BS who is very experienced in this type of mastectomy.  The procedure is a lot less disfiguring, especially if you can find someone who prefers to do the incisions below the fold of the breast.  

    I was never told this type of MX existed by my first surgeon so I like to try to educate as many women as possible that this is an option.  I had a NSM done in March and have been very pleased with the results.  Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

    I was recently dx as BRCA2 and my insurance will cover PBM and recon as it is considered preventative treatment.  I'm talking with another breast surgeon tomorrow and then will decide who I want to use.  Hoping to have it done right after Thanksgiving so I'll be back to work at the beginning of the year.  It's crazy to think about but for me I think it is the rational thing to do.
