Wow!  I was shocked to hear the news.  Wouldn't getting pregnant not be ideal since she was dx with BC two years ago?  She did not do chemo so I would think she was estrogen positive.

Thoughts?

She did have bmx. She's BRCA+   It doesn't happen often but it does happen. Congratulations to her. That is wonderful news.

I think she didn't do chemo because she had DCIS. Lots of ER+ women do chemo.

I'm glad for her - terrific news!

Congrats to her - yes, she had dcis - so no chemo. (and YES many women incl. me have chemo with hormone positive cancer.).  She is brac + and I recall an interview where she wanted to get pregnant soon to address the future issue of ovarian cancer increase with brac+.

I wish the "stars" that are diagnosed would take a little time to address the facts.  I have had a few people tell me that if I had a bmx like Christina Applegate then I wouldn't have had to do chemo."  Big sigh....her dcis is why she did not entertain the idea of chemo.  Probably the same with Sheryl Crow.

Regardless - congrats to her - pregnancy and babies are wonderful.

I had a healthy baby in 1995 two years after chemo & radiation.  The doctors were all very excited for me to start a family.  He's 15 and going to High School this year!

She had the baby! A beautiful little girl.  She gave a very heartfelt interview in the current People magazine.  Congrats to her!

These stories make me so hopeful. I have two beautiful, wondrous, truly fabulous daughters, but I wanted a third child so badly. I have wanted three forever, but I made a mistake with marriage #1 and spent several years extricating myself and getting to where I could meet and fall for a wonderful man. as of this past February, it seemed like everything in my life was finally falling into place - wonderful family, finally got a funded offer to a doctoral program, and I was planning on getting to ABD in two years and then trying to conceive a third child. Then, cancer hit me this month, age 37. I obviously can't afford to take a leave of absence from work at this point (HELLO Health Insurance! thank You!), so I am deferring my acceptance to the PhD program for a year in favor of getting through chemo and rads while working full time without losing it entirely trying to be a TA and take courses as well. i think this will ultimately work out OK, but there's always the shot they can't/won't fund me when I go back - on which case, I can't finish the degree I've wanted for so long. To think I would potentially lose out both on the degree and on the third child was gut-wrenching; to think I might still be able to have one, the other or both in the end gives me extraordinary hope and a good shot of adrenaline towards taking care of business and getting back on track!!

I just saw and read the Applegate story in People's Magazine today while waiting in a shop.  It seems she had a double mast so she would not have to take the chemo etc.  I am so happy for her to have given birth to her beautiful baby. However, from what I am reading, having a double mast without taking the protective measures of chemo and/or radiation does not protective you from future cancer.  Even with a lumpectomy one never knows if other cancer cells are roaming in the body and that is what chemo etc. is supposed to help destroy.  We all end up having to take responsibility for our choices.  In my case, I was not even allowed to make a choice and only told about what was done to me "after" the fact.   I guess some surgeons don't feel we women have the intelligence to decide what is best for us so they do what "they" feel is best and we better hope they make the right decisions.

    Hi MediGal-

As far as I am aware, I think I read somewhere that she had DCIS/pre-invasive cancer, thus chemo was not indicated. She is also BRCA+ so, obviously I cannot speak for her, but I am sure that had something to do with her decision for BMX.

Either way, congrats for her on her lovely baby after BC. It made my heart feel a little lighter to read her story.

I have no children but I desperately want one. This story gives me hope that I may be able to carry a child.

(((melmes))) I hear you, I had wanted baby #3 too. From the BC standpoint the docs said I could try, but I had some reconstruction issues that involved my abdomen so now with mesh in there OB is afraid for me to get pregnant. She said I could think about it in another year or so.

Sorry to hear too about your degree as well, hopefully all will work out somehow
