10 Weeks PFC-need safe hair dye
Comments

I have read that you should wait 6 months to use traditional hair dye on your hair after chemo. Since I'm now just 10 weeks PFC, the salt and pepper gray hair is not doing it for me. I really need to change the colour to my more normal blond highlights. Does anyone in the Toronto or surrounding area have an ideas of "Safe" hair colour and where to buy it?? Thanks in advance.

At 13 weeks, I went to my hair stylist who dyed my hair (permament colour). I wasn't thrilled with the colour at first, but at least it covered the grey and now it looks fine. If you look under the Chemo forum, there's a thread called Hair, Hair Hair, where many women have posted who dyed their successfully long before 6 months. You may want to ask your onc.
Some large pharmacies carry gentle temp colour hair products - I recall seeing a good selection at the Shoppers near Wilson and Avenue Road - but I'm sure you can find elsewhere too.

Hi Luah...thanks for your response. I read Hair, hair, hair over the past couple of months and tried the suggestion of Fanci-full but it didn't change the gray/dark colour at all. I have purchased a no-Ammonia hair colour (at Walmart) and will probably try that to see what happens but will also look at Shoppers Drug Mart first to see if there's anything else more suitable.

So just to update anyone else reading this....I ended up using Garnier's Herbacolour that is without Ammonia. It seemed to be similar to Herbatint (which is sold at Loblaws and all the Health food stores) bur about 1/2 the price. The Herbacolour (with Bamboo!! whatever that means) is about $8 at Walmart.
I used a dark blond colour and it actually coloured my hair perfectly except for the extremely gray part at the front.

I know the Big Carrot on the Danforth carries organic hair dyes.

Once my hair was worth colouring (i.e., 1 inch long!) I just used regular colouring products from the store (i.e., Garnier, L'Oreal...). And at the hairstylists. I had no problems at all.
One note of caution -- if you care colouring your hair blonde or some light colour, chemo hair for some reason colours brassy. So, look for cool colours or be sure to tell your colourist -- be sure to emphasize this. One time my colourist didn't listen to me and I ended up spending a lot of time with toner on to change my hair from orange to blonde.

Hi, all. I've been meaning to post for a few days but I can't easily type on a keyboard. My finger tips are very sore. I am 6 days out from my last AC. I'm worried this means my nails are going to fall off. I didn't have any nail issues on taxol, but the AC seems to have done the trick. Ugh.
