My name is Tina I am 33 years old and have just recently been diagnosed with IDC Stage 2 er/pr - and HER2+.  I was diagnosed 7-19-10.  My boyfriend of 5 years found the lump on my left breast about 2 days prior to being diagnosed.  I went and had my GYN do a breast exam, she sent me for a mamogram and breast ultrasound and was told that same day by the radiologist it was breast cancer, I then had a ultrasound guided biopsy the next day.  I met with an oncologist today, she has me scheduled for a CT Scan and a Bone Scan this week, she wants to start chemo carboplatin, taxotene and hercephin every 3 weeks for 6-8 weeks.  I am just a wreck,  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome Tina. Does she want you to have the chemo before surgery? Can they tell how large the lump is? Sometimes they do chemo first, in order to shrink it before surgery. It is imperative you have the Herceptin and unfortunately you can't have it without the chemo. I had 6 TCH treatments every 3 weeks which is what she has recommended for you. It's not nice but doable and you will feel well again. I finished mine in March and feel almost normal except for tiredness some days. You will find wonderful support on this forum so keep in touch.

    Thank you Sue,

I have been reading this board and I feel better knowing I am not alone in this, sad there are so many woman who have to deal with this but it is nice to be able to communicte and share experiences.  My onco does want to start chemo before surgery, and the lump is 5cm.  What side effects did you have?  My onco told me tonight that my nails could loosen and become weak and brittle.  I am just scared.

Tina I am sorry that you had to join this crappy club :(  I am the same age as you and I went thru TCH for 6 treatments followed by herceptin for a year over a year ago.  It is going to be a long ride but one that I am sure you will make to the other side of.  Just take it one day at a time.

BTW, my nails never had a problem but my toenails did 1 year out.  They are still hangin' on but they are UGLY.  They do not hurt but are just ugly.

    Tina,

Over here in Australia they give us cold gloves to put on during the treatment. Also painting your nails black is said to help. I used to bite my nails but stopped so I could paint them and then made such a mess I gave up. I didn't lose any whole nails, however they did tear off about 2/3 of the way down. They are now healthy and pink and I haven't started biting them again.

As for SE's - about 2 days after a tx I would get bad pains in my legs - this was controlled with Claratin and Digesic tablets for a few days.

I also had bad stomach cramps - this was controlled by taking Somac every day.

Don't get constipated or you'll pay the price. I did get the runs but it wasn't too bad but it would burn - this was about a week after treatment. Food tasted awful too.

Overall you should get 1 week feeling reasonable out of 3. Taste buds should come back by then. I used Biotene mouth wash the whole time and biotene tootpaste with a soft brush. I got one ulcer in my mouth right at the end.

One thing to keep in mind is that when your lump shrinks you'll know the chemo is working. Lots of ladies on here have reported excellent shrinkage and with some it even disappeared!!!!

    Tina,

So sorry that you had to join the club that nobody wants to join.  But, the stage where you are right now is the hardest stage.  Once you know everything, it gets better.  Honestly, it really does.

I just finished my 6 rounds of TCH 05/28.  Honestly, it really was very doable.  It was much easier for me than I thought it would be.

    Hang in there,

    V

Hi Tina, Just thought I would pop in and tell you that this is the worst part and that it does get better.  I was dxd 2 years ago six weeks after having my third child and did TCH and am fine today.  TCH is very doable, I was able to keep up with 3 kids, it wasn't a breeze but it was a lot better than I thought it will be.  You are young and otherwise healthy so I know you will do great.  Get lots of rest, drink a ton of water and take the meds they give you and remember you will get through this.  Good luck, if you have any questions, you can pm me anytime.  Lauren

Hi Tina -- I had TCH last summer -- from May to August every three weeks and then Herceptin til May this year. The side effects really vary a lot from person to person, so it's hard to know what you will experience. I had one bout of neutropenia, when my blood counts got so low I gave my self an infection and ended up in the hospital for a few days. After that I got a Neulasta injection after each chemo. I didn't really get nauseous, just felt pretty much "dyspeptic" all the time. Diet Coke helped a lot! I never had any of the bone and joint aches some people experience, but the last couple of cycles really wiped me out. Very fatigued. Breathless at the top of the stairs, etc. Finger and toe nails were pretty wrecked, but they do grow back eventually. All this can be rough while it's going on, but it's really a pretty short time.

Just look after yourself -- clear your calendar as much as you can, accept any help that is offered, and ask for what you need. Try to stay as active as you can -- walk every day, even if it's only out to the curb and back. Drink lots of water to help your body flush out the chemicals. Be very vigilant about limiting your exposure to any illnesses, germs, and microbes. Stock up on hand sanitizer, wash all fruit and vegetables thoroughly even if you peel them and peel them when you can, stay away from salad bars, and leave the weeding to someone else. Remember to breathe and surround yourself with positive people and loveliness. Good luck and God bless. Jenbal

Just wanted to say welcome to a club no one wants to join! I was 37 at diagnosis with a 6 week old baby. I am now 38 and baby is 9 1/2 months. Also did TCH x6 every 3 weeks December 21-April 7th. Then had surgery and just finished radiation last Monday. Will continue Herceptin until December ..which of course is all the normal protocol.

There is a taxotere, cabo, herceptin board. Please jump on over there too. Lots of great gals. I actually read every single page of the TCH board before I started chemo. Took me about a week but got it done!

    Hugs

HI, I am "fighting irish mom" and just dx poorly differentiaited infiltrating lobular cancer, and it is in noes too (HUGE lump under armpit) it is er1, pr 1 and her2+. My immediate reaction was just take them both off, but onc wants me to enroll in clinical trial of no surgery. I HAVE TO DECIDE by tomorrow - do I go ahead with mastecomy (or ies, up to me) on Thurs, or start chemo tues a.m. (Of course this is all contingent upoon bone scan results, which I am praying are fine.) I am unsure if chemo tues includes herceptin. But, bottom line is I am incredibly intelligent person but simply unable to make this decision on my own. I am now leaning towards "the Golden Mean" - remove only one breast, go with chemo etc.

Please let me know your thoughts! Thank you

Dear Tina, hugs to you.  It such a scary time, being diagnosed, coming to terms with being a person with cancer.  I couldn't say "cancer" or accept another's kindness without crying in the beginning.  I am past that now.  You really find your strength when you live this disease.  You also find out how wonderful other people can be.  Accept offers of help.  Don't be too hard on yourself.  Come here often.  Check the Taxotere, Carboplatin and Herceptin thread in Chemotherapy.  There are many in that forum who have lived this regimen.  They have lots of advice and experience.

I am in my sixth round, and surgery is next, then radiation.  The chemo actually went by pretty quickly.  I can't believe I've had my last infusion.  I am so looking forward to having normal taste buds again.  Everyone's side effects are different.  Advice from mine:  take benedryl at the first sign of a rash;  take probiotics to try to keep your tummy straight;  be gentle on your skin, use gloves to do the dishes;  nap when you feel like it;  go to the look good feel better class;  have fun with scarves and hats; and let people take care of you sometimes.

My tumor was 5+ cm, and the oncologist hasn't been able to feel is since the end of round 3.   Pathologic complete response is definitely possible with this protocol!

     I'm fighting with you.  :-)

    Hello Tina & Ladies -

I feel as though I was just diagnosed but was actually 11/23/09.  The time just blends from 1 day to the next and your normal world stops, to replaced by many different  things.  You first have to understand - that takes a little research and study.  Then comes direction you will take - more research and study.  I did 4 rounds of TCH but was supposed to do 6.  I had colon complications, became severly enemic, had cellulitis from the first surgery to insert the port and remove sintenal node along with 8 others, and ended up in the hospital 3 times after 3 of the treatments.  Don't want to alarm anyone - that was just me & had colon problems starting into the Chemo then the Chemo took hold and wrecked havoc.   I called a halt after 4 - think I might have ended up on a colostomy bag had I received any more.  I listened to my body and 4 would have to do.  I am still taking Herceptin every 3 wks till year end.  My surgery followed on 4/14/10, BMX with single stage implants.  But it is all doable, even with all the extra problems I had, it is doable and even though time seems to crawl, it is over before you know it.  Then you can enjoy letting the new you come back to life.

December 24, 2008 I was diagnosed Triple Positive (er/pr HER2) (tumor was 4.8 cm) I took the carboplatin, taxotere and herceptin, followed by 33 rounds of radiation - I was able to work every day - just place things in the hands of God, and keep positive people around you - Good luck

Tina, you'll find a wealth of information on this site. I'm so glad my husband came across it. I was diagnosed with triple positive in October 2009. I had 4 cycles of chemo (AC), then a lumpectomy (when they went in the cancer was gone - just dead cells left), 12 more weeks of chemo (Taxol and Herceptin), and now Herceptin only until February 2011. I also had 6 weeks of radiation. I must say that God is Good! I sailed through chemo and the surgery without any problems. Radiation was a little challenging (probably because you have to go every day) but it went by quickly. I agree with jcarolsapp...it is important to keep positive people around you and put yourself in God's hand. I delved into the Word of God and meditated on healing scriptures. When I saw how much time Jesus spent healing people in the bible, I knew he could heal me! If you need some scriptures, let me know...I have at least three pages. :) God Bless!
