Traveling between chemo & surgery

Just started weekly Taxol & Herceptin.  2 down, 10 to go.  To be followed by AC every other week for 8 weeks.  After that, wait @ 4-6 weeks before surgery.  Thinking of taking our family of 5 down to Disney during that "window" for a week (January).  Oncologist says ok, but try to make it for the 5th week so my energy levels are back up.  So, God willing, these are our plans for now.  Anyone else ever travel during/between/after chemo and/or surgery?  Input or advice welcome.

    Prayers for all.

I did surgery first and then TCH chemo every 3 weeks for 6 cycles.

I traveled the week before surgery. It was a business trip to Asia. I had surgery the day after I returned home. I did use miles to upgrade from business class to first so I could go into surgery as well rested as possible. It was no problem and my surgeon was fine with it.

I didn't travel between surgery and chemo. Chemo was started just about as soon as the wound was healed. Traveling during this time might not cause any extra risks but I wouldn't want to be away from home when an after surgery infection cropped up.

I took 3 business trips during chemo. That is probably more feasable when on a 3 week chemo cycle. The trips each fell during the 3rd week of a cycle so I was feeling closer to normal.  At the end of chemo, I was feeling quite weak - having trouble with stairs. I had another business trip 4 weeks after my last chemo treatment. At the start of the week I was still having trouble with stairs - I had to ask for help at the airport to carry my roll-aboard down the stairs from the terminal to board a small plane. But I walked and did small flights of stairs all week during the trip and by the end of the week I felt much stronger. This was a case where pushing my self seemed to help with recovery.

During all the trips during chemo and right after, I was extra careful to get enough sleep - no evening meetings - and eat as well as I could. I skipped some evening meetings and sometimes had dinner in my room.

Your oncologist's advice sounds right to me. We all react differently. Also, it is possible to run into a problem during chemo that delays a treatment and therefore chemo ends later than originally scheduled. You might want to avoid scheduling a trip that was costly to reschedule or cancel. Or you might consider getting trip insurance.

You're right, everything is subject to change.  The only out-of-pocket expense will be spending money, because we're using points on our vacation club.  Rescheduling is no big deal.  Thanks for your info!

Hi, I did neoadjuvant TCHx6, waited 6 weeks, and then had surgery.  I went on vacation 3 weeks after my last TCH.  It was a mellow vacation, which was good, b/c I was pretty tired by the afternoons and needed a short nap.  I found I would get tired if standing or walking for too long, so I always had an eye out for a park bench or some place to rest for a second.  All that said, I really really enjoyed the time away and I am so glad I did it.  Just do it at your pace and you'll be fine.
